Iowa Commit Ben VanSumeren offered by Michigan

I agree. I just get a bad feeling there will be a lot of pressure by his family and friends to stay in state and go to Michigan

You can't blame a kid for considering the home state school, which happens to be where Mom graduated from college. Similar to a kid from Iowa that was committed to Minnesota for instance and gets an 11th hour offer from Iowa, you couldn't blame the kid for considering it. I suspect as long as the kid communicated with the Iowa staff and was upfront and honest, he will still have a scholarship available even if he visits Michigan this weekend. I think back to Drew Ott and Noah Fant, both players visited Nebraska late in the process and maintained their ability to sign with Iowa.

I know KF plays his hand pretty cool but I have a feeling stuff like this royally miffs Brian and probably KF. I hope we throat throttle them every chance we get.

BVS wouldn't see the field for quite awhile at te for Iowa. Room at lber that's where he's needed at Iowa. If he wants to play offense Michigan might be a good choice.

Not nearly as pathetic as condescending message board guy. watch out for low branches while you are riding around on that high horse.

no hate for Meatchicken is irrational!!

I can understand intense hatred for Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa State, or Wisconsin. Hell, I could even understand such hatred for Illinois. But why Michigan? Because they are a historically successful program? So you should also hate Ohio State, Alabama, Notre Dame, Florida State, Oklahoma, etc. If you are going to hate every team that is good, you are going to have A LOT of pent up hatred.

Because it’s Michigan and they think they’re better than everyone else and can swoop in last minute and steal recruits. Oh and Jim Harbaugh enough said.

Have you ever interacted with their fan base, alums, etc............if you have not, good for you....but their arrogance is the reason

Uh... yeah. Most do dislike those teams as well. Same reason a lot of people dislike the Yankees, RedSox, Patriots, Lakers, or any other team that wins a lot. Shocking, I know. I'd personally love to see every blueblood program in the county have a few decades of suck like Iowa had in the 60's - 70's, and I don't think I'm alone there.

Lighten up Francis.

We hate everyone in the Big Ten. Especially Purdue.

I pretty much agree with your premise, but I believe Derby was moved to linebacker, not tight end.
I thought DE, but it's a moot point. He went to Juco, played QB, transfers to Arkansas, and ends up playing TE. Now he's playing for the world champs as a TE. Heck of a journey, I'm sure there will be a book some day.

Official I believe is the school paying for expenses. and each school is allocated only a certain number of official visits per year. But could be wrong on that.
That's what I thought.
If so, I don't like the rule at all!
If you're rich and your parents want to pay then we welcome you to visit all the schools you'd like. If you're not....you have no choice to visit other schools.
I think that is kinda bullshit personally.
No wonder so many of the in home photos seem to show recruits with money! lol

Iowa may have said, us or visit them and you’re gone.
I'm sure that the Hawks did just that.

Furthermore, I think that it is important to recognize that Iowa may have offered him at OLB. However, the fact of the matter remains that Noah Fant probably will have a NFL decision to make after the 2018 season. Consequently, that should/could open up opportunity for young TEs to push for action for the Hawks. Consequently, I could easily see VanSumeren initially redshirting and working at OLB ... however, then sliding over to TE during the spring of '19.

Thus, at Iowa, he could be a leading candidate for action at positions where Iowa regularly produces NFLers.

On top of that ... the kid purports morals, religious convictions and all that ... and that meshes exceedingly well with Iowa and Iowa's staff.

i'm still confused by this!
if a non official visit is allowed and simply means the player pays for the trip.....how hard is it for them to fill the tank and drive to mi? this would be allowed, correct?

The guy I'm wondering about is Beyer. He is listed at TE but could he play WR. People on here who have seen him play say not as fast as Fant but better hands.

Everyone needs to lighten up. If the man grew up rooting for Michigan, he probably has some loyalty. His mother went to school there. Playing closer to home gives his family and friends more opportunity to watch him play. This is important to most people that are of high character and family-oriented.

He caught 80 passes for over 1000 yards in his senior year. He obviously is talented enough to play the H back spot, and that is probably why "Jump in the Pool" Harbaugh offered him that spot. I would assume he is looking at rosters and seeing where he has the greatest chance of playing. Every high school kid thinks and wants to play in the NFL to make the big money. This is where Iowa may have an advantage. I am guessing that linebackers make more money than H backs in the NFL and that there are more opportunities for linebackers.

So the young man has a tough decision to make. I am sure he has some strong feelings towards Iowa also, seeing that he has been rooting for us for the last six months. I wish him the best luck in whatever he decides.

