How does Fran bring in 5 guys next year with not many spots available?

I’m not saying this will happen, but I wonder if Connor sees tremendous success in baseball this spring if he would make the decision to stick with that sport and end his hoops career.

I don’t see Connor giving up basketball. Even if he doesn’t play that much in basketball, he will still be a body in practice which would help his dad. I think Connor will play all four years (five) of basketball.

Joey T will be the most likely redshirt. Deep at this position with experienced and better players. If Moss stays CJ will get a few minutes but the rotation will be pretty much the same as this year. C McC might start if Moss leaves, which would open up a little more time for CJ and maybe even a few minutes for Joey T.
I doubt JT is coming from NY to redshirt. Quotes saying the coaches have told him counting on him to be contributor next year.

I'm hearing Moss will explore the grad transfer route since he will be a redshirt senior

Unless you can identify a source (not by name or position-but by closeness to the program-etc) I'm not buying this. First, I doubt we would know this, this soon after the season ended....Second, he would be a RETURNING STARTER.....this just makes no sense.

That said, crazier stuff could happen but this doesn't add up.

Play the best 9 and no more unless we hit major foul trouble or injuries. If everyone returns:

Cook
Garza
Wieskamp
Bohannon
Moss
Kriener
Patrick
Joe T
Nunge or Pemsl

I’m not sure why people think Patrick is slow. I’ve seen highlights of his games and he doesn’t look slow at all. He can shoot long distance, he can dunk, he can dribble the ball up the court. He’s ranked as high as 58th by Rival or ESPN. I think people are unfair to Conner and Patrick because they’re Fran’s kids. Conner was the one who passed the ball to JBo for those last second heroic shots.

CMac is not a Big 10 level player. Unless he is able/willing to take open shots he never will be. He played decent in the OOC when he could use his height and weight against smaller guards. But in conference, with a few exceptions, he was a liability on both ends of the floor.

First time I've heard we are deep at PG

Assuming Cook is still on the roster:

Garza/Kriener
Cook/Pemsl
Wieskamp/Nunge/P McCaffery
Moss/Fredrick
JBo/Tousssint/C McCaffery

If they all return (Cook and Moss), you’re looking at 12 guys looking for PT. I don’t think Cook is coming back, but I like to see a smaller rotation regardless if he returns or not.

Depending how soon Tousssint develops or how ready he is, JBo can easily take the two spot.

Problem with this is that I don’t want to see Nunge at SF. He supposedly has put in a bunch of bulk and muscle, so I’m guessing he is heir apparent at PF. I know Fran is prone to hyperbole but his quote was “Nunge is dominating practices”.

I really hope that is true (or even partly true). I think Cook leaves as well and if Nunge is ready to go and play the PF with better shooting and being able to block some shots, that would be ideal with Kreiner and Penske being energy guys off the bench 15-20 minutes a game. Plus, Pemsl would bring a nice change of pace from Nunge’s game.

At SF, I fully expect Wieskamp to be playing 32 minutes a game and if Patrick doesn’t redshirt, he would get the remaining 8 minutes to give him rest.

Beyond that my biggest concern by far is the SG position.

As a 5-10 minute back-up PG he is fine. It’s because people are trying to compare him to starters that he doesn’t stack-up. He is a Freshman back-up PG. i imagine also he will work on some of his weaknesses and get better. I don’t think he will ever be a good starting PG in the Big Ten but he will be perfectly fine as a tough, smart low minute back-up PG.

I will not be overly disappointed if this happens. Ideally, Fran would bevlooking for an upgrade over him at SG anyways in the Grad Transfer market.

Will be a cold day in hell when Fran decides to explore the grad transfer market.

He already starts for a B1G university team. Why would he pursue a grad transfer? Not doubting you, it just doesn't make sense.
I tend to agree that hell transfer out. He'll lose playing time next year and could easily get 30 min a game at somewhere like Bradley or Illinois State

Totally agree, it would make no sense for Moss to grad transfer.

Patricks only problem is his weight and like Uthoff, it will remain a problem. Patrick can play at the 3 and will be a good back up for Joe and can absorb some of Baers minutes. Patrick is very skilled but he's not a banger. OTOH he would probably benefit greatly from a red shirt.

Uthoff was All Big Ten...........not sure his weight or thin build had anything to do with his being Drafted into the NBA. Plently of thin, Very Successful hoopsters, such as George THE ICEMAN Gervin;

Patrick McCaffrey will play, right away, just like Joe W

If Cook comes back then I could see CP maybe transferring and quite frankly I think there is a greater than 50% chance that Cook comes back bc, honestly, he isn't ready for the NBA and I do think the likes being with his teammates...but who knows. If Cook leaves then CP should get ample playing time at the 4.

