Iowa Commit Ben VanSumeren offered by Michigan

Why don't we all just chill and wait to see how this MI recruitment and his eventual signing plays out.

We don't know what's going on, but posters are saying "pull the offer", "if we get Honas who cares", "he gone", etc.

Speaking for myself, I hope we do get him, so now I wait to see if we do. That's about it and all we can do.

Yes I don't get the vitriol. He's from Michigan, Michigan obviously had other priorities. They didn't get those guys, so they move to him. He now has a choice to make. Go to his likely dream school or go to a school he has a good relationship with. Recruiting is a tough game.

If Iowa didn't offer Jewell late in the game, he was going to Luther or Wartburg or wherever. It happens. Iowa thought he was good enough to offer, so I hope he comes. If he doesn't, we move on.

so we are allowed to offer other schools commits, but no one is allowed to offer ours? cmon now....
That is not the reason at all, I have been on recruiting trips with my players and they will tell them what ever they want to hear......first hand experience and we had a kid sign at Western Michigan, my role as a coach in high school is to not try to nudge a kid to sign one way or another- otherwise he would have signed with Miami of Ohio if I had a say. As I said early I do not blame the kid one way or another, I also have no problem with the late offer. I do have a problem with what the coaches are telling these kids (or probably telling them from my experience) I actually didn't have a problem with Campbell when he was at Toledo, seemed a little creepy to me but straight shooter

It’s not that. It’s Iowa’s rule against taking an official visits to other schools when committed to Iowa and what happened with the Texas recruits.

michigan bound, clearly. Ben and his HS coach both believed he belongs on the offensive side of the ball and thats where michigan "wants" him. He gone, no big loss for Iowa here.

I would have the same rule. In fact the Iowa coaches stress to the players to not commit if they are not ready too...players know the rule and if they really wanted to go to Iowa they would abide....we want players that want to be here, simple as that

Well if he does that, as his coach says here, then not solid, nor part of Iowa's class anymore I'm sure.

Garber coach Jake Coquillard confirmed that VanSumeren plans to take an official visit to Michigan this weekend.

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2017/12/jim_harbaugh_calls_with_michig.html
“It’s been a pretty crazy morning,” Coquillard said. “I talked to (UM assistant) Jay Harbaugh for about a half hour and Jim Harbaugh for about a half hour… They think they found the right guy and they want him to take a look and see how he likes it.”

Jim's hired his son!? WTF!
Nepotism! Should not be allowed!

Yes I don't see what the big deal is here. Iowa could do away with its policy of not "allowing" official visits if a player is committed, but it wouldn't really change how things work. If a player is taking an official visit to another school while committed to the first school, is the player really committed? At that point, the first school has to treat the player like he's not committed. Better to find out now than the day before signing day.

I'm aware of that.
With that said, what is the difference between official and unofficial?

then why would he commit somewhere he'd be playing D?

Harbaugh's honey moon period is over....this happens all the time. Right now it is the Fleck and Campbell boner fest, Frost is newly added to the boner fest. After actually results things will be back to complaining and misery. Hell there are OSU fans who want to get rid of Meyer, like are you freaking kidding me! Every fan base wants a new shiney toy and when that toy is no longer new....they want another one.

Boner fest?

Please, Karan Higdon said the same thing. I don't believe any recruit is coming to Iowa till they sign their LOI.

Yep.

I never get excited about recruiting until I see the list of signed players. Then of course, if there's no NCAA clearinghouse issues or whatever it is called. Then grades, injuries, etc.

So many different wtf's can happen in this. I guess Willie Guy and Blake Larson kinda jaded me to it all - so I tend to fall in with the "until I see him play for Iowa" line of thinking with recruits.

from the linked article, it does not look good:

University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh contacted the Essexville Garber football star Thursday morning, offering him a scholarship to join the Wolverines for the next four seasons.

Garber coach Jake Coquillard confirmed that VanSumeren plans to take an official visit to Michigan this weekend.

