After a rough quarters results in only 2 finalists (and with both DeSanto and Warner underdogs tonight from a seeding perspective), Iowa's streak of having at least one finalist is in jeopardy. If both lose, this would be the first time since the 1988-1989 season where Iowa is without a finalist.

C'mon Warner and DeSanto - let's keep the streak alive!

This was a hugely disappointing round. Had a chance to stay in the hunt. Now we’ll be lucky to even get top4 as a team. Something hasn’t felt right the whole season. I know we’re hurting in more ways than one, but it’s very frustrating, disappointing, and upsetting. Regroup and get two finalists with 8 All-Americans. Let’s go and show what Hawk wrestling is all about. That round wasn’t Iowa wrestling. Come on! Get it together TnT…

I’m as disappointed as anyone but if I’m not mistaken every single one of our wrestlers has the potential to wrestle to seed or above(for those who were seeded to AA). It’s been a rough year. We are wrestling without Lee, 2 Labrum’s, and at least one ACL. Our guys battled the best they could with what they have. Very gritty bunch and I’m proud of their fight.

100% on all of this. I can't remember a more snakebitten team.

Coaching should be blamed for this poor performance, every other team was ready to go. Injuries are clearly the scapegoat here, but I doubt we see different results without them. We are putting 25-26 year olds out there, clearly past their prime, because we can't recruit... injuries were bound to happen.

1989 had no finalists

Our guys at UIHC surgery center next week:

When is the last time Iowa had a 33% win percentage in a session? We are 4-8 in this session. I’ve followed nationals with interest every year since ‘99. I can only remember Friday in Kansas City feeling this bad (around 2005 or 2006). Some hardcore Hawk fan with encyclopedic knowledge please reply.

So Penn St would be in the lead right now if RBY wasn’t wrestling because he had ACL surgery in January. Nick Lee had a torn ACL. Starocci had a torn labrum and could only wrestle with one arm and Kerk dinged his knee and limited his mobility?
But they're not are they? So what is your point... don't start with useless hypotheticals. I can counter-argue the hell out of that.... "PSU coaches must be doing something right when it comes to training, conditioning, coaching technique, recovery, etc."

Exactly. And then give us Spencer, JE, AM, MK, and Tony C all at 100%. It would be a 100% turnaround. But this problem is continuous.

The problem is our health. Every year in the national tournament, we have guys banged up with shoulders, knees, labrum, ACL's, etc. Every year. Conversely, I can't remember the last penn st. guy to show up with their entire upper body or a leg all wrapped up. Or any other program for that matter. Iowa does it every year.

Ah - you're right. Went too quick through it. I'll fix my original post.

1989 was especially brutal. 4 AA's, Iowa finished 6th.

118 Steve Martin (Unseeded/finished 7th)
126 Tom Brands (2 seed/4th)
134 Joe Melchiore (2 seed/3rd)
150 Doug Streicher (US/DNP)
158 Mark Reiland (US/4th)
167 John Heffernan (3 seed/R of 12)
190 Brooks Simpson (11 seed/R of 12)
HWT Andy Haman (9 seed/R of 12)

So maybe, just maybe, coaching is a big factor in health management??? Please help explain this concept to @jmadden1998, it's not clicking for him/her/it.

Sounds like my team should find some new fans and coaches that recognize these issues.
Here you go. Give him a call and make it happen

Yeah I'm sure Tom and Terry will have some master coaching strategy drawn up to make our guys wrestle better.......

Here come the football fans with their 2 cents

I wouldnt put the blame anywhere specifically but our coaches do need to reevaluate strength and conditioning, nutrition, training methods etc during the off season. Some of the injuries are bad luck but clearly we need to change some things and get with the times. Our coaches will adjust.

I don’t think they are likely to change anything.

I'm sorry, but GFY. Scapegoating TnT is worse than scapegoating injuries.

What happens? Is it basketball fans? Football fans? Can a fan support more than one sport? If a fan doesn’t post constantly on this site, is he/she somehow less of a fan? Or can anyone post, but never question the collective? Just want to know the cesspool rules…
It come off a disingenuous when ransoms from the basketball and football forums arrive every March with their solutions to fixing the program, which are always ridiculous, uniformed and out of touch. I.e. The defending champs have a bad showing and obviously the coaching staff must go cause they can’t recruit etc.

Well you must've forgotten two years ago when the whole team (consisting of maily the same guys) was healthy and firing on all cylinders.

As far as PSU goes you have nolf and suriano immediately come to mind.

I certainly hope most of you are either still drunk from St. Patty's Day or aren't really Hawk fans.

‘Always’ ridiculous? Absolutism at its finest. To think that there aren’t issues and to blame it on flukes and bad luck isn’t realistic. TnT will evaluate and make tweaks.

I’ve been following this site for over ten years. Each year that Iowa hasn’t won, I recall folks who are obviously fringe wrestling fans at best arriving to provide their expert analysis. As a vested fan, it’s pretty annoying
