Last nite Trev Alberta , Neb AD, announced that Fred will return next year as the Huskers hoops coach.
Fred agreed to reduce his buyout from 18.5 million to 11 million and take a reduction in salary from 5 million to 3.5 million.
Seems to be a trend these days starting with Harbaugh at MICH then Frost and Hoiberg at Neb to overpay bringing saviors into programs only to have them fail and take paycuts.
Hope Huskers are not inspired by this news tonite.
Go Hawks!!

Inspired? I would think they'd be disappointed and disgusted. It would be like telling Iowa players Todd Lickliter would be back again next year. LOL

BTW: That's quite a gig. Win a game, keep your job at $3.5 mil per, and still be owed $11 mil if/when you finally ARE fired. Sign me up. And if you don't think I could coach Nebraska to a 1-19 BIG record, you are sadly mistaken. Heck, I'd be willing to bet I could DOUBLE that number of wins . . . but not, of course, at the expense of Iowa. And I'd do it for HALF of Hoiberg's contract. Twice the wins at half the money. I need to give Trev a call ASAP.

What are the odds in Trev's statement he just replaced Scott Frost and Football with Fred Hoiberg and Baskeball from a few months ago. Because it sounds an pretty familiar to the same thing he said then when they decided to bring Frosty back.
That's what I was thinking! I don't care for Trev, but he's helping Iowa by bringing back these coaches!

It's pretty sad that the only reason they are bringing both coaches back is because Nebraska screwed the pooch with 2 horrible contracts with massive buyouts if they were fired now. On top of this they've already paid tens of millions to former football and b-ball coaches over the last 8 years to the likes of Pelini, Riley and Miles.

Toss Riley and the remaining two look like world beaters....

I thought they could afford to do whatever they wanted with all they money they make, especially from 1,000+ straight sellouts of their football games. ;)

It's apparent Nebraska doesn't have the $$$ to buy out either Frost or Hoiberg.

So you let them go one more season and hope they improve or you get more $$$ from the B1G contract.

God, Husker athletics suck.

Trev Alberts is the gift that keeps on giving. He retains Frosty the dumbass and now Hoiberg...Perfect.

To me this is the biggest nightmare trap for Alberts. Say, for instance, Frost goes 6-6 or 7-5 and receives a lower level bowl invite. That's a huge improvement from his previous seasons ....... BUT it's still not a great record. It seems to me you almost have to retain him another year even though fans expect better. Same type of situation for Hoiberg.

If the strategy was to restructure the buy-out and burn another year off the contract before terminating for a better coach, what do you do if the coach outperforms to a mid-level finish? If Hoiberg was good enough coach to bring back after going 1-19 and a 3rd straight last place finish, can you justify canning him if he improves to a 9-11 8th place finish?

I don't get why Hoiberg would agree to this. MAKE THEM PAY!
I was just going to post the same thing. It makes it easier to fire him and he doesn't make as much money. If that were brought to me and I humored the AD, I'd say you can bring one of those numbers down, but the other needs to go up.

Have to think Hoiberg's coaching career in a major conference is over. Basketball is easier to fix with the fact that adding two good kids can quickly turn around a team.

He was a bit of a revolutionary at ISU with taking in troubled players and giving them a chance. Of course, by reports, having the cops call you first when a kid is in trouble allows you to pay off LEO before it hits the media.

Damn.

FWIW, the salary was reduced from $3.5 million to $3.25 million with incentives (like win three Big Ten games!).

Also, Trev was a student-athlete at UNL when we went to four straight NCAA Tournaments, including earning a No. 3 seed in 1991. We also won the 1994 Big Eight Tournament, right after Trev's final season as a football player in 1993. He knows we aren't a good program, but that we're capable of being competitive with the right coach.

Have fun tonight. I won't be watching. Haven't seen a game since we fell behind by 30 to Creighton. I mean, it was pretty clear after losing to Western Illinois, but the first five minutes of the Creighton game sealed my lack of interest.

Fred isn't a position of strength to negotiate from right now...
Neither was the AD. The worst coach in Nebraska BB history is one of the highest paid coaches in America and under contract through 2026 with a truly gigantic buy-out clause.

I give Alberts credit for persuading Hoiberg to voluntarily reducing his salary and buyout. Fred could have refused to re-negotiate and walked away with an $18M check putting a giant hole in Nebraska's budget.

As an Iowa fan, my observation is they should keep Fred around as long as possible. He’s a nice guy, probably supports the local Lincoln economy more than most. I say they got themselves a good one, keep him around, we support you Fred!

This seems like a bad deal for both sides. Fred must have been presented with a scenario where he takes a reduced payout or he gets fired. I can't imagine why else he would even consider this unless the AD agreed to take the difference in $$$ and buy better players.

He's sacrificing for the love of the program?

Why would he have to negotiate at all? He's got a contract.
Because he doesn’t want to get fired.
I actually think he has a shot at success still. Look at ISU. A lot can change in college basketball in one year.

The ISU change came with a different coach. Can anyone claim that the Nebraska team showed any sign of being coached competently this year?

I don’t think Fred can win playing the junk defense he played tonight. Guarding 3 players with 5 and leaving two mostly wide open. Don’t know when I have ever seen so many wide open three point shots available in a single game. Great job Fran spreading the court, moving the ball and making the open shots we were given. Loved seeing Connor and Tony step up big time.

Hoiberg is 6-49 in conference play?
ouch. 21-66 overall since taking the Nebby job. With stats like that you have to think he’s lucky as hell to still have a job.

No kidding. He is no Todd Lickliter that's for sure.

The POTUS makes $204,000/year. Fred will make over 25 times that much this year while being possibly the least successful basketball coach in the history of Nebraska men's basketball. Now you know why he's not in politics.

😉

Worst part is hoiberg is playing a lot of upperclassman and transfers. One thing to take a few lumps in year 1-2 playing some young guys you bring into the program and blend them in with a few vets like what happened with Fran where it pays off years 3-4. Another when not playing many young guys in year 3 like the mess in Lincoln. Worst part the younger mcgowen could be a one and done. Maybe he comes back next year for 1 more but lot of mocks have him late 1st rd.