“It’s been a pretty crazy morning,” Coquillard said. “I talked to (UM assistant) Jay Harbaugh for about a half hour and Jim Harbaugh for about a half hour… They think they found the right guy and they want him to take a look and see how he likes it.”

The most noteworthy part of the Michigan offer – other than coming from a high-profile, home-state school 97 miles down the road – is that Harbaugh said he plans to use VanSumeren as an H-back, fullback or off-the-line tight end. VanSumeren said Iowa had him slotted as a linebacker.

“In talking to Coach Harbaugh, I said ‘Coach, what were we missing in this whole process? Because we think he is an offensive kid.’ And he said ‘We think he is, too.’

“They think he would be a solid outside linebacker, but he could be so much more on the offensive side. That’s pretty exciting.

Less than a week before signing day, however, VanSumeren was given something new to consider as Michigan became a late joiner to the game.

“Ben was honest with them and said he was a little miffed he hadn’t heard from them,” Coquillard said. “Harbaugh owned up to it. He said ‘We messed up,’ and was very gracious about it.

“He said now they found him and they love him.”

His high school head football coach is a douche bag and you can obviously tell he is in the kids ear about things......hope you make the right decision bc you will probably be graduating Mich. with a completely different staff. All good though, we will just continue to win on the field against them

The most exciting thing that could happen is he suddenly turn into a four-star here in a week or so that would send the board into a tizzy LOL

And it wouldn't be hard to happen being he is a 5.7! Now just for review for the guys that are constantly worried about "rankings" I believe this kid started as a 5.3 or 5.4, 2-star. Iowa gets interested, other teams got interested, and suddenly a couple months later he's a 5.7, 3-star and then Michigan offers. Everyone needs to just trust that the coaching staff knows how to sign talent!

We've taken kids from other teams and lost kids to other teams. I think the thing that is the most flattering is Iowa continues over and over and over to find Miss-ranked or overlooked talent.

That HS coach sounds like a complete toolbag. He says “coach what are they missing?” They aren’t missing anything and there’s a reason you’re coaching high school and the Iowa coaches are in the Big Ten.

how many times has KF suggested position changes where the guy ends up in the NFL? KF looks at a guy and knows where he should be playing.

the most recent example is the QB who dismissed KF's suggestion to move to TE; he transfers to Arkansas, plays TE there, and is now playing TE in the NFL

Good Lord. I hope Harbaugh didn’t get too close to that high school coach. Jim will be pregnant faster than a spring rabbit.

The player says he’s solidly committed to Iowa. The HS coach says he’s going to visit Michigan officially and suggests Iowa is missing something. Huh? Iowa has enough interest to offer 10/5 while UM misses on other players and decides offer a week before signing day. Who’s missing something?

I pretty much agree with your premise, but I believe Derby was moved to linebacker, not tight end.

I believe Mr Derby was asked to move to LB'er not TE, however your way makes it sound better.

If B-VS switches at this point, after all the love, dedication and loyalty they have showed him and he has stated he is dedicated all the same then GOOD F*ing riddance. His parents must be (so proud)!
BTW he was a marginal recruit either way at best.
He is literally a fall back recruit to them in the truest sense. A plan C. If BVS takes the bait he's not a bright kid. UM is on the verge of total averageism.
With or w/o him the program will survive.

Yep, couldn't agree more

NFL jobs will start opening up soon..let the JH rumors begin..hope they get their asses handed to them in their bowl game

Official I believe is the school paying for expenses. and each school is allocated only a certain number of official visits per year. But could be wrong on that.

Jim and Jay Hardblow expected in Essexville this morning to meet with BVS. Sure hope they bungle the meeting in overwhelming fashion.

Sometimes recruits use commits as insurance until they get their dream offer. This really seems like one of those cases because otherwise it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for him to switch.

You know his HS coach?

Loyalty is so far down on the current list of important character traits. This doesn't surprise me at all. Seems like the only commits we get that are locks to sign are the legacy kids.
