Illinois play by play...

1. That was dismal. Totally pathetic. (Thanks, Stoll, for actually salvaging the win.)

2. To top it off, Terry almost lost the dual by inserting himself into the action. WTF?? Are you 5 f-ing years old?? He owes the fans an apology and should be reprimanded by Tom and Barta. Un-f-ing-believable display of poor judgment.

3. Ironside is 100% right to be pissed. I see no one is bashing him for being a negative influence on recruiting. Put the blame where the blame lies.

I'm still of the opinion that Downey is a must-have, and wrestling Lee this year is an almost-have if we don't want this to be the worst Iowa season in modern history.

Stock down = Tom Brands. And I'm pretty much just echoing Ironside, so spare me the fair-weather fan comments.
It sure makes me sad that Ironside and Tarp are right on all counts (once again). Wish it weren't so.
Even in my high school we'd have been running laps and doing extra drilling until exhaustion after a performance like that.
And if Terry can't control himself better, he needs a leash and a couple of linebackers to hold the other end of it.

man i hate people sitting around boohooing constantly.
Human nature, my friend.

So what can fans do? We can show up like never before, yell louder than ever before, encourage our guys to give it all they have, and support the HWC and the new facility like never before.

All of us want to play a part in the resurgence of Iowa wrestling. Just like it’s natural to piss and moan (and I readily acknowledge that a certain amount of that is often justified), it’s equally natural to want to take action to improve things.

The things I listed above are a great place to start, and they’ll all have a direct impact on the continued effort to optimize recruiting. So if you’re serious about being part of the solution, you’ll either keep doing those things or get started this week.

I watched the first half of the meet before I had to leave, so I didn't get to see the upper weights. It was just disheartening to see a team compete the way they did. The thing that I don't get is the TNT are supposed to be guys that preach "let it fly" and I see the exact opposite. What is causing these guys to clam up the way they did? Are TNT so intense that there is fear of failure?

Kemerer performance was the most surprising since he normally seems aggressive. It is one thing to have a down match/year but it would be nice to see some gutty performances even if they end up losing.

It has been trending this way for years, and it seems to get worse as guys are here longer. The two biggest problems I see are a) guys can't seem to get to their offense or show an inability to vary their offense, and b) a lack of first period urgency. "Fortune favors the bold" as they say, and a lot of our lighter weight guys don't seem to understand this and end up behind the 8-ball. This causes them to have to chase the match and with a ref like last night, their opponent can half-ass it the rest of the way, get dinged for stalling once MAYBE twice and be just fine.

It's been years since I wrestled and I'm not as hardcore as many of you who could probably pick apart what I am interpreting here, but that is what I am seeing from where I sit. It's particularly frustrating to watch guys wrestle down to an opponent's level, and it's maddening watching us consistently wrestle below seeds in March. Of course the talent issue is paramount, but you can't tell me that some of this doesn't come down to coaching.

difference between discussing problems and throwing a fit like a little bit**

That type of performance happens to all teams every year. It happens to PSU and it’ll happen again this year. There will be a match where a lackluster performance will have some over on BWI jumping off ledges and saying no chance we beat tOSU for the title.

I think a lot of it’s by design. I think coaches pick weeks where they beat down their boys all week in practice....wear them down and then finish it off by seeing how they work through the adversity. I think it helps prime them for a run at the end of the year. I think the Brands are great coaches so in my opinion some calling for their heads could very well be mistaking “not having his kids ready” for good coaching.

I actually think the Brands’s can develop wrestlers. I do question some of their over training methods, and some of their strategic coaching decisions, and leaving lineup holes unaddresses, but I do think they can develop wrestlers with the best of them. It’s a talent issue. These current kids come rin now way more developed because of the wrestling clubs. Now you don’t have to develop them as much, you just have to train them right and still develop some. It’s more clear who’s good coming out of high school nowadays with more national tournaments, and more wrestling clubs. In any sport, it’s a lot easier to get to your offense or look a lot better, if you’re more talented. And, it’s a lot easier to have fun if you’re more talented. I think it’s mostly recruiting issue, and the Brands just aren’t that good at recruiting. A Dedicated recruiting coordinator that can have a good working relationship with the coaches may help. That, would be $100,000 investment that would we be way better than upgrading the facilities. And they still need to upgrade the facilities, and when they do, don’t let the brands’s be in total control because they are so focused on wrestling they don’t care that much. They don’t care if there are cement brick benches and boulders surrounding the mats. Let’s take the brands’s best qualities and let them use those, because some of those qualities are exceptional. Let’s help them on their weaker qualities they have. I don’t mind them being the coaches, we just have to get something to change.

