Scott Frost will return for fifth season as Husker football coach with restructured contract

I may be in the minority, but I think NE is close to turning the corner. It doesn't take a sleuth to understand that they've been right in it with the best teams in the East -- played tOSU to basically a tie if their kicker had converted those 2 FG's, should have won at MSU, and was right there with Michigan. I'd prefer to see Frost get the boot so they have to start over with the HC position getting less and less desirable, but I'm concerned that he has it going in the right direction.

EDIT: Just read Forde's article in which he tries to debunk the "close losses to good teams" narrative. I don't think he did much to debunk the theory. They were pretty darn competitive with all of those teams despite many "experts" predicting otherwise. Forde notes the losses to Illinois, Purdue, and Minnesota. Well, Illinois now has wins at PSU and Minnesota and is showing a pulse. Purdue blew out Iowa and beat an excellent MSU team. Minnesota won at Purdue. Those three teams aren't world-beaters, but they've proven capable of beating good teams.

Frost doesn't seem to have lost his team, and considering all of the extraordinarily frustrating losses this year that could so easily have been wins, that's a positive. I'd love for him to continue to struggle and I'm not predicting that he won't, but I think we're kidding ourselves if we try to pretend that there's no evidence that his program is making progress.
I think they were as well, which makes this move so stupid. Will the team really perform better after firing 4 coaches at this point in the season? So who are the new position coaches now, because they sure can't replace them now? This will really put the scrutiny squarely on Frost shoulders. Good luck Scotty.....

I read somewhere that 3 of those coaches go back to 2016 and were with him at UCF which means they were more than coaches but probably friends. It's hard to believe these coaches from a 2017 undefeated UCF team are no longer considered valuable.

Nebraska HC Coach Scott Frost announced Monday that the Huskers have parted ways with 4 assistant coaches effective immediately.

Offensive Coordinator/wide receivers coach Matt Lubick Offensive line coach/run game Coordinator Greg Austin, RB Coach Ryan Held and QB Coach Mario Verduzco are no longer with the program.

Nice to see that Flop is able to see who has done a terrible job and has fired their asses!!!

On the other hand, who in the hell would want to work for that ass hat, especially when the odds of Flop getting fired next year are extremely high?

Like some of you, I think Nebraska was close to turning the corner. The defense has improved a ton. I don't understand this firing of all offensive personnel. Yes, they were inconsistent and undisciplined but generally could move the ball. You are also telling me it is EVERY position coaches fault but not the HC?

This is a total CYA situation by Frost to buy another year. I think the Nebraska admin is showing incredible patience with him that was absolutely not afforded to anyone ahead of him. His name alone is saving his job.

Some of you guys sound like you actually would prefer to lose 7 games than win 7 games…
Let's take a look under the hood should we?
Losing to Purdue at home and looking completely helpless and overwhelmed is inexcusable .
Losing to Wisconsin with less than 20 yards of offense in the first half would get most OC's fired.
Playing one of the worst teams in the B1G and relying on an interception to win by 5 points doesn't exude confidence.

Frost said, “They are all men of outstanding character and good coaches, but as we strive for better consistency and execution, we needed fresh ideas and voices on our offensive staff.” What assistant coach would want to move to fricking Lincoln, Nebraska and probably be fired along with Frost a year from now.

Pat Forde makes me laugh my ass off. https://www.si.com/.amp/college/2021/11/08/scott-frost-returns-nebraska-football-2022

Wow. That's a pretty good column.

One tidbit:

He has cemented a fourth straight losing season. The last Cornhuskers coach who did that was Bill Jennings, who never turned in a winning record in five seasons on the job from 1957 to ’61. Jennings’s winning percentage was .310, worst in school history for any coach who got more than two seasons. Second worst? Scott Frost at .357.

Flop was supposed to be the SAVIOR. Instead, it's been 60 years since Little Debbie has had such a lousy head coach.

I hate to agree with you but I also feel they’re turning the corner. The head scratcher is they’ve been competitive in every game regardless of opponent. Personally I think it comes down to Martinez trying to do more than he’s capable of.

they will be turning the corner into another ditch when they fire him next year and start all over again with a new head coach

Yes, there has been progress made. Both lines have developed, the defense is a lot better and he has brought in talent.

