Hoiberg back to ISU?

He’s actually been stealing money for awhile. 115-155 in the NBA and now 11-33 at Nebraska and I see no short term way he’s even close to sneaking out of the bottom of the Big Ten. I’m not convinced the guy can coach at all. Hope he does go back to Iowa State. Good luck.
You forget he had them as one of the top offensive teams in the country year after year once they got there as well. On top of that he clearly was an extremely good salesmen, which are the two major facets of being a great coach, selling them on your program and knowing how to use them once you get them there. He turned them from trash (4 straight losing years) to a top 20 program overnight and kept them there. To not be sold on what he did there is laughable.

True, but the question is - is what he did at ISU, when the transfer window was new and he was one of the first to dive into it fully, repeatable?

He did much better than I thought he would at ISU, but Nebraska is a much tougher job than ISU. ISU historically has a fairly solid rep in basketball.

He had the reputation that certain behaviors were allowed at ISU that got you kicked out of other schools. No one got in trouble at ISU because Hoyburger had the cops in his pocket. That was very appealing to some of the transfers who could really play. They didn't come to ames for the water.

I know, sorry about an ISU thread. It seems like destiny that Fred Hoiberg is going to return to ISU though. Thoughts?

I don't think it happens but would love for it to, just so I can make fun of my friends who are Nebraska fans.

Has the OP got some info? Or is this just entirely speculation?
Speculation. Entirely.

Freddy is only in year 2. And IA State is a pit worse than NE. IA State does not have the money that NE has so, unless Fred wants to take a pay cut and move to Ames, I doubt he will be leaving NE this year. Frankly, I really don't care, either, because I think his golden days have passed him.

TJ O is the target but would he want to leave the appeal that is LV for Ames? DeVries is my worry especially with this kid who looks really good. Hoping Wayne Morgan wants to come out of Dish Network Sales retirement. Or hell, make a call to Scary Larry. :)

Fred didn't need the police in their pocket. The general consensus was they were already inclined to watch out for one of their own around Ames
That is direct from a DM area cop that had cited several ISU athletes at different times and had had their write ups magically disappear. And as he said you can never be sure where the orders came from so its better to leave it alone and not make waves.

I'd be a bit worried about hiring the UNLV coach when writers and fans are actually hoping he gets the Clone job.

This subject -- affordability -- always seems to arise when discussing possible coaching changes. And yet, in the final analysis unless you are a lower division school, money is never an obstacle if the school really wants the coach they are targeting. We've seen it over and over again. One way or another, they got the money.

I know he was an assistant at ISU 2x but for some reason their fan base thinks he's the savior for the feel like he brought in good players for Hoiberg but. But he has gone 17-15 and 11-14 at UNLV. He had 2 really good years at SDSU. But one thing to note about his success. He inherited Mike Daum as a redshirt sophomore. He was only the 10th player to eclipse 3,000pts in NCAA history so to have a guy like that makes your job a whole heck of a lot easier. He was smart and moved onto a bigger better job after his star graduated.

Normally I might agree but right now, after a year of the economy in a downturn for many businesses, and uncertainty regarding ADs, I think it DOES matter. Iowa State lost their butts last year. They are hurting big time. Wrong time for a big payout and hire.

That five star is coming to play with his brother, who came to Nebraska last year, via...................................transfer. I'm guessing by the end of a mediocre season next year, they are both gone to the NBA.

The brother was a 4 star top 100 recruit as well so the combo had plenty of suitors. Only a complete imbecile would try to claim a guy who just brought in the B1G’s 3rd highest rated class to freaking Nebraska basketball can‘t recruit, he’s now signed 2 of Nebraska’s 3 highest ranked recruits in their entire history: https://247sports.com/college/nebraska/Sport/Basketball/AllTimeRecruits/

It’s on the short list for worst P5 program and is a way worse job than Iowa. Fran’s classes from 2021-2018 ranked 12, 11, 11, 12 in the conference.

He’s upgraded their roster significantly, if he lands a couple big time transfers this offseason they could easily have a better team than Iowa next year and finish in the top half of the B1G. With only Frederick and Conner returning from the starters there are huge questions, Id rather have the McGowan bros. He went 99-40 in Ames after his first rebuilding year, people who act like he wasn‘t one of the best coaches in the country are completely clueless.

LOL. Yes, but we have now all seen the older brother play, and meh. 10 ppg scorer on a terrible team! The rest of the team will be hot garbage, ala, the Cyclones last year with one great player.
Keegan, Pat, Nunge and Joe are better than anyone on Nebraska's current roster, who just went 3-16 in big ten play. What an absolutely terrible half court heave of a post. Also, nobody said Joe's gone yet either.

