Hayden Fry's post-game wardrobe change in 1982 altered the Iowa-Minnesota football rivalry.

Since that moment, the #Hawkeyes are 25-11 against the #Gophers in the battle for the iconic Floyd of Rosedale trophy.

Can you, in your wildest imagination, conceive of KF doing anything like that? Of course not. John Hayden Fry was a character as well as a great football coach, and that Minnesota press conference outfit was an all-time classic. I know I'll never forget it. Hayden understood that he had to change the culture at Iowa, and that Minnesota outfit was one way he did it. He was a master of psychology, and just about everything he did and said was for a reason. I miss those days.

Yes, he was a great coach! And yet many of his players talk about the culture change Kirk Ferentz had to make his first few yrs because Hayden had lost the team the last few years! And look at the all the accomplishments of both - and the almost identical record! You should enjoy Kirk like you did Hayden - both are great!!

The Hawks won the game 21-16 on a Statue of Liberty play from Chuck Long to Eddie Phillips. Big interceptions by James Erb, Keith Hunter, Ron Hawley and Nate Creer. Our first game in the Dome. Lots of fun and lots of Schmidt beer on tap.

He was just different than Kirk. Doesn't mean better or worse. Look at Tom Landry or Chuck Noll, etc. Pretty tight laced dudes and excellent football coaches.

If you have not done so previously, pick up a copy of Hayden's book; A High Porch Picnic. A great read and full of amusing stories. You might also be surprised to learn how many famous people Hayden knew during his lifetime. A must read for all Hawkeye fans.

Definitely. Guys "our age" often take for granted that millennials understand the Hayden story. It happened 20-40 years ago.

He was much more than an Xs and Os football coach. The guy was a leader, a character, a networker ...he'd have been successful in any business.
