We’ve decided against buying something in Florida. Going to rent if we go.Speaking from experience, if boredom is something you fear, Marco may not be the best place for you.
It's lovely, but there's a reason on the island they call 9 p.m. "Marco Midnight"
I have seriously thought about taking my record player a shit ton of albums, 50 boxes of books, my fishing poles and that's it and moving to a cabin by a lake when I retire. I honestly can't think of a better retirement. I'd probably keep a burner phone for emergencies and that's it.
A man can dream . . .
I love that feature. I hate driving my wife's car on road trips because she doesn't have it. What don't you like?
Electronic/digital calendars. I want PAPER!My nominee is the Apple TV remote. In fact, the specific complaint I have is a problem with quite a few new device remotes/interfaces.
It is the goddam super-sensitivity.
Back in the day, to change a channel or turn off power or switch inputs, you had to PUSH DOWN a button with intent.
Now, my friggin' cat jumps on the couch a few inches from where the Apple remote is and BAM instead of watching the exciting end of a basketball game, it has switched to the PS5 input or put on the stupid HGTV channel my wife was watching previously. You breathe on the damn thing and it is activated. I hate this. Same with the insanely sensitive screens these days - just this morning when I reached into my pocket to get my phone out at the grocery store, I opened the damn garage door back at my house because I forgot to shut the myQ app.
And to cut the smartasses off at the pass, I know:
Same. I have to disable the auto parking feature before backing up our boat. 9/10 I’ll remember. But usually 1-2 times per summer I’ll forget and the brakes will lock up.Speaking of backing up in a new vehicle...
I am still old school enough that when I trailer a boat to a boat ramp I unplug my lights before backing into the water so as to avoid zapping the bulb(s). (Yes, I know that todays LED's are supposed to be immune from this problem, but old habits die hard. )
My new truck cannot digest what I am doing and will beep and warn me about a potential read end collision, etc, etc, AND apply the brakes for me and stop me cold. GRRRRRR!
If there is a way to defeat this one, I don't know it yet.

TJ here and have had no “major” issues I haven’t been able to fix within an afternoon…but also not the daily driver (anymore).A lot of Jeeps require working on it all day long. My YJ is getting to that point.
If you enjoy the format, good for you!I have a ton of albums and books in a 2.5 by 5 inch machine I have on myself at all times.
If you enjoy the format, good for you!
I won’t read books on my phone. I have a Kindle Scribe that’s pretty sweet and I read most books on it now, but also enjoy a real book quite a bit.
I also prefer the audio experience of my nice turntable set up, though I’m not one of those snobs that says it’s “better” and I use Apple Music all the time.
I just like the idea of being unplugged and out of network most of the time once I’m out of the working world.
I buy a cheesy paper animal calendar every year.Electronic/digital calendars. I want PAPER!
When you get back to Marco Island, try this fairly new restaurant:My retirement leisure/amusement goals, other than simply being with friends/family:
- Interesting travel
- Going to shows/musicals
- Golfing at a respectable level
- Buying a place on or near the beach somewhere in or between Marco Island and Tampa.
- If 4 isn't possible, owning a boat here in the midwest and keeping it at the ready at the local marina.
- Daily or frequent exercise, preferably involving walking the beach
- Hanging out by the pool
- Growing a kickass garden and making fresh delicious food
Programs on Max, Disney, Prime, Netflix, Apple, are not on direct tv.Not if you have Direct TV... sounds like a problem @Tenacious E claimed didn't exist. I knew better of course...
This.... why can't I just get my car do to 80 and I'll initiate the pass when I want to without losing speed? Was there like some rash of crashes where people got rear ended in the 1980s from cruise that I don't remember as a kid? Instead I have to turn off my targeting computer and use the force to figure out when my car is going to drop 7 mph before I have to stomp on it to get back up to speed.Adaptive Cruise Control can be annoying at times.
This is an awesome list other then #4. You couldn't pay me to live in FL, other then that this is a great list. Retirement might be in LA or OK. Maybe the outer banks. My retirement leisure/amusement goals, other than simply being with friends/family:

Buy an elevated home and you’re Gucci maneYeah, that is a loss I’d have to be willing to eat. I would never buy a second home in a natural disaster prone area if I couldn’t afford to lose it outright. I’m not in that position but I hope to be some day.
Did you not read the word "prone"?Where is a place where natural disasters can't happen?
Not sure, but I think he means those apps are available on the Direct TV streaming platform so you don't have to exit to sign into those services.Programs on Max, Disney, Prime, Netflix, Apple, are not on direct tv.
Realistically this is what we will do. Ownership is aspirational. We’ve decided against buying something in Florida. Going to rent if we go.
You can watch Netflix, prime, and Apple within directv? I haven’t had it for many years and was not aware that was a thing.*Not sure, but I think he means those apps are available on the Direct TV streaming platform so you don't have to exit to sign into those services.
They are not.Not sure, but I think he means those apps are available on the Direct TV streaming platform so you don't have to exit to sign into those services.
my 19' Chevy has a button on the dash to turn it off.She has a Chevy Equinox. The only way I know to bypass it is by opening the hood before starting the car. For some reason that disables it.
Every vehicle I've owned has a button to turn it off, Jeep, BWM, Mercedes, GMC Canyon. I can't believe there is a vehicle out there that doesn't have it.my 19' Chevy has a button on the dash to turn it off.
My 2019 Chevy does not. Or at least least, not that I’m aware of.my 19' Chevy has a button on the dash to turn it off.
We have a bunch of people who are largely incapable of having a conversation. All they do is yell and scream what they want, how they feel, etc etc. The concept of of a dialogue or two-way exchange is something many of them do not grasp. Listening skills are becoming increasingly rare.Smart phones and the internet have all but ruined human interaction and basic social norms.
Something as simple as starting a conversation waiting in line or conversing with a passenger in your car is now an interruption.
Apparently a response to a snap chat or tick toc post is more important than anything going on around you in the moment
stampedes? It's not just hurricanes, there are earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, blizzards, stampedes.... Shit can hit the fan anywhere.
I’ve seen YouTube videos of Chevys that have a disable switch next to the hazard lights switch. Mine does not.my 19' Chevy has a button on the dash to turn it off.
jesus bro go to a barnes and noble or something.Electronic/digital calendars. I want PAPER!
This, specifically as it relates to push-button start. If something happened to the fob on my Nissan I wouldn't be able to use the physical key to turn the damn thing on, because you pop off the plastic cover over where the ignition should be and there's just...nothing. It's just empty.Key fobs. I want a real key. Too easy to leave in a pocket coat or go through the wash. 300 to fix. My VW had a switch blade like key. That was the best…
That's all I was saying. You don't have to switch inputs in order to choose a different app, but you still have to pay for each service. I agree with @beanerhawk that it was better when there weren't so many different services you have pay for to get all the content available. There are way too many choices these days. You can watch Netflix, prime, and Apple within directv? I haven’t had it for many years and was not aware that was a thing.*
*edited to note you can, but you go to a Home Screen to enter the app, just like you would do on a Roku or your tv, to access an app.
I was using the term input in a generic sense but yes, you don’t need to have a different physical input, if you use a Roku and YTTV, and apparently also directv streaming. I appreciate all of the content but there is going to be a point where it collapses - at least for original content creation - because the baby is bing split too many ways. That's all I was saying. You don't have to switch inputs in order to choose a different app, but you still have to pay for each service. I agree with @beanerhawk that it was better when there weren't so many different services you have pay for to get all the content available. There are way too many choices these days.
