I am not optimistic for next season with none or one and done Fran.

I’d probably expect:

good offense

mediocre defense and rebounding

a middle of the pack conference finish

something like an 8 or 9 seed if we make it, and you’ll be able to safely have a free calendar after opening weekend.

after 12 years it’s amazing I could predict that isn’t it?

There is talent on next years team but they need a transfer or two to make the dance next year. Keegan was a do everything this year. He will be much harder to replace than Garza. Kris will take a leap but there will be a big hole in the post with very little if any depth. The backcourt even if improvement from the returners will need a transfer combo guard. Our backcourt was exposed in the tourney again this year. Its beginning to look like thr backcourt issues are actually hidden in the B1G. Maybe the B1G as a whole has a backcourt problem.

Assuming Keegan is gone, Iowa will be lucky to make the NIT next year.
THIS! Seriously, if Keegan is gone, you pressure and get physical with Sandfort and then Kris is your only regular scoring threat. I pray I’m wrong but next year could be painful to watch.

sounds about right...maybe also throw in at least one feel good/hard working walk-on storyline though... ;)

People were all gloom and doom about this season last Spring and Summer and they were wrong. 26 wins and a B1G tournament championship are fabulous accomplishments. Did we suck today? Yes indeed we did, but it does not diminish what this team was able to accomplish after losing so much fire power. We have no clue what next season will bring but I am looking forward to it.

Remember that tweet a while back about Fran interested in other jobs?
Maybe he wont be here.
Fran and Brian Ferentz are both being tracked at the Iowa city airport.

To play devils advocate, what would it take for you to not be "looking forward to it"?

I expect Kris to make a giant step forward with his scoring and rebounding. Maybe not what keegan did but 15+ppg/7+rpg
I expect minimal improvement out of the others but if Perkins took a big step forward next year I wouldn't be surprised. He seems to be one of those guy's who's capable. What Iowa needs badly is a blue collar big guy.

I like some of the optimism here, but I don't have a lot of it. This feels like the type of loss that will set the program back several years, a la 2006. The question will be if Fran will be allowed to rebuild again. I don't see him having KF-level untouchability, although that BTT Title (yippie!) will probably buy him the benefit of the doubt for another 2-3 years.

This program has got to have higher expectations than what we've had in the post-Davis era. The current droughts of 43 years without even a share of the reg season conference championship and 23 years without a Sweet 16 are both school records by a long-shot. And other than the 1997 season (2nd place and 4 games in back of vacated champs Minnesota and competitive loss to superpower Kentucky in round of 32) and 2019 (OT loss in round of 32), they really haven't come close to breaking either streak.

Maddening

The year they lost to Northwestern State they finished second in the Big Ten, I think just one game out.

Part of the problem is too many fans have been conditioned to think Iowa can’t possibly do better, and that a coaching change would automatically result in a return to a Lickliter level program.

Fran is not going to take Iowa to a Sweet 16. The sooner fans realize this, the better.
Agree 100%. Had first team All-Americans two straight years, and didn’t make it to Sweet 16.

I’ll have to research how many different programs have made a Sweet 16 in the 21st, and then the percentage of Power 5 programs that have made at least one Sweet 16 this century.

Teams like Butler and Loyola can make the Final Four……but some fans think it is unreasonable to expect Iowa to make a Sweet 16.

Unless Keegan comes back (lol), I’m struggling to muster up any more enthusiasm for next season than I did the Lick years.
Everybody talks about the lickliter years like they were the doldrums of the pacific. Year 1, everybody is excited, it's a new coach. Year 2 this guy stinks, Year 3, "get him outta here!" Yet his reputation and the way he is used by the Iowa fan base to look over mediocrity you would think he was 0fer a decade.

I mean, seriously - do you think it would be a good idea to fire Fran right now? If you had the power to make the decision, would you fire him?

I don't think I have ever seen a poster say "Iowa can't possibly do better", or "a coaching change would automatically result in a return to a Lickliter level program".

What I HAVE are posters that think it is unlikely that the next coach will do better and it's very possible they could do worse.

Everyone here wants Iowa to win championships and go deep in the Tourney.

And the Carver Crickets will still chirp.
So what do you suggest be done with donors who gave money in the early 1980’s to build the arena and were promised tickets? The reason there is an attendance issue is that these folks are well into their 70’s and 80’s but still continue to buy their season tickets and then may or may not show up.

This is easily seen when games are played that are not included in the Season Ticket package. For example the women’s game today will be sold out but that isn’t part of the season ticket package for those who contributed to Carver’s construction. Same with Wrestling, tickets for wrestling wasn’t part of the deal in building Carver so you see a much different level of attendance and noise level than for mens basketball.

Would really love to hear your solution to this problem.

Lickliter was terrible. I agree it has made fans myopic, but that’s on the fans who choose it.

Look, I’m not the world’s biggest Fran fan, but this season was his best coaching job in Iowa City. I don’t know why his team wasn’t ready to play yesterday and couldn’t overcome the hurdle of playing with a different basketball, but I will give Fran props for the season Iowa had.

Still, Fran should have been fired after the 2017-18 season. So, while our fans won’t tolerate Lick bad, they have certainly gotten comfortable with Tom Davis results. Ironic.

And then disappear. What we want is consistent winning in the tournament, BTT was a huge step forward that will be overshadowed now.

No! Common sense. Us fans believe long and Hard. Fran makes my "beer" turn warm. The thought I mean. Other coach and some of his "staff" cause spillage. Yup... Hawk Players waay tough. Fans are waay cool.
