If IOWA beats Duke all is forgiven

Duke played 9 players against Ohio State last night (Nov 30).

They started 4 freshmen.

Iowa's experience should come into play.

Duke Starters
--4 Freshmen

--1 Junior

4 Off the Bench
--1 Freshman
--1 Sophomore

--2 Seniors

Jacob Grandison (Class of 2017), a 6'6 Senior Shooting Guard, started out at Holy Cross. He arrived at Duke via the transfer portal.

Im sure their 7fters are great, thats why Ryan Young plays so much.
Looking at the Duke vs OSU box score. Young is 6-10 looks to be getting a lions share of PF mins. At Center they have Filipowski and Lively rotating and both on the court at times at C/PF. Both of the later 2 are listed as 7'1 & 7' and logged 50 mins. So 3 players 6'10 or higher playing a lot of mins. Everyone else for SF/PF was 6'6 to 6'8.

Anyone know if we are the home team or road team? Trying to figure out which section to get seats in.

TCU was and will be a top 15 team. They are just getting back to full strength. Iowa's a top 30 team. We would lose to TCU 8/10.
I agree, I don't think there is any doubt that TCU is very good team--they could be a Top10 team. TCU almost/coulda/shoulda knocked out #1 seeded AZ from the 2022 ncaa tourney. No dishonor losing to them.

Your Top 30 for Iowa probably is true, which means a run to the sweet16 this year probably takes a luck.

My concern would be the way in which they lost---TCU was able to shut down Kris Murray offensively and Iowa goes as Kris Murray goes. Part of Kris Murray's problem was his 3ball was off vs TCU, so maybe another game vs TCU he does better, but even he struggled finnishing inside the paint. The rest of Iowa's frontline fared even worse vs TCU. PMAC, CMAC, Sandfort, Rebraca all struggled. Iowa had a tough time competing on the boards vs TCU,.

There are a lot of athletic teams once Iowa gets to NCAA tourney and Iowa doesn't seem to do well against physical athletic opponents without a Finesse referee whistle. As much bragging there is about B1G being a tough/physical league, it really has been more a Big Man's league and once B1G teams get to the NCAA tourney, the B1G has been a flop/dissappointment for last 5 years or so because guard play/defense is more important.

Beating Duke, even a subpar Duke, is always a good thing, so all is forgiven for awhile.

And?

Can we put Keegan Murray in Uniform, give him Mulvy’s jersey and say he is Riley for the game?

Probably not, Keegan wouldn't pass for Riley,.. However, we might be able get away with using Keegan to spell Kris here and there..

I think this upcoming Duke game is why I was disappointed in last night's performance. Here is what I mean by that.

1) Duke is immensely talented, but they are not unbeatable. They don't have Coach K on the bench.
2) Patrick isn't playing up to expectations.
3) Payton isn't playing up to expectations.
4) Tony still seems bothered by an injury....and get the drift that this will linger.
5) Rebraca is improved but it seems like he will still struggle some against superior athletes with size (Duke).
6) IF we play up to our capabilities, beating Duke on that big stage is certainly possible.

So, by next week Tony needs to get healthy, Patrick and Payton need to pull out of whatever funk they are in, and we need to tighten up the defense a little more. There was a good stretch of defense in the middle of the second half last night.
We got a week between games now so I hope Fran gives Perk some real time off his legs. I am sure they will.

They may list Young as a "PF", but when he is in with Filipowski (which they use those two together the most), Filipowski is on the perimeter and Young is always down on the box. I fully expect Kris to need to guard Filipowski and Filip to be on Young when Iowa is in man. I'd expect the same on the other end of the court as well.

The level of competition will be harder. Rebounding vs taller players makes it harder. Iowa's rebounding margin, seems to directly relate to wins/loses.
Harder than what?

Not harder than TCU.

If rebounding was all about height Patrick wouldn't be awful at it.

Filipowski is a really good player but skinny.

If Ryan Young is major rotational player on your front court than it is not a great front court.

Iowa will face tougher front courts in conference. May as well get used to it.

Ryan Young is constantly banging into people, and I am sure Duke would gladly trade fouls on him for fouls on Rebraca, given Iowa's depth at 4/5. We need Kris and Rebraca to both play at least 30 min in this game.

I fear that our lack of physicality on the glass will stick out like a sore thumb against athletic teams like Duke. We need everyone to be more aggressive on the glass and have to be efficient on offense when we play teams that play tough man to man defense. Finally, we need to become the good 3 point shooting team we thought we would be to beat quality teams.

I only see 1 person on the TCU roster that is 6'10+. Not saying they were push overs cause they out rebounded us by 13, but I think Duke has a lot more depth. Maybe able to get us into foul trouble and wear us out a bit. Plus with the natural height, you usually rebound a bit better. You are right, we will face other teams like IU & Purdue with height in their frontcourt. This game is on a neutral court, so maybe our guys come out with a chip on their shoulder.

Height doesn't make a team great at rebounding. Strength and athleticism are equally if not more important as is effort and technique.

Im sure Duke will out rebound Iowa but so will most opponents.

Ill say this for a 3rd time and I'm done, If Ryan Young is one of your primary front line players its not that impressive.

You can either accept that opinion or reject it but it's not changing.

That dude was at NW for ever and isn't very good.
