Iowa Commit Ben VanSumeren offered by Michigan

The school AD, Ben, Jay Harbaugh, and Jim Harbaugh

VanSumeren made a verbal commitment to the University of Iowa on Nov. 10 and planned to sign his national letter of intent Dec. 20. The Michigan offer came at a late stage in the process, but Harbaugh and his staff made it clear they covet VanSumeren.

“They want him, they want him bad,” Schwartz said. “And they prioritized that by driving up in the snow this morning.”

---------------------------
Oh that is why it took him 2 years to make the very short drive! Guess they were just playing hard to get....

FWIW Ben's mother is a Michigan grad. Michigan just missed on a 3rd TE that will sign with Notre Dame. The Bay City coach and Ben both thought he had more upside playing HB or TE than LB.
Also, Ben is now at Michigan on an official visit. Recruiting, all teams win some and lose some, you just never know.

LOL. I know. In the 86 or 87, we were recruiting a RB named A. Hill (6-3, 185) out of a CC somewhere in Iowa. Anyway, the kids was all in before the game, couldn't be more excited to play for Iowa... Michigan offed him a ride right after the game.... he walks up to us " I'm going to Michigan" and walks away... 3 days later, Michigan pulled the offer.

haha. Have you seen how Brian Kelly is recruiting these days? The entire Notre Dame fan base wants him fired and yet he's pulling in kids right and left. Meanwhile, UM is purportedly discussing a lifetime contract with Harbaugh.
They can discuss whatever contract they want. That doesn't mean he'll have to stay, or that they'll have to keep him. But hey, what do I know. Maybe Michigan has finally made peace with being the third or fourth best team in their own division. Good for them. Have them have a beer with Nebraska, and tell them how its done.......;)

So here's my current take:
  • If it's a good idea today, it will be a good idea tomorrow. Once this young man lets the dust and excitement from the school visit settle down, he'll dwell on doing the right thing.
  • He loves Kirk Ferentz.
  • Just a hunch, but I'd guess he loves Doyle just as much.
  • Ben knows Iowa is a great development school that will help him in his efforts to reach his goals.
  • Sure, mom is a Michigan girl. But don't put too much stock in this. The best parents want their kids to make choices that are best for their children, not themselves.
  • We've all had good friends who tried to manipulate us. But in the end, we pretty much all do what we deem to be best for ourselves. And those of us on HR now our staff does their best to find good fits. Which means that Iowa must fit the student athlete as much as the athlete fits Iowa.
  • Ben based his decision on many factors and emotion was not his primary factor. Had this been the case, he would likely have elected to walked on at Michigan. Think about that.
This situation needs a little cooling down for Ben and his folks. If he was not a high character guy Kirk would not have offered.

I don't think Ben will break his word. I think Ben will end up at Iowa. I'd love to get @rivercityjazzman 's view.
Wish I had as much faith as you do

Well unless something has changed that we aren't aware of, it is a KF rule that once you commit you can't take visits elsewhere, so I would assume they pulled his offer. Iowa better get on some LB's as they only took one last year and they only have one this, don't we?

Michigan is like Kentucky in basketball; they show little if no interest in a prospect and then think they can just swoop in at the last second and flip whoever they want

I wonder if he said his word is stronger than oak!

My Dad always taught me you spend your entire life building up your credibility and integrity so don't let it be destroyed in a matter of seconds by doing something you shouldn't or by going back on your word.

I say go get the linebacker that is teammates with Honas that someone mentioned earlier in this thread.

But his character was fine when he flipped to Iowa earlier?

It sucks, but I don't blame the kid. If that was me growing up and my best offer was Michigan State I would have gladly accepted. If Iowa had come calling, even just before signing day, I would have at least visited and probably flipped at the drop of the hat. He's a kid, he needs to do what he thinks is best, whether that's us or not.

i thought that was "official visits" and I thought official means paid by the school
i bet the kid could come up with the cash for a few gallons of gas ;)

Kirk has always said that they take these visits on a case by case basis. It doesn't automatically get your offer pulled. Each situation is handled individually because they all are different. A lot of it depends on the communication with the Recruit.

He decommitted from WMU because Fleck was no longer the coach and with a coaching change, a player should be able to reconsider his choice of schools.
What about all of the other players that have switched to us over the years without a coaching change? I don’t like how it’s looking for this kid, but I thought we all decided how stupid it is to start calling a player’s character, commitment, honor... whatever, into question because they decide to go to school somewhere else.

Jeezus dudes. If he flips to UM so f*ing what!? He is a descent recruit but if so also a flake. “” been solid with Iowa “” type kid that flips at the chance to chase a pipe dream. He’s a fall-back recruit to UM. Literally a scrub in their recruiting scenario. Let the kid go already. It’s not like we’re loosing Tim Dwight for Gods sake. He’s ~ barely a 3 Star!

Some people are far too sour grapes over this situation. All of you know, for example, that if ISU was your beat offer you would take it. If Iowa came calling a week before signing.... you too would flip.

Let' hope Iowa can find a suitable replacement in the closing days.

I hope he did rescind the offer. They are just kids excuse is worthless. It’s gutless behavior to commit to anything and then change mind despite age. A good reason why we have so many issues nationally. How about trying this on for size kid.....honor your word or dont commit in the first place. Loser.

Not at all verified fyi. A buddy who is a big time Booster ( think Alou Kieta ) told me this. Could absolutely be wrong but I trust him. The jyst is if he visits UM then its off the table.

Yes I really hate to see this happen but give the kid a break. It is his home state school, his mom‘s alma mater (if true), and I’m sure he grew up a Wolverine fan as a kid. If I was in high school and had excepted an offer to Minnesota because Iowa hadn’t offered me and didn’t look like they were going to but then got a last minute offer from Iowa? I’d flip pretty easily.

I’m sure he’s having a really hard time figuring out what he should do at the situation. There’s probably a pretty good chance this is the only offer that would make him waiver on his decision to Iowa at all. Let the poor kid check out his home state school and see where the cards fall.

So UM had accepted 3rd or 4th place in the East. LOL

The reason we have so many issues nationally is ass-backwards old fogies like you. College football is a multi-billion dollar industry and the players aren’t getting a dime of it. If a kid wants to make a decision that is best for HIS future, he should. Doesn’t matter if you like it or not.

Nah. It's dependent millennials, like yourself, who haven' t the slightest clue about commitment because your mommy and/or daddy helicoptered in to find you a safe space. I could care less where this kid goes. Don't commit if you don't mean it. Not that hard of a concept really. Even for the entitled.

Right, it’s the Millennials’ fault. Everything is these days with you snowflakes. If you want to blame someone else, look in the mirror at the shitty job your generation did raising its kids. Maybe the skyrocketing divorce rate over the past 60 years has something to do with kids’ perception of commitment.

Give your word, break it. give your word, break it, Blame it on your parents, Always someone else's fault! These types of decisions are not the parents but the kids, NOT a good track record. I hope the young man does come to Iowa but at some time he will have to stand on his own and own his decisions. I hope he does well.

They already have two TE commits. He'll be turned into a FB and throw away his chance to be drafted. I love fullbacks but that's the way the game is played now. Good luck to him.
