How does Fran bring in 5 guys next year with not many spots available?

Iowa did have a shorter bench than normal during the Fran era, but we also produced less in transition this year as well.

I don't mind playing more guys as long as we have a set 10 man rotation and the rest play in all our 20 point blow out wins ;)

really, we could have used more depth this year at times, especially up front when Garza and Cook were injured or in foul trouble. I think Toussaint and return of Nunge give us some needed components that were missing. Along with Pemsl's toughness.

Be interesting to see the different combinations we can also use. Going small and running more?

Cook
Wieskamp
Moss
Bohannon
Toussaint

From the academic side and not the athletic side....think tumor but with a key letter replaced...wink wink

The log jam appears to be with the bigs (mostly especially if Tyler stays) meaning our bigs should be ok risking a bit more on D and going for more shot blocks.

Baer is not a burner. . Your contention is Patrick at 2 inches taller is as quick as Baer, seems doubtful. Then add the inexperience factor.

Patrick might be okay in zone defense at the 3 to steal a few minutes while JoeW is resting, but out zone defense is nothing to brag about. In B1G, Iowa was last in scoring defense, 13th in FG defense, 10th in 3pt defense. If Fran wants to improve, start with improving the defense.

Patrick is far quicker than Baer. Not even a question.

That by itself doesn't make him a better player though. Not even a better defender.

I would love to see us step up the pace next year and make revolving lots of guys in/out.. Somehow make that work.

That pace Tennessee was playing at to start the game I realize that was partly due to Iowa's turnovers, but still..just wow.

Iowa doing that in the B1G could blow some doors off and not let up. Mix in some full court press, wear the opposition out like a Dr. Tom 2.0 or something.

Tennessee's pace early was almost entirely due to Iowas play.

Only if Fran is going to reward defense over offense.

To date his 2 foul rule has accomplished the opposite.

Our bigs have played very passively on D to avoid fouls to stay on the court and get their shots.

CMac is not a Big 10 level player. Unless he is able/willing to take open shots he never will be. He played decent in the OOC when he could use his height and weight against smaller guards. But in conference, with a few exceptions, he was a liability on both ends of the floor.

That's actually not accurate at all.

I tend to agree that hell transfer out. He'll lose playing time next year and could easily get 30 min a game at somewhere like Bradley or Illinois State

Except, hed be playing at Bradley or Illinois state....and why would he want to do that?

If Cook comes back then I could see CP maybe transferring and quite frankly I think there is a greater than 50% chance that Cook comes back bc, honestly, he isn't ready for the NBA and I do think the likes being with his teammates...but who knows. If Cook leaves then CP should get ample playing time at the 4.

I am not sold on Nunge, he has to show something before I throw my hat into that ring but it sounds like he is improving. That guy appears to have a great basketball frame but at 6'11" he doesn't do the team any good floating out at the 3 point line all the time, he needs to use that height and body and be willing to bang down low some.

Freedrick feels like a spot minutes guy at this point in his career and with all the other parts Fran has coming back.

I think PMac will step in for Baers minutes as he seems to be that good however we and the scouts could be wrong there as Baer had some intangebiles that are hard to measure. Then hoping JoeT is as good of a defender as advertised and can pentrate at the college level like it appears he will be able to and he could get 10-15 mpg (many might come from Connor expense).

The NBA isn't part of the equation for Cook. Hes not an NBA talent.

Leaving early for a relatively small amount of money with only 1 year left to get a free degree would be an extraordinarily bizzar life choice but to each their own.

How many did we have rotating in this year starting 5, then baer, connor , Kriener and dailey, so 9 guys. Just think it's going to be hard to split up playing time.

It is a net gain of 4 guys. All of which Fran will see deserving playing time... Pemsl, Nunge, CJ, Joe T, and PMac.

We lose a lot in Baer. I personally think his leaving the team will be much more of an impact than just about anyone on the team. Good stats. But the intangibles....

That is 20 minutes a game. That can only make 2 guys happy. You can carve out a few minutes from the other players. Maybe 15 minutes? Two more guys. That seems like a lot.

Cook
Garza
Wieskamp
Bohannon
Moss
Joe T
Nunge
CMac
Kriener
Pemsl
Dailey
Fredrick
PMac RS

There are some Good players there. I would like another guard or wing or 2. Grad transfer is possible. But someone would need to sit.

Connors best games of the year were vs UConn and ISU.

He was never quite the same after his concussion.

There's 13 spots on every basketball team. Why is there always this consternation of what to do with them all? Would you rather just have 7 good recruits and 6 cheerleaders on the bench?

I would rather have 13 scholarship worthy players and then play only the 9 best.
