Looking at their personnel and how they play, Garza is the elephant in the room.

Our Man has been our best defense but I don't think he can defend Omoruyi outside... and I don't want to see any more ball screen defense. Will we have to rely on more zone?

We will need to own the glass and not give up 2nd chance points like we did vs the bigger GCU.

Going to be a chess match.

Starters matchup?

Garza 6'11" 265 Sr / Omoruyi 6'6" 235 Sr
CMac 6'5" 215 Jr / Williams 6'6" 214 Jr
Wieskamp 6'6" 212 Jr / Figuerua 6'6" 200 Sr
Fredrick 6'3" 195 Jr / Duarte 6'6" 190 Sr
Bohannon 6'1" 175 Sr / Richardson 6'5" 180 Jr

Bench:
Ke Murray 6'8" 215 Fr / Dante 6'11" 230 So
PMac 6'9" 200 Fr / Lawson 6'8" 205 So
Toussaint 6'0" 190 So / Hardy 6'2" 190 Sr
Perkins 6'4" 210 Fr / Estrada 6'4" 207 So
Ulis 6'3" 185 Fr / Terry 6'0" 165 Fr

Is that you Fran? In case you hadn't noticed this board doesn't have a lot of answers.

Lots of Ke Murray on Duarte. They rely heavily on the 3 pointers so we must fight over screens and not get caught underneath.

we need to be connected defensively.... need to communicate and I'd like to see us switch on screens and have to rely less on help/recover so we can stay at home on shooters.

I don't want to see Garza trying to hedge screens and getting us in scramble. Rather he keep back and take our chances on them making 3's (playing with fire a bit I know)

I agree completely on the switching over help/ recover. The mismatches will be minimal with them all being similar size, just communicate and switch rather than risk getting out of position

Really tho all we can do is just hope Oregon misses their open 3s?

No. Just make 3’s at a ridiculous clip and any team can go all the way to cutting down the nets. Almost no team has more capable shooters than the Hawks. Trade off is defense unfortunately, but just make them on O and that ceases to matter.

It has to be man-to-man. And we'll NEED out bench!

Garza won't be able to defend Omoruyi. If he cannot out perform him (dishing on double-teams, and/or scoring), then we need him to play closer to 30 minutes, than 40.

Keegan, PMac, JoeT, Perkins will need to shine.

And CJF needs to man-up!

It will be interesting to see how Garza plays defense. There us a strong chance he causes some foul trouble for Oregon. I see it being played similar to how we played against OSU.

As I just posted in another thread, Oregon will shoot a lot of threes, and the team that makes shots wins the game. We can play good defense but they could be red-hot and come away with a win. That’s basketball. What we can control is boxing out and dominating the boards. Make sure their shots are contested and don’t give them second chance opportunities (while getting a few offensive rebounds of our own), and that will go a long way towards winning

Yeah. The Hawks tried this earlier in the season and lost games where they scored 80+ points. That ain't gonna get it done.

Thats not true, they shot below the season average from 3 in almost every loss with a couple of exceptions:

4-22
10-30
5-23
10-25
14-32
8-21
6-19
8-24

Career Starts Iowa - Garza, Wieskamp, Bohannan, Fredrick, & Connor - 457 Oregon Starters - Omoruyi, Williams, Figuerue, Duarte, Richardson - 155

Who do you think has the advantage...? Experience matters....

Of their top 6 guys in minutes, 4 are Seniors and 2 are Juniors.

Of their two leading scorers and best players, Omoryuri is 24 years old, and Duarte will turn 24 in June...

You think that’s an experience disadvantage?

So yeah, like I said, lets hope Oregon is off from 3 land because we won't be defending it.

One thought I have had about Iowa this season. Play the hot hand and sit a player that is having an "off" game.

Every one one the court has to contribute to the game. Scoring, rebounding and defense.

Huh? TJD is one of the best posts in college basketball and 6'9" 245lbs.

Who does Oregon have like him?

Their other starting post, Race Thompson is 6'8" 228lbs.

Indiana is not a small team.

Indiana didn't play a true post all year. TJD is a forward and the size between the 2 teams is nearly identical. Indiana goes 6'9, 6'8", 6'4", 6'4" and 6'1 in their starting lineup. Not a big team at all.

C’mon man. Indiana isn’t a big team, but there is a world of difference between 6’9, 245 and 6’8, 230 vs. 6’6”, 235 and 6’6’, 215.

My only point was that sometimes smaller more athletic players can play big and bigger less athletic players can play small. TJD and the Hoosiers didn't outmuscle the Hawks. They were more athletic and they more than held their own on the inside bothering Luka with a lot of help. On the flipside Luka and the Hawk defense struggle when he gets pulled high on defense in the M2M forcing Iowa to play zone. Iowa's zone is not very good.

I know nothing about BB but couldn't we play a zone with 1 under and 4 on the 3 pt line, with their height the 1 wouldn't have to be LG and LG could cover 10 ft of 3pt line. Game comes down to their mid range jumper vs LG in the paint.

Oregon being a "small" brings back old nightmares of a "small" Cincinnati NCAA tourney team coached by Bob Huggins whose tallest player was 6'7 in post. They that blew out the Alford coached team within 5 minutes.

I think this Iowa team is better equipped/takes care of the ball better to deal with athletic teams. Iowa can't have a lot of turnovers and give up bunch of fast break points.

I think this is a more likely a game where Iowa has to outscore Oregon and defense is not the key. I could see the zone working okay if Garza can guard the smaller Oregon center in the post without needing double team help. Garza needs to bring it defensively inside the paint. Oregon center might go off for 30 pts from 3pt line but Garza is just as likely to get 30pts himself.

Fair enough - I can agree with that. Fortunately, most of what I have seen suggests that Oregon’s lineup is mostly wings rather than super quick guards. While their length could bother our shooters - and they are certainly quicker than Iowa’s guards - I don’t think their help defense will be quite as effective as Indiana’s.

Oregon is small and athletic. They like to drive and kick. I’d say scrap the M2M & zone it up, making them drive through multiple defenders and have to kick it out through multiple defenders with arms up.

According to an article in the QCTimes and Don Doxsie this morning Oregon has faced 1 team this year with a player close to the size of Garza, USC on Feb 22 against Evan Mobley the Pac-10 player of the year and lost by 14 points. Garza is going to by a matchup nightmare for them and I'm hoping the Keegan and Patrick can use their height as well to inflict immense pain on the Ducks.

P.S. After doing additional resource, I found that Oregon did face some Pac-10 teams that had height in Luka's range and taller and won those games but struggled. Still they haven't faced a player like Luka and it will be an eye opener for them....

Iowa's best defender/rebounder is Keegan Murray. Hoping he plays more than 20 minutes.

Keegan needs to control his fouls if he wants to play that much. Seems he’s often times getting whistled for silly fouls away from the basket. Freshman mistakes that he needs to eliminate in order to get up to 25-30 mins.

I wish the Hawks kept their arms up on D, especially in a zone.

I understand that he's had some foul problems but he's fouled out once all year and has only had 4 once in the last nine games. Fran has been far more effective at keeping Keegan off the floor than the zebras.

Loyola was really good at keeping their hands up and picked up a few turnovers just because a ball got passed into their arms or hands. It was a thing of beauty.

Iowa wins this game by feeding Garza over + over, when the duck starts playing body bumping against Garza, turn lose JoeT, PMac, and Murray to attack the basket up tempo.
IOWA WINS !!
