Speaker Mike Johnson pledged Saturday that the House would hold a vote next week on legislation to speed $17.6 billion in security assistance to Israel with no strings attached, a move likely to complicate Senate leaders’ efforts to rally support for a broader package with border security measures and aid to Ukraine.

Surprised Johnson didn’t do this sooner

White House sees House Israel bill as 'a ploy' and 'not ... a serious effort'

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan says that security for Israel "should be sacred" and subject to politics. Sullivan says the White House supports a bipartisan deal underway in the Senate because it would "solve all of the major national security challenges" including support for Ukraine and the southern border.

Doesn't sound very America First, which of course no one will care about. And on a similar note, Israel is an advanced and rich country who are far more powerful than their opponent, do they really need the assistance? Why not charge them for it or at least make it a loan?
Israel has a population of under 10M. Without US support they cease to exist.

Israel already gets enough money from the US every year-3.3 Billion in 2023. And they are just fighting terrorists. He should bring up the package to aid Ukraine. This decision to help only Israel is very worrying for me-is the House really in Putin's pocket?!

Thought one of the big GOP talking points was no foreign aid. Unless we take care of the border.

Without the $17.6B they will cease to exist? That's quite the take. Hard to believe that you seem smarter with your laughing emoticon only responses.
The $ amount is a valid point of debate.

Your post I responded to reads like you want to eliminate assistance.

Exactly. Why is aid to Israel sacred?

Both sides should dig in and say no aid for Israel and no aid for Ukraine until we get some border security.

There will be a lot of D no votes…which is probably one of Johnson’s objectives
And, there you go. The only point of this bill. It's DOA in the Senate, and a slap in the face of the bi-partisan work being done in the Senate. This is purely a move by Johnson to serve Orange Jesus, and not any attempt at effective leadership and governance.

It’s called politics…surprised he didn’t do it sooner.

He’s the Speaker of the House. He needs to produce something that addresses the situation at the border, or every R in a tough district gets hammered. It might also negatively affect R turnout. Doing nothing is not an option after months of demanding action and describing the situation as a crisis.
