His problem is that he shouldn't be splitting between a traffic lane and a parking lane. Honestly, I'm not sure that's allowed in places where splitting is legal.

I don't think it was the parking lane as there are cars parked to the right of the guy who open his door...

OMG...THIS is why you should never help anyone! Poor guy. If I was an insurance adjuster and I was reading that accident report I would probably question it, after I laughed at it.
