I was a Costco member for 38 minutes today ( warning: very long)

I've been a Costco member for a long time and my experiences are just the opposite. Their staff is both friendly and helpful, the stores are clean.

I can't speak about the customers in your area, but here in metro Detroit, I don't recall any issues with Costco customers.
Same. And the gas is routinely ten to fifteen cents cheaper than anywhere but Sam’s. Plus I get up to 4% back on their CC that more than pays for the membership.

Were they giving out tobacco samples? Why the 18 yo rule?
My guess is the reason another poster mentioned. Kid eats something they are allergic to and gets sick/dies. Probably a liability thing with their insurance company to be able to give samples out. Like I said in my OP though, not one other kid was stopped and they were going up there without their parents. Not a world said. My kid grabbed the sample at the same time I did and it was the worst thing ever. Maybe
she was tired of it and we were the unlucky ones that caught hell, but it was just ridiculous the way she talked to me.

I will not step foot into Costco on Saturdays or Sundays.

I’m okay with going on the weekends, but my wife absolutely hates it because there are so many people.

Literally the only real complaint (as opposed to more minor things like bitching when a certain item I like is no longer available) I’ve ever had about Costco despite being a member there is how they handle their over the phone pizza orders. I’ve only done that once a couple of weeks ago as I said let’s just get a whole pizza half pep/half cheese since it’s just $10 and pretty good. So we ordered it by phone on a Friday night and they said ”it will be 30 mins.” So we went and looked around, grabbed a rotisserie chicken for later in the week and a few other things and then went to pick it up. They said, “Did you enter it into the system and pay for it?” We said, no just ordered online. So they directed us back to the main line and made us enter and pay for everything. Then an hour later we finally got the pizza. So wtf is the point of calling ahead? And before anyone says, that’s not what youre supposed to do…the Costco website itself says you are supposed to call ahead for whole pizzas.

I saw the immediate aftermath of an accident going into a costco parking lot last year, because they both drove by me while trying to see over/around their airbags. Parts of their cars were in the intersection and still falling off, but they both kept going so they could get to costco

Hey Costco members...

All the YouTube BBQ influencers say Costco has the best quality and price for brisket.

Can you confirm or deny?

Their brisket is fairly priced but I can’t speak to the quality. I have smoked pork butts, baby back and spare ribs from Costco and all have been good quality and well priced. Their ground beef is underrated also IMO.

Sorry that OP had a bad experience there, I’ve never had a problem there personally but our list doesn’t vary much from our usual list of about 20ish items we always buy there, we grab a couple new items now and then but it’s rare they become go to items. I recently got a new pillow there which is one of the best I’ve ever slept on and I always avoid samples there, just a personal preference of mine.

Sorry that happened. I’ve been a member for years through 4 different states and haven’t had a bad experience.

The ankeny store must suck.
Ankeny store is far better than the West Des Moines store. Less congested parking and rarely a fuel pump line because of more pumps. I would say that the customer service is better than the customer service at most retail outlets. Easy return policy. I have found that the employees at Costco are more polite than most of the shoppers.

Never had an issue with the Costco here in Tallahassee, other than never getting out of there without spending $500. Workers always seem nice and motivated (they make more than normal grocery store employees). My youngest now 11 has been grabbing free samples for years.

I do try to avoid on weekends.

It sounds like you either a) caught some Costco employees on a bad day or b) your free food grabbing, hot dog craving, shopping cart trashing 5 year old is a public menace to society.

My biggest issue is their philosophy of continually moving stuff around so as to force you to go hunt for it with the expectation you'll buy more stuff. The employees are less than helpful in finding anything like that, the last few I asked directed me to two different ends of the store.
That’s a good technique. In our stores we will move stuff around and our customers will say along the lines of “oh you have so many new things.” As a retailer, moving things around isn’t meant to trick the customer, it’s just meant so they see different items they may have missed in previous visits. Employees not knowing where the items are is not good however.

I've never encountered workers as rude as the ones there. **** that place. It takes a lot for my wife to get pissed and she was ready to throw down.

Incident #1. Walked up to a sample booth with my 5 year old. There were kids going up and grabbing samples left and right, no parents with them. My kid, who is right next to me, grabs a sample. Lady flew off the handle about him needing to be 18 and I have to grab them for him. I laughed, legit thought it was a joke, and she gets up from her perch and starts laying into me. Cool, been a member for 5 minutes and had no idea, thanks for calmly explaining your rules and doing a bang up job enforcing them.

