How much would it cost to fire Ferentz if we go 4-8?

It wouldn't happen this year. It would take empty seats in 2017 to even get that ball rolling at all. I'm not even sure we'd eat that buyout until after 2018 at best.

It doesn't matter. Kirk Ferentz is going to be the head coach until he decides he doesn't want to be anymore.
Literally Kirk Ferentz has Iowa by the balls. Whoever negotiated this contract and the last should be fired. It is absolutely terrible that KF holds all the cards on the athletic department.....

Due to state nepotism laws, Brian Ferentz reports to the Athletic Director. Technically, the AD could fire Brian Ferentz, without Kirk being able to prevent it. This is a "nuclear" option, since it would fracture the relationship that the University of Iowa has with Kirk and Mary Ferentz. I just don't see Kirk staying on as head coach if this happened, but there is no way Gary Barta would ever do this.
The number is 43 million dollars if Kirk is fired before the end of the season without cause, for losing. After the season it drops to 39 million dollars.

Under the new deal, if Iowa were to fire Ferentz for reasons other than a scandal or physical incapacity, he would be owed 100 percent of his guaranteed money in 2016 and 2017 and 75 percent of it between 2018 and 2020. For each of the years from 2021 to 2025, Iowa would owe him 50 percent of his salary. For each year between 2016 and 2020 that the Hawkeyes win at least seven games, one of the years from 2021-2026 would convert to a 100 percent buyout.

Pretty sure the AD has the authority to fire any of the coaches, not just Brian or daddy.
Maybe the best nuclear option is to hire new AD and fire entire coaching staff except for Kirk and not let Kirk decide on replacements.

Here's a thought: Apply enough pressure (stop attending games, constant media blasting, boosters threats etc.) to see if the assistant coaches leave before the roof caves. Don't see enough "yes men" out there that would want to come on board to coach the "system" here in Iowa City other than elders at the end of their careers or g.a.'s. The Iowa football staff does not get raided each year by other university's trying to strengthen their coaching staff are they? What does the KF coaching tree look like?
