HWC $146,785 Raised! Goal- 100K

They wouldn't know, but I suspect they nip it in the bud when asked by donors. If a donor asks if they should donate through the foundation or direct to the HWC, the foundation tells them they want it all.

They wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't. Now, that isn't to say they need to be dicks about it.

So, just to make it clear to everyone, you are free to donate to the HWC and the foundation doesn't need to know about it, nor can they do anything about it.

I donate $5k per yr to the HWC. 15k per yr to UI Foundation, so I can park where We do for FB games.
I've never, in 15 yrs, been asked or told where to donate my money. I don't consider us big donors either.
A few more increases in these seat licensing amounts, and they're going to price me out all together!

I'd like to hear from someone who has been told NOT to donate to the wrestling club, but to the Foundation instead, to share their first hand account of this conversation.

Go Hawks.

That's outstanding, Kranepool. Good on ya!

The Foundation has never made any attempts to re-direct my donations, either. It appears that the Foundation is obstructionist where the "big fish" donors (i.e., millions) are concerned. The idea that the University would discourage the HWC from approaching any donor of any type is absurd and completely out of line, IMO. It's sad to me that Iowa's one nationally renowned athletic program has to fight with one arm tied behind its back, thanks to its own Athletic Department. I'm not saying any rules should be broken or even bent in the slightest -- just that one of the historically greatest athletic programs in collegiate athletic history shouldn't have to battle with its own athletic department in order to thrive.

I dont believe the foundation or university is telling donors or alum where to donate--its not that.

But donors realize they dont get points for seating/parking ---and in reality a lot of donors think they are already donating by checking wrestling on the form.

The hard part is that they are not trying in ways to help us.It would take much effort on their part-- to make a huge difference.

A tiny example is our golf outings--for the most part Im emailing--posting and recruiting the same people every year--Imagine if the Iclub would promote our events in an email blast-

I gave the example of the Penn State Club booth in Bryce Jordan-- we could never do that.

In my opinion it wouldnt take a ton of effort for them to help us raise the money to endow the club.

Many here have hit in on the head--we have great coaches--these guys work harder then anyone I know--they care and their will to win is something that is hard to quantify. Our program leads the nation in attendance-- and although we havent
won recently our history is that we are the best program the last 30 yrs.

We deserve a club that is treated like others at many of the schools we compete against. We deserve facilities that are on par with other schools.

With that said we have always found a way to take care of our HWC athletes due to grass roots fundraising--that wont change.

You guys do a great job, but the U of I needs to change its philosophy. I'm pretty determined to help make that happen. As you say, major changes wouldn't need to be made in order for the U of I to make a huge difference for the HWC. Email blasts to support fundraisers would take virtually no effort, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I could understand the U of I's complacency if they were concerned about rules being broken, etc. And I admire the U of I and the Iowa program for strictly adhering to the rules. But there's a whole lot that can be done that's well within the rules, and it needs to be done. Yesterday.

Responding here and to novakht, what you both say is correct. Especially the foundation's need to have a change of "philosophy". The one thing I don't agree with is it would be hard for the foundation to do that. It's just like setting any goal.determine what you want to accomplish. Then determine what needs to happen, what roadblocks need to be overcome, how best to overcome the obstacles, then how best to achieve the end result. The foundation continually promotes their fund raising efforts based on their priority projects,,,ie, the hospital, endowing professorships, law school etc. they get behind the money making sport's initiatives...knowing none of the funds will come from them directly. Why? Because there are too many large contributers who are backing these projects and they do realize it will increase income in these sports. Hard to argue with any of the above. Think the argument and what needs to be addressed and changed is the foundations obsession of increasing their endowment year after year. Doing so as an end in itself. It appears that all they may listen to is money...making it and or losing it. Therefore, that is the place we need to approch them. Showing them how increasing funding forthe HRC, promoting a fund raising campaign to improve facilities, allowing the club to do more on their own to raise funds, will actuall be of benefit to THEIR overall goal of increasing their endowment. They have bought in to the value for them in having competitive sports teams we just need to help them expand their field of vision. I do know the recently retired of head of planned giving that might be a place to start,,,getting his perspective frm withi the foundatin and the best way to approach them, showing how it can be a win win. Sadly, they are the BIG player on this campus and they will need to win also.

Took my wife about 30 seconds to sign up. I would encourage anyone who uses Amazon to sign up for Amazon .5% contributions to HWC
This link really should be posted at the top of the board. Imagine tens of thousands of Iowa wrestling fans all doing this. Just another piece of a much larger puzzle, but it's such an effortless thing, it's a no-brainer. Every Iowa wrestling fan should be doing this.

I'm stunned, puzzled, amazed that the HWC is not fully funded/endowed. I had never given it any thought - I just assumed in the past that with the amazing success of the wrestling team since the early 70's, that the university would have done whatever needed to get the HWC, RTC, facilities, everything to be the greatest possible, far above any other university or even international, Every wrestler, every fan, every sport enthusiast, should be awed by everything related to Iowa Hawkeye wrestling (Grapple on the Gridiron was a huge event and it should have snowballed into so much more. We often say, and most people believe, that Iowa is the "mecca" of wrestling - let's takes steps to make it truly that! This isn't just talk on my part - I'm ready to step to the plate and take action (unfortunately not with my wallet, but with my skills, experience, etc.

It is a little puzzling that you wouldn't realize this based on the roster of "talent" in the HWC over the years. It has more or less been ex-Hawkeyes only, not exactly the cream of the crop in the wrestling world, and when they competed it was rarely if ever under the HWC flag.

Another way to boost contributions to HWC: Some employers provide company matching contributions for donations to eligible charitable organizations. Since HWC is a 501(c)(3) organization, they would probably be an eligible organization for company matching.

Thanks for the heads up, good to know!

Anyone know of any apps that send funds to a charity of your choice anytime you make a purchase with a credit card? I remember the altruist app did that, but it no longer exists.

Sometimes I'm a little slow recognizing apparent things  that's why we need each other, because no one person can think of or understand everything. Actually, I just had never given it any thought, and have never followed the activity of HWC (that's going to change!).

madmustang4--- I wasnt the one that said we are at a crucial time.

I am 1000% behind our staff-- they simply work their butts off... I have been around them a lot and they are not perfect, but I firmly believe they will get us back on top.

Lots of great ideas here-- we will work on them--and we will continue to do our very best to help raise $$ .

The big picture is absent a whale of a donor ( like some other programs have been blessed with) We need the admin to get behind a serious effort to endow the club and get behind an effort to bring our facilities up to date with the best in the nation.. and a sense of urgency would be even better.

I firmly believe that our fans would step up big time if the Foundation/IClub/Admin worked alongside us and with us --

BTW-- There is now AmazonSmile instructions and link on the HWC website. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

Amen, Randy!

Hawk fans stand ready to help, and there's an army of them, as you know. I agree that they'll jump in if given sufficient direction on how they can pitch in. Thanks for being so responsive with the AmazonSmile thing -- just a small part of a much bigger picture, but I'm confident we'll get the Hawks back on top soon.

Just signed up. Make sure you put smile.amazon before you order. Now, anyone know how this works on the Amazon app?