Wieskamp is as good as gone, and when you have to bring up a McCaffrey and a guy who may never be healthy again as top returning players you prove my point for me but just aren’t bright enough to know it.

Just a point of clarification....2021: Iowa has one recruit, Sandfort. 2020: I think the class with the Murrays', Ulis, Perkins, and maybe even JO was highly underrated. 2019: Got PMac and JoeT. Jury is still out on this class, but both players see court time. 2018: Iowa signed Wieskamp and Fredrick. If that was the 12th rated class in the B1G, give me more of that.

Not sure they are at a resource disadvantage. Creighton plays in a larger and much newer arena than Iowa plays in.
Whoesing-20181208202814.jpg
The layout of the seats in that arena sucks. If you had seats in the corner you'd have a sore neck always having to turn it to see the court.

Now we can start betting if this guy gets fired in 3/4/5 years and how much more ISU pays in a buyout.

Pollard is batting about .333 in successful coaching hires. That's great in MLB, not so much when you're spending athletic dept revenue. Pollard seems like he's got cred with the fans. I guess there's something to be said about leading a second tier university with low expectations.

Yet McC consistently finishes in the top half of the conference. What is he, a recruiting genius or a coaching wizard?

He does? He went 25-33 the 3 seasons prior to this one, and is 103-101 in conference overall so he’s clearly a coaching and recruiting genius/wizard and the extension and it’s timing were another Barta stroke of genius...

Have you ever heard of the concept of recency bias?

Recency as in the time frame you quoted (2021-2018)?

You are talking about recruiting rankings when Iowa has the NCAA Player of the year.
Brilliant!

Yeah responding to posts about Hoibergs recruiting with facts about recruiting was a complete red herring on my part. Apparently both you and Kilroy think counting on players developing into Garzas caliber as 3 stars is a good strategy. Congrats...

I wouldn't say ISU fans (one myself) are thinking of him as a savior at all. I would assess it as luke-warm at best, a few are excited most are not terribly excited. I don't really know seems like he has a reputation as a good recruiter, but issues with X's and O's, seems oddly reminiscent of the guy they just fired. Who knows I guess, and I don't really know much about Jamie, don't really care, seems to be a bit of a tool at times but has done a good job of raising money. But regardless of how this turns out I think the optics were really bad. Well known fact Jamie and Otz are very good friends and Jamie wanted to hire him instead of Prohm. So again I have no great knowledge and maybe he will work out but not thrilled and it was kinda shitty in my view, Jamie came out yesterday with a webcast saying how we need to be patient and times are hard blah blah blah (yeah we know) and he will conduct a thorough and exhaustive search for the best coach they can get. Later in the day, although not official, it is leaked out that Otz is a done deal, I mean the same f'n day. I lost some respect for Jamie over that, i doubt he cares LOL. Anyway i guess questionable hiring/playing friends and family happens other places too ;-) but seemed like this was a done deal for a bit and Jamie just looked stupid talking about the thorough hiring process, should of just said yeah i make the decisions I hired my BFF, suck it!

Nebraska will be at the bottom of the B10 again next year. Hoiberg achieved very little at ISU besides some B12 tournament titles. One sweet 16 appearance, no conference championships. Has been a disaster every where before and after ISU.

Johnny got a statue with .521 and 1 Sweet Sixteen. They'll probably name the arena after Fred.

Let's talk about Sam Mack while we are on the subject of Iowa State recruits. Even Pierre Pierce didn't shoot it out with the coppers. Very best Iowa State story that doesn't involve livestock. You get to ridicule the Clones football and basketball AND the Ames police all in one.

Where was Hoiberg a disaster before ISU? He had them in the NCAA 4 years in a row with top top 10 finishes nationally in the AP Final. I get no final fours and natties, but your commentary seems to understate the success he had in that time frame.

Actually if I remember correctly from way back then, Mack actually had a knife and the other guy had a gun. If so he wasn't shooting it out with the cops. I remember one cop quoted as saying something like "He is lucky. We are trained to shoot to kill." I was thinking, this is a 6'9" and you hit him in the arse? Maybe you need a bit more target practice!

When Sam and his buddy chose to rob a Hardee's with a gun and a knife, and the buddy with the gun starts shooting Sam was involved in a shoot out.

And the Ames PD....you fire 68 rounds into the Hardee's, as you note at a 6'9" target, and you just clip one of the robbers? I think a little more range time is definitely order.

It just a wonderful tale of the Cyclone varsity athlete and the marksmen protecting their city.

The T’Wolves front office. They never finished in the top ten four years in a row, maybe in the cyclonefanatic top ten.
