Iowa Baseball @ Rutgers

Iowa blows a 7-1 lead and loses 8-7 in the 8th and 9th. This one will sting a lot. A 3-1 weekend is nice, but 4-0 would’ve been great. Kind of speaks to why we can’t have nice things. Nedved nor Leonard could slam the door on Rutgers in the 8th and 9th.

Heller needs pitching. No lead is safe

Nedved has been extremely solid this year. Today slipped away from him. I'm not sure what's going on with Leonard but it is eminently frustrating. That being written . . . Davitt was good today, Hoffman followed with strong innings. Shame on me but I felt like this one was "in the bag" after Iowa was up 6 and only needed to get 6 more outs.

But . . . let's face it . . . Iowa stole one on Friday that they likely didn't deserve and Rutgers returned the favor today.

Hopefully it will serve as a reminder that you can't take your foot off the gas. Big weekend of baseball coming up. Maryland took this weekend's series from OSU and Northwestern (even though they only took 1 of 3) played Indiana tough. Iowa needs to take 3 of the upcoming 4 games and it will not be an easy task . . . cannot - under any circumstances - get caught looking ahead to the Indiana series.

I agree on 3-1, if you’re going to drop one then hope it’s to Maryland. The Terps are very dangerous offensive and have been playing much better than the first two games Iowa faced them. I’m frustrated by Leonard’s woes too. It’s like if the save or tight game is on the line then he can’t get outs, he was fine yesterday in the 8-1 game.

Todays loss was big to me for a couple reasons. You win and you gain 29 RPI points and you are at 35-36. The loss and you lose 51 points. Looks like they will be at 42-44. Purdue is playing Illinois today and tomorrow. Purdue wins would gain around 25-30 points while losing would lose 15 or so. A split would be a wash.

My point is this, there are games coming up where even if Iowa sweeps they will lose spots in the RPI. I don’t want to be 27-17 with a 68 RPI and hope the committee factors in other things.

Back in the Banks era and the weekend series were all four games, game 4 could get interesting because almost no one had enough quality pitching to cover those :)

The good old seven inning games on Saturday. Four game series lasted all the way up through some of the Dahm years. You get swept and it took weeks to make it up. Well, Dahm coached teams never made it up.

In sports, anything can happen.

And do you trust Heller in the decisions he makes? I do.

Today was just a bad loss. Bad losses happen in every sport.

You simply move on to the next game, the next series.