Not at all my experience. In my four trips to Ann Arbor from 97-2010 I think I had one single incident of soneone knocking Iowa....everyone else was very respectful, friendly and generally fun to be around. And we tailgated all day each time. They asked a lot of questions about Iowa that led to good fball convos. Granted, I was in a group that didnt act like jackasses but i found that each time the Mich fans were as good as anywhere in the bten i have visited.

There are teams I really hate losing to above others like Wiscy and Nebraska but the only team I truly hate is the team from Ohio. F them....

I certainly do not feel your disdain for OSU (not that I like them or anything) however; I am not going to go on a tangent because I do not agree with your disdain or share your opinion..... I hate Nebby, NW, and Michigan in the big ten (the most anyhow-I hate them all TBH)

You have to realize that a man's word ought to mean something .... that is, unless he's going to flip to Iowa! :)

There is a lot of irrational hate for Michigan amongst some Iowa fans. Pretty pathetic, really.

Adrain Arrington, Amarah Darboh, Oliver Martin, Delano Hill, Karan Higdon.... of course I had no control over their choice but it sure didn’t make me love Michigan... & Michigan’s fan base is right up there with Nebraska as far as how annoying they are and how great they think they still are.. I pretty much pull for whoever their opponents are.. I just can’t help it. They do have a great history of winning thou, can’t take that away from them.. key word, HISTORY..

The latest on Harbaugh mania at his high school today.

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2017/12/jim_harbaugh_visit_has_garber.html

Not coincidently, Garber principal Tim Hoffman showed up at school wearing Maize and Blue attire.

“The students were very excited to see Coach Harbaugh,” Hoffman said. “He interacted with them, and took time to talk to the staff… it was a very cool experience.

“I was as excited as anybody.”

VanSumeren was offered an opportunity to pay an official visit to Michigan this weekend, although he hasn’t confirmed he will accept. Garber coach Jake Coquillard said Thursday that VanSumeren was still committed to Iowa but has more options to weigh prior to his official signing.

Good lord. That has to be a lot of pressure on the kid. The principal and coach are waiving the maize and blue flag and I am sure the student body was asking Ben if he was flipping. Hopefully he takes his time and makes a decision for himself.

Didn’t Delano Hill flip late in the process to Michigan resulting in us offering a little known db called Desmond King?? Who knows what will happen or how it will work out for the player and the teams. There’s not a can’t miss recruit...except for Ayo Sabo!!!

Yep, except it was Brady Hoke doing the flipping.. but I’m sure when Brady Hoke walked into Cass Tech Highschool in Detroit he didn’t get the same star struck response from the school like when Jim H walked into Garber Highschool in Essexvill,Mi

Let's not forget one other factor.

The young men in this photo will impact him as well. And I'd love to know what interaction there is with them.

So here's my current take:
  • If it's a good idea today, it will be a good idea tomorrow. Once this young man lets the dust and excitement from the school visit settle down, he'll dwell on doing the right thing.
  • He loves Kirk Ferentz.
  • Just a hunch, but I'd guess he loves Doyle just as much.
  • Ben knows Iowa is a great development school that will help him in his efforts to reach his goals.
  • Sure, mom is a Michigan girl. But don't put too much stock in this. The best parents want their kids to make choices that are best for their children, not themselves.
  • We've all had good friends who tried to manipulate us. But in the end, we pretty much all do what we deem to be best for ourselves. And those of us on HR now our staff does their best to find good fits. Which means that Iowa must fit the student athlete as much as the athlete fits Iowa.
  • Ben based his decision on many factors and emotion was not his primary factor. Had this been the case, he would likely have elected to walked on at Michigan. Think about that.
This situation needs a little cooling down for Ben and his folks. If he was not a high character guy Kirk would not have offered.

I don't think Ben will break his word. I think Ben will end up at Iowa. I'd love to get @rivercityjazzman 's view.

Man I don't miss recruiting..... Give the kid a break, most of his family/Coaches/Friends are likely Michigan fans and the kid is likely feeling a ton of pressure from them. In my dated and limited experience with this, it is usually more of the family than the player.

The part about Michigan "finding him late" is a complete joke, something happened and now they are interested in him.
FWIW Ben's mother is a Michigan grad. Michigan just missed on a 3rd TE that will sign with Notre Dame. The Bay City coach and Ben both thought he had more upside playing HB or TE than LB.
Also, Ben is now at Michigan on an official visit. Recruiting, all teams win some and lose some, you just never know.