Incident #2. As we were walking up to the checkouts, they had 3 drink sample stands that we stopped at. The final one didn't have a trash by it so I just held on to my cup and told my son to do the same until we found a trash. We get up to the checkout and my wife starts unloading the cart while I have my membership scanned by the checker, I had my wifes card as well because she had a 3 card slot on her phone that has her ID and 2 cards, so i was holding it. My son noticed people eating hot dogs and wanted one, so I told my wife I was going up to get him one while she checked out. 2 birds, one stone. 30 seconds later I hear my name and see my wife waving for me. She told me she can't use her card with my membership. Huh? Then the guy, in a very rude tone, explains the membership name has to match the card name. Again, didn't know that, was not told that signing up, thanks for the condescending tone. Then I hear "Jesus, I fricken absolutely hate it when people do this! There are garbage cans right next to the stands." I didn't even know what was happening, then see that my son crumpled up his cup and threw it in the cart. He looks up at me with sad eyes, and I simply told him it was OK, but he needs to throw trash away, not in the carts. I also told him that it's never ever OK to talk to people that way. In the middle of this, douchnozzle interups ne to ask if I needed boxes. I told him to hold on a second while I finish talking with my kid and he responded with "fine, take your chances on their being boxes out front, I'm loading your cart." At that moment I hear my wife yell NOPE, just leave it all.

We walked up to the guy that signed us up and told him we wanted out money back. He finally did after explaining the scenario to him. What a bunch if ****ing clowns they have working there. We did absolutely nothing that deserved the attitude and ass chewings we got. CSB/Ctl alt del. I look forward to the comments of them being amazing and we must have done something.
I've been a Costco member for decades. Their return policy is 2nd to none. I've never had a single issue at either of our San Antonio stores. That said, it sounds like you got a horrible batch of humans and if that were my first experience, I'd cancel my membership too.

Can’t wait for the story about a trip to IKEA from Derek. Should be captivating.

I'll never step foot in a store that specializes in selling low quality items you have to assemble yourself.
It's not all bad. I actually grabbed a display case that I lit with one of those back-light LED TV kits. It's metal and glass, so no assembly required. ...wife got some good stuff for her craft-room too, but ya, much of it is junk.

OP doesn’t understand the business model. In order to love Costco you have to be the kind of capitalist who believes the customer requires training. He probably has to go there a few more times before the stockholm syndrome really takes hold.

Up until Christmas trees started using LED lights, this is how I abused used Costco's life-time return policy:

  • Buy tree
  • Place receipt in safe
  • Tree light strand burns out after 2 years
  • Drag tree back up to store w/ receipt
  • Return for full refund
  • Apply cash to replacement tree
  • Rinse repeat for a decade until I bought an LED lit tree.

Meh, they just started cracking down on people loaning their membership cards to family and friends. I'm surprised they didn't do it sooner, but now I have to show them my membership ID before they let me go to the register...photo on the ID has to match my face.

FYI: The membership is $60 per year, not like it's going to break the bank.

Same.
Ours is great. Never once had an issue. I got hearing aids there recently and the specialists treated me wonderfully.
I have the luxury of going midday during the week. I doubt that the COstco employees are different on weekends, but perhaps the volume of customers is different.

Either way, Costco is very efficient in moving customers through the store.

Working weekend at major retail stores is similar to surviving a herd onslaught in The Walking Dead. They just keep coming with their dead vacant eyes and snarls.

They have been getting scammed by people using others’ membership accounts at the self-checkout, so I think that has required some changes recently.

Not a Costco member, never been. How are the booze prices? Asking for a friend.

We watched a customer return a dead live cut Christmas tree after Christmas was over for a return due to it being dead. We couldn’t believe the customer was doing this and Costco gave their money back. Unbelievable.

Wifey (no pic) talked me into getting some bedroom furniture from IKEA when we moved into our most recent house. Went with her and as we walked around, I thought hey, this stuff looks pretty cool. Then we got to the part where we had to pick out all the fvcking jigsaw puzzle pieces. Kill me now I thought. Then came the part where we had to put the California king bed together. It took a day and a half. We had a buddy that was visiting from Italy who was a pretty handy guy. Luckily, he and wifey put it together and all I had to do was serve drinks. At one point, I walked in, saw all the pieces spread out all over the floor and did one of these.

We would be divorced if I was on that project. Fvck that place, never going back.

Costco and Sam’s should advertise time periods where no samples are given. Cut down on the trash.

But I go just for the samples so it doesn’t bother me.

Still sounds easier than our King Bed project. Wife picked up two vintage front porch posts for a mere $300, then took me to an antique store to find a matching vintage, 5-panel door. I had to strip everything, sand, paint, seal, saw, blah blah blah...

Turned out well, though. Just bought a metal bed frame and attached it to the posts with 7/16 bolts.

Your wife paid $300 for what was essentially trash?