Yes, there has definitely been progress made. The defense is a lot better, the lines have developed and he has brought in talent.
However, so many one score losses over four seasons points to a coach that runs an undisciplined football program. He has yet to control stupid penalties, fix chronically poor special teams (other than Culp in ‘20) or stop turning the ball over.
Not to mention that he has the character quality of Steve Alford. Throwing players under the bus, blaming Mike Reilly for the state of the program when he took over and bringing in an alleged sex offender are just some of the ways that he has shown deficient character. Not to mention Clapgate, trying to get out of playing Oklahoma and his team’s violation of Covid policies by practicing last year.
Trev Albert is just prolonging this train wreck to lower the buyout and not look like the bad guy. He also knows that with LSU and USC already looking for coaches, that he has very little chance of landing a name coach.

Alberts knows he’s not doing any better than Frost. This little act buys him and Flop several more years. Those fans are so hopelessly stuck in the 90’s they’ll buy anything that indicates change is progressive and betterment.

Serious question. If Flop can't turn this thing around, can anyone? Even if they identify "anyone," will that person want to coach/live in Lincoln and agree to become the next head coach?

Sounds like he threw his assistants under the rug to save his own ass. NU just can't admit they made a mistake. I'll give him 2-3 more years and then the coaching carousel will continue.
Yup, really classless move, kind of what you expect from that program. Can't imagine that sits well with the players, seeing their position coaches thrown under the bus.

I too think Nebraska is turning the corner, and if they don't make their usual stupid mistakes I think they beat us this year. Our offense will have trouble moving the ball on them, and Martinez will probably look like an All-American against us.

Would disagree, Wisconsin and Purdue are playing well and are very capable.

So they have to endure one more season with Frost and then they'll move on. He's an awful coach and this was probably a good move by the AD to save them 8.5 million dollars. What's one more year of losing when you've had 5 losing seasons in a row?

I dont think so. I dont think anyone will be able to bring Nebby to what they were. Maybe some top 10s and a Big10 title game every 10 years, but the days of contending for a title are long gone

Seems like firing 4 assistants at this point in the year would hurt them more than axing the head man. It's all about money (buyout).

Actually, it looks like a rock solid move by Trev - cut $1M from Frost’s salary and slashed the buyout beginning next year. I would imagine next year will be Frost’s last at Nebraska unless he’s able to flip things around pretty substantially.

Not to the 90s level, but yes someone could. Just hope they don’t hire Bill Obrien or someone like that

Trev just divulged the new contract layout. 4mil next year down from 5mil.

7.5 mil buyout, down from 15 mil.

Sounds like Trev has practiced negotiating skills at UNO.
there had to be compromising pics or something else incriminating involved. nobody can be dumb enough to voluntarily take that deal. that ad’s crushed sf. wow.

Bottom line is Alberts made it easier to fire Frost next year if they don't improve. If they turn it around, he can pay Frost and the Lincoln sportscasters can go back to singing Frosty the Coachman. Actually a smart move by Alberts. And hey, the "sellout streak" continues.

Disagree …….. he is 90% of their offense, take him away - they really don’t have much else….

Count me in the column of folks who would love to see Nebraska never win again, but as others have pointed out, they are improving. You can point to coaching if you want to as the reason for the gaffes that caused them to lose the close ones this year--be it Martinez trying to do too much, or special teams, or whatever, but they are right there.
I REALLY hope I'm wrong, and we get our $hit figured out, but I think we'll need to get 4 turnovers to pull out a win in Lincoln. Thankfully that's not a tough number if Martinez is in the right mood, but I can see us losing by two scores pretty easily. Again, I hope to hell I'm way off and it's another laugher in our favor, but this is one of four remaining games that scares me.

The inherent contradiction in yesterday's moves is undeniable.

The program has shown improvement and is moving in the right direction, so he gets another year. But...we're going to fire the assistant coaches who helped create that improvement.