I am not sold on Nunge, he has to show something before I throw my hat into that ring but it sounds like he is improving. That guy appears to have a great basketball frame but at 6'11" he doesn't do the team any good floating out at the 3 point line all the time, he needs to use that height and body and be willing to bang down low some.

Freedrick feels like a spot minutes guy at this point in his career and with all the other parts Fran has coming back.

I think PMac will step in for Baers minutes as he seems to be that good however we and the scouts could be wrong there as Baer had some intangebiles that are hard to measure. Then hoping JoeT is as good of a defender as advertised and can pentrate at the college level like it appears he will be able to and he could get 10-15 mpg (many might come from Connor expense).

I really think it depends on CJ really being able to play BIG pg.

I don't think CJ will be a PG at all. My guess is IF he is used at all in a meaningful way next season it will be like Ellingson or JO was used.

Dailey & Cook Grad Transfer + Joe T Redshirt

1: JBo/CM
2: Moss/CJ
3: Weezy/PMAC
4: Nunge/Pemsl
5: Garza/Kriener

I do really wonder if Moss comes back.
For everyone who says, but he's starting at a Big10 school since a sophomore: His minutes and points decreased from Sophomore to Junior season. He rarely played in closing minutes of game because of better options.
When you look at player efficiency, the offense ran better when McCaffery was in since Moss was generally the 4th best option behind, Jbo, Wies, Cook and Garza and Connor would work to get one of them a better shot rather than times when Moss forced it.
Moss could easily be a 25 pt scorer in a Valley/MAC program next year. If McCaffery gets better or Joe T wants minutes, they have to come from somewhere and JBo and Wieskamp aren't giving them up.
Moss can be a great volume scorer on an average team, but he's not as efficient on a team with lots of weapons.
It would be great if he comes back, but he is very HOT/COLD as evidence by his 15 pts plus in a half but almost nothing in second.

I see it is more likely that Moss/Weezy/PMac (with bits of JoBo when not at the point) split most all of the minutes at the 2-3 position and then PMac might even get some in at the 4.

Think a fast pace needs a larger rotation than Wisconsin. But I did notice that Iowa’s rotation minutes got more concentrated in a smaller number of players later in this season. Perhaps that’s a sign of rotation-management to come?

The fact that JoeT was signed with JB and Connor already at PG indicates that Fran recognizes the need for JoeT’s skill set in the rotation. More of it is needed in 2020.

Too many players to choose from? That’s too bad. I prefer that to the alternative, especially in a fast-paced style.

Fran has deferred to Baer over Moss late in games for the past 3 years. Guess who’s graduated and who’s a senior next year?

I think if Connor decides to continue playing basketball, he will really surprise some people next year. He has a better 3pt shot than people think, and was able to hit a few big 3s down the stretch this year. If he can get some confidence from beyond the arc, he will be s tough guy to guard. He can get to the rim and finish, as he proved in New York early in the year. He was a big reason we won that tournament and a big reason we beat Iowa State. He definitely hit a freshman wall in the middle of the year. It happens. But I think he has a solid career ahead of him, if he chooses to continue playing. I wouldn’t be completely shocked to see him completely focus on baseball though. We will see.
I have a feeling he'll do the 2 sport thing 1 more time to play with Patrick at least one college season, even if Patrick redshirts.

This...I could see MD maybe transfering but that is about it (maybe CP if TC decides to stay).
Forgive me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t Pemsl lose a full year of eligibility if he transfers? He’s using a redshirt this year, correct?

In my opinion, the likeliest to transfer and/or leave (I’m not saying they will, though) would be:
Cook — I just think the draw to pro ball will be too much for him.
Dailey — I think minutes will be hard to come by.
Moss — Grad transfer.

Again, just an opinion and I’m certainly not saying any or all will go.

you prefer that but I am sure 13 guys don't prefer that--they don't want to sit and get 4 minutes a game.

From the academic side and not the athletic side....think tumor but with a key letter replaced...wink wink

If CP has his under grad degree could he still grad transfer, obviuosly not sure he would have finished up in 3 years.

Attrition happens.
And Fran’s rotation minutes, even with the nine scholarship players available, were tighter than they have been for some time.

He’ll have to earn his minutes. But JoeT is certainly a step in the right direction as far as team needs.
