Illinois play by play...

Not sure if Iowa or this board is more pathetic tonight. Pretty close

This. We wrestled like hot garbage today, no doubt. Our guys looked tired, almost as if we trained through this meet. However, this is what a down year looks like. Illinois came in with a plan...keep it close against our good guys and it worked. This Illinois team is not that much better than Rider. From head to toe, we looked good against Rider and looked just as bad tonight. This is how the season is going to go...up and down with a lot of development and guys learning about themselves. IMO, this is a try out for next year. Can a guy like Young take his lumps and come back in the Midlands? What's going to happen at 41? It sucks, but this is what being young and human looks like. I am willing to accept it this year if it means a healthy Lee and Warner next year.

In my years of watching the Hawks, and maybe forever, the lightweights have set the tone and it has been contagious to the rest of the team. There have been exceptions, obviously.

The Hawks won't have that luxury this season if predictions about Lee redshirting are accurate. If the Hawks find themselves down 6/7/8/10-0 by 141... it's gonna be a VERY long year. This might be the year to draw for starting weight all season long.

Even though he's not great and not here yet, Nelson is is an out of control, spastic animal. Can't wait for that energy on this team. Attack wrestling!!!

It's a down year, let it fly and have a blast. There's nothing to lose. 8th place in the NCAAs is the same as 2nd to me.

Souci is not drinking again because that is some pretty sane advice.

Don’t be negative on the board Sans, it hurts the program. :) I agree, nothing to lose, let the fur fly. That’s why it’s frustrating to have what? 9 takedowns in the meet and have our studs eke out wins.

I don't think I was being negative on the program NOW. However, I feel I was one of the first to call out TnT on recruiting and their hardcore motivations many years ago. I like the direction now. And, I say "we" when referring to Iowa wrestling because sadly, I live and die with Iowa wrestling.

Did you feel I was directing that at you?

Some posts remind me of the basketball apologists. Hoops and wrestling should be better than this.

I just got back from the meet, and I have to say that was the worst Hawkeye team wrestling I've seen
in all my years of watching them. They wrestled flat, with no heart, no fire, and no sense of urgency. The coaching staff even looked asleep at times. Thank God for Stoll, or we would have lost that meet. We had 9 freaking take downs the whole meet, 9. This isn't Iowa style wrestling. Tom better light afire under their a**. It was a very frustrating meet.

At the pre meet social Matt McDonough made a great comment.
He's tired of hearing that it's a "down year". He said it's bull crap and that we won 9 championships in a row without having a down year.

I personally think if by us saying it's a "down year", we don't expect much from our wrestlers and team and that's just the effort the wrestlers will give us thinking that way.

1. That was dismal. Totally pathetic. (Thanks, Stoll, for actually salvaging the win.)

2. To top it off, Terry almost lost the dual by inserting himself into the action. WTF?? Are you 5 f-ing years old?? He owes the fans an apology and should be reprimanded by Tom and Barta. Un-f-ing-believable display of poor judgment.

3. Ironside is 100% right to be pissed. I see no one is bashing him for being a negative influence on recruiting. Put the blame where the blame lies.

I'm still of the opinion that Downey is a must-have, and wrestling Lee this year is an almost-have if we don't want this to be the worst Iowa season in modern history.

Stock down = Tom Brands. And I'm pretty much just echoing Ironside, so spare me the fair-weather fan comments.

I wonder what McD would say after watching tonight's meet?

Terry needs to get some control or watch from the stands.

No not at all. I was trying to be funny because I thought you were posting before about negative posting on recruiting was hurting recruiting. No need to meet me on the bridge yet.

Question, reading some of the comments about Ironside...has he been unhappy with Brands for awhile or was the heavy criticism more of the product that was on the mat tonight?

Iowa had 9 takedowns tonight. Yikes
You are absolutely right very very flat and not acceptable. However, in three matches the Illinois wrestlers never even attempted a shot. At least both bowman and young wrestled and didn’t block off and back up for 7 minutes. If young had just held on when he was in instead of trying to score it very well may not have been a tech. Anyway you look at it we need to be more aggressive and push the pace. Possiblly the worst grade all night should have gone to the official who allowed things to “not” happen. He only called the fall after Stoll had pinned him for the third or fourth time. Illinois did what they set out to do, keep it close and we did nothing to prevent them from doing just that. Allowing a little less running would have helped in a few matches, however.