You are absolutely right very very flat and not acceptable. However, in three matches the Illinois wrestlers never even attempted a shot. At least both bowman and young wrestled and didn’t block off and back up for 7 minutes. If young had just held on when he was in instead of trying to score it very well may not have been a tech. Anyway you look at it we need to be more aggressive and push the pace. Possiblly the worst grade all night should have gone to the official who allowed things to “not” happen. He only called the fall after Stoll had pinned him for the third or fourth time. Illinois did what they set out to do, keep it close and we did nothing to prevent them from doing just that. Allowing a little less running would have helped in a few matches, however.

Should have been a lot more stall calls on IL wrestlers from the start. It’s one thing for them to have that strategy to keep us within striking distance for a win, it’s a whole other thing for the ref to not enforce the stall rule and let them take it to such an extreme. Ref can’t let them roll out team-wide stall like that (NOT looking at you, IMAR).

I posted this on another thread but this shows the Iowa team waking up on this night before taking a loss. You see excited wrestlers, coaches and fans. You even see a coach jumping a scorers table and disappear into the stands. Maybe we should scrap this whole thing and start over from scratch. Fire the coaches, get rid of our recruits, Fire the AD and maybe just eliminate wrestling from Iowa. Maybe our fan base does not deserve a wrestling program.

Who is David Riojas and why is he out there for ILL in a match when they have a chance to win the dual? Serious question. PBS, who is this guy?
Riojas has competed the last couple competitions for Illini. True frosh IL state champ. I used to coach him at the kid's club level.

I don't think we see Montalvo to atleast 2nd semester (if then) with them pulling Riojas' redshirt.

That's a great perspective on the fall. That's a lot of guys having -- dare say it -- a lot of f***. No, not a pretty meet overall, but our heavy showed his moxie and our guys were loving it, along with the fans. Not the ideal effort overall by any means, but we saw some toughness out of Stoll and a whole lot of passion out of our guys. A little encapsulation of what Iowa wrestling is all about. We'll get there, folks.

Yeah, our fan base that holds 99 percent of all the attendance records and has been traveling on a National level for 40 years to watch Iowa wrestle just doesn't deserve to have a team anymore. SMH

I am a fan to the end. I was being a smart ass but came off like a dumbass and my sarcasm failed....

I don't know who said it up in previous posts but hammering a RS Freshman for getting TF'd by Martinez is kind of stupid...especially after he had a decent showing against #4 plus he didn't wrestle not to get majored or TF'd. Look at it this way, ISU's most promising recruit (Storr) got pinned by Meredith from Wyoming in the first period w/o breaking a sweat. LIzak got beat by a freshman. Anthony Valencia got beat by Wanzek and Massa got beat by Wick. A whole host of other upsets and Rutgers got beat by Lock Haven. If you aren't elite, you are not safe. We are not this year with six new starters in the line up.
That's all this board does is hammer wrestlers if they don't perform the way posters want them to. They even make shit out of the broadcasting team. Maybe what posters should do is quit kissing your butt and quit acting like your God almighty.

No, not God.
However, Chief, I'd like a new red fire truck for Christmas. I've been mostly good this year. I've even put up with posters who think we're way too tough when our more experienced wrestlers don't harder try to win.

I can get you some little plastic soldiers that fell off a truck.

Yea...the guy basically agrees with my post and then goes on to dump on me. Not Sure is an apt name.

I don’t understand this post, did I miss something? How exactly do you make shit out of the broadcasting team?

I think someone somewhere in this thread (or another) took a weak shot at A. Meyer who was on the call for the dual.
