How fat is it where you live?

I hope you know at this point through a lot of good chats that I'm not a "gym bro." Why does everything have to be so black and white around here so much? jfc.

Sorry man, I don't know anything about you and was just pushing back on you calling me ignorant when I was interested in your perspective. The gym bros and viking spawn was a joke about the amount of bodybuilder like frames giving me their pro-athlete like stats.

I have no clue, probably below 1%, not sure if you noticed but I did mention in the big picture you were correct

You are are doing very well for yourself it appears
In my early teens I had some pretty serious back issues, including being unable to get out of bed for weeks at a time. Frigging debilitating pain.
Ole Doc Holland diagnosed it as scoliosis and he told me that my flexibility would always be compromised. He also warned that every extra pound I carried would increase skeletal stress. He suggested “light duty” as far as work and play were considered.
My response has always been the opposite, and the old marine I worked with for years used to say that pound for pound, I was the strongest guy he ever knew. The marine held PT records at boot camp in Beaufort, SC for years.
Being a big guy has its benefits I guess, but it seems that shedding poundage in later years is a good strategy.

That is great, kind of an amazing story, and I do agree with you. Thanks for the discussion!!!

I’m being honest. No supplements, my workouts aren’t that intense anymore. But I’m on the move most of the day and I’ve been lifting for 45 years with very few missed days over that time.

Just hit 62,000 pushups for the year. Right now I’m doing about 500 a day
Are you in prison? Just kidding… but seriously are you?

I would have to think BMI is a decent measurement for the broader population. I understand it would consider NFL players or people really into lifting unhealthier than they are. However, look around when you are out in public (not at the gym). The vast majority of people are not being skewed via extra muscle. Most are just overweight.

You are a total stud.
Just read some research that linked a push-up routine reducing heart issues.
The patent expires on Nivodisk glp drugs in 2026.
Generics will be out at much discount.
Our Medicare/ Medicaid systems need to catch a break from enormous diabetes and weight related costs.
Basically we need about 100 million to go on these drugs.
Does anyone really want to be obese?
Over the last year I have gone from 237 to 168 at 5'11".
I never want to go back but I Ok Now I need to be disciplined.
Glp worked for me, type 2 diabetic.

Your work is way more impressive than mine. To have the discipline to lose that kind of weight is incredible. Lots of willpower! WAY TO GO!

The data seems to be pointing to waist to hip and waist to height as better predictors of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type II diabetes than BMI. I think we may see a shift to those measures in the future.

By what standard though? BMI? That's a complete joke.
According to Rush University Medical Center, a healthy BMI for a 6'2" man is 19–24 for a weight of 148–193 lbs, and 25–29 for a weight of 194–232 lbs.

I'm overweight at 6'2", 207lbs by that scale.

I think if I did the Naked and Afraid challenge I'd come out the other end about 193 lbs.
I would be pretty skinny.

I can't really imagine 6'2" 148 lbs. That would look emaciated.

Wife and I come in at 263 pounds combined. People think we are fat where we live. Does that make us smaller than 50% of the people here? Living outside USA is awesome. Fresh seafood and fruit are amazing. Like 6 people fats here and they likely have medical issues.

Please tell me more about your workout routine (seriously). I'm almost 40 and in decent shape, not overweight but not jacked or a super active person (desk job, most activity is working on things around our acreage and occasional hikes). My goal is to maintain functional strength and mobility as I age and keep my cardiovascular health strong.

Where do you live if you don't mind me asking?

If the point of BMI is to predict Life Insurance risk then it probably works. My guess is heavy people, including hugely muscled ones, don't live as long as average. True?
My understanding is that there is a point where muscle mass can be detrimental, however reaching that level is extremely difficult for most people. To reach that kind of muscle mass you would typically need to be on drugs and it would require more time and effort than most people can afford.

All respect, Jerome.

At 40 I was lifting for about 45 minutes in the morning and then 45 minutes again at night. I think I have been blessed with a really high metabolism over the years. I never did what one would consider typical cardio. I never really followed a specific diet. Just tried to eat good food in smaller amounts during the day and night. Ironically I get most of my cardio still working on our acreage.

If I could be 40 again I would lift a bit less and really work hard on flexibility.

If you are limited for time and your primary focus is overall fitness I would suggest looking into supersets. You can get these workouts in quick. This isn't the best for building muscle because you lose volume due to the short recoveries but you also get some cardiovascular benefit with an elevated heart. More importantly having shorter work outs facilitates consistently which in my opinion is the most important factor in success. I bet if you did 30-40 minutes 3 times a week you will notice a difference.

BMI can be a good indicator for the majority of people if they don’t work out at all and are in their 30’s or above. But even having a little bit of muscle mass will greatly screw that chart.

CSB time. I had a physical for a job when I was like 22 years old. At that time I was 5-11 and 215 pounds, not a shred of fat on me. The doctor told me, with a straight face, that I was obese bordering on being morbidly obese. I started laughing, thinking he was joking, he got irritated and asserted he was serious.

Now I’m 48, 5-11 about 190. I don’t lift and workout like I use to. Because of my job, I’m active and on my feet all day. According to the chart, it says I’m overweight and should lose 10-15 pounds. That’s fair.

Piiiiiisssssstttt........only dead people don't have a shred of fat on them.

Lots of multi-millionaire Adonis types here at HBOT w/ hot smoking wives, girlfriends or both.

Me, I’m 50, 6’ 1”, 225 and workout three to four times a week in an intense fitness class to stay in shape that does both cardio and weights, walk the dog daily two to three miles, enjoy yard work, walk mowing a large lawn, and staying active. No pic wife with the same regiment for working out. We are guessed often to be in our late thirties to early forties when people ask about our appearance. My numbers are all good…heart rate, BP, cholesterol, as we try to eat healthy good meals, multiple small meals every day to keep burning the fat. But my BMI is high for my size and weight due to muscle tone. My doc says don’t worry about the BMI, keep working out and keep up the strength with a solid core as I’ll need that later in life to deal with getting old is what he says.

Oh, I’m working on being a multi millionaire but not there yet. Being college educated helps with all of these things and a good no pic wife to push me to do the things necessary to be fit as we get older and I have to turn down all the young hotties that like this total package. 😜

CSB and JK on the young hotties. The ones my age or a bit older or younger do take an extra look. Probably say damn, that guy is ugly but in pretty good shape for his age.

Much respect, dude. That’s a ton of work and unbelievable dedication - which is, I’m sure you’re aware - the absolute key to a desired outcome.

I got serious in 2002 when my dad died. Except for occasion breaks, I’ve been regularly lifting 3X/wk, about 75% compound exercises. Also completed more than a dozen marathons and a few ultramarathons along the way. Lost 37 ponds from my heaviest (212) and dropped a ton of body fat. Energy, mood, everything improved. I’m a lifer.

BMI across the population is a good, reliable metric for determining whether somebody is at a healthy weight. There are anomalies, of which I'm sure every fatass on HORT is not when they proclaim that they're at a healthy weight.

21.2 btw

Not surprised about Colorado. Have friends in Denver that I visit quite a bit and always comment on how healthy people look there. Helps that Denver promotes physical activity with all its hiking trails, bike trails, accessible locations thru walking, running, etc. Weed probably helps too.

I consider myself pretty healthy weight-wise and I felt like a fatass there.

Marathons and ultramarathons!!!! I couldn’t even dream of completing one of those. Excellent work!