Just tonight. If someone ever heard Ironside say anything bad about Tom disclose it now. Never happened.

Ok so just cause I don’t know the rules on situations like that but could the ref have stopped the match when terry was poking him in the back or is it just loss of a team point?

I don't know who said it up in previous posts but hammering a RS Freshman for getting TF'd by Martinez is kind of stupid...especially after he had a decent showing against #4 plus he didn't wrestle not to get majored or TF'd. Look at it this way, ISU's most promising recruit (Storr) got pinned by Meredith from Wyoming in the first period w/o breaking a sweat. LIzak got beat by a freshman. Anthony Valencia got beat by Wanzek and Massa got beat by Wick. A whole host of other upsets and Rutgers got beat by Lock Haven. If you aren't elite, you are not safe. We are not this year with six new starters in the line up.

It's going to be a long frustrating season for both basketball and wrestling this year. Go Hawks!!!

As a former wrestler, we don't intermingle basketball talk with wrestling. It's a thing.

However, the similarities are there. They're both in a down year and hoping the new recruits take them somewhere. The somewheres are galaxies apart.

What Matt said has no relevancy to your opinion.

Did you wrestle? If your entire team sucked and you did not, would you be ok with losing your matches because it was a down year for your team? Hell no you wouldn't.

These men didn't work their asses off since they were five y/o and travel every weekend to take days off because the fans don't expect much. They're hammers, they never want to lose. That's how they got here.

not really. I don't remember BS being aggressive from the opening whistle

Are you dumb? Nm, you wouldn't know.

Well, I remember him moving his feet and getting after it. He's a defensive wrestler that doesn't mind winning 6-5. I thought he looked aggressive that night. I think it went double overtime, goofball. You don't watch shit.

I watched the first half of the meet before I had to leave, so I didn't get to see the upper weights. It was just disheartening to see a team compete the way they did. The thing that I don't get is the TNT are supposed to be guys that preach "let it fly" and I see the exact opposite. What is causing these guys to clam up the way they did? Are TNT so intense that there is fear of failure?

Kemerer performance was the most surprising since he normally seems aggressive. It is one thing to have a down match/year but it would be nice to see some gutty performances even if they end up losing.

I can give Young a pass as well because IMart when on his game can make even the best of wrestlers look pretty pedestrian.

And when I listen to the meet instead of watch, hard to give a real good opinion of individual performances. That said, Mark Ironside isn't in the camp that thinks Iowa is allowed to have a down year. He always expects effort, and he clearly wasn't seeing it. And to his credit, he was complimentary to some of the Illini wrestlers when they pulled off a nice technique or scrambled well out of a tough situation.

Illinois isn't a bad team, and this Iowa team isn't good by Iowa standards, but you would still expect a win without your HWT. being forced to get a pin to salvage this dual. We got a gift, plain and simple.

This is without question a year for Iowa to draw to see where the meet starts. We knew it was going to be a taxing year, and early on it appears its going to be worse than originally thought. But its one dual, so hopefully it's an aberration. We shall see I guess.

Ok, but saying we aren’t wrestling good today because we are saving it for March is a flat out crazy excuse. Makes no sense. Should IMar wrestle bad tonight so he can do better in March? Should Zain do crappy in his next match so he wrestles better in March? What you said makes no sense.
Yeah. I did not take the time to word my thoughts correctly. Not going to try to do it now. Lets just say it came out way differently that I intended.

Understand. Happens to me all the time—at home, work, and online. I am slowly getting better in my old age.

If you keep making sense when you speak, I am going to look like even more of an idiot, when I speak. :)

I don't think TnT teach let it fly. I think they teach go hard, pursue the guy, move forward, hand fight, wear him out and never quit. To me "letting it fly" is a guy who shoots low singles, gets in scrambles, tries a throw, throws cradles and legs and rolls around on top.
It is hard to control your opponent, hand fight, move forward and let it fly at the same time. Or I am misunderstanding what you were trying to say.

That type of performance happens to all teams every year. It happens to PSU and it’ll happen again this year. There will be a match where a lackluster performance will have some over on BWI jumping off ledges and saying no chance we beat tOSU for the title.

I think a lot of it’s by design. I think coaches pick weeks where they beat down their boys all week in practice....wear them down and then finish it off by seeing how they work through the adversity. I think it helps prime them for a run at the end of the year. I think the Brands are great coaches so in my opinion some calling for their heads could very well be mistaking “not having his kids ready” for good coaching.
