Iowa got LUCKY!

It’s the truth: Iowa was lucky to get this win. The Hawks played without passion, without urgency. They were slow on decent, gave up far too many rebounds, missed too many FTs. They won, and I’m glad. But, there is no denying that Iowa played like like crap, got lucky, and won.

This was true of the starters, but you can't tell me Joe T and Nunge and Perkins and Murray and PMac and Ulis weren't out scrapping and hustling.

right.

After being on this board for years, I’m convinced if Iowa went 29-0 and won the BTC and NC, some would still be critical. Enjoy it folks. The Big Ten is tough. Michigan St and others have great players. Not every game will be a blowout.

Don't expect a blowout every game. Don't expect a win every game. Would just hope to see the little things that are within our team's control... make your FTs, show a little life on defense, hustle after loose balls, hit the boards hard, don't play out of control, don't make lazy passes... these are the reasons this team has been losing games this year.

I guess that’s the whole point. Why weren’t the starters playing with that same energy and urgency? If the starters played like they are capable of playing, then this ends up being an easy victory.

Or, some of the starters can't compete against athletic teams in this conference. Pretty easy to look like you're lackadaisical when the guy you're going up against can run circles around you.
Larry Bird was never an athletic phenom; he simply outworked and outsmarted his opponents. Hard work can overcome a lot of shortcomings.

Iowa did Not get lucky. OP could not be more wrong. Iowa won as a team. Period. The team’s record includes all players, not just the starters.

I will take an ugly win over an ugly loss any time
I seriously wonder how people saw this playing out any differently than we saw tonight?
Death, taxes and us struggling with Sparty seems a given . The way MSU plays defense always gives us fits . New year, same ole story. Hack and grab and have weasel Izzo cry about not getting any calls .

These starters (Frederick is hurt so he gets a pass for now) other than LG are playing like they do not give a s+++. They also appear to be lazy. Pretty pathetic effort by starting group with a couple of exceptions. They play like this against OSU they will lose by 20 points.
You hope riding the pine a bunch tonight got their attention!

If JorBo isn't making 3 pointers, he shouldn't be on the floor.

Well, in fairness, I think he's misused. He should not be running the point. He gets worn down by athletic guards who get in his grill. Bohannon needs to come in at the 2 and spot up. Let Joe T and Ulis break down their defender then either kick out to JBo, take it to the hole, or feed Garzilla.

Joe W and JBo have played like crap. The freshman are talented but lack experience. Fran needs to get them as many minutes as possible. If we are to make a deep run in the tourney. No way that I see the team winning the BIG now. Unless those 2 are stroking the 3's they hurt us on defense to justify playing them.

I disagree. Jbo has had his best moments with the ball in his hands. He seems out of rhythm this year when he's catching the ball to shoot. When he's running the court with the ball in his hands in transition and he just lets it rip he's been more consistent. I can't count the number of wide open corner 3's he's missed this year.

Agreed. Free throw shooting was the worse I’ve seen in awhile. And defense by starters was horrid. They got bailed out by our quick freshman who can play defense

They need to take it one step furter & start mixing Weezy or Jbo with these freshman. There is an answer for the rest of the year, they just need to find it because the starters have largely been figured out.

Good teams find a way to win when they are not playing their best. JBo did not play well most of the game, but when it counted the most he was 4 for 4 from the line (I don't think any of those 4 even touched the rim). Iowa was clutch at the end, while MSU choked. That is not being lucky.
Also, you are not lucky if you can call on 9th and 10th guys to help you win a game.

Maybe MSU was lucky because in almost any other game Iowa would not miss that many FTs.

Maybe there is something we can all agree on. After the last few games, you have to feel better about the potential for next year's team. Not final 4 caliber, but maybe not the big drop-off that may have been expected.

I agree hard work can overcome some portion of being not being athletic. However, Bird was 6'9 and strong. . He didn't have to guard smaller jitterbugs. JBO is playing a position that has the best/quickest athletes on the court.

It’ll be a big drop off next year. Unless Garza comes back.

No, but when you have the best scorer in the country and play a .500 team it shouldn't be that close.

You shouldn't consistently give up wide open 3s. There's no excuse for it.

I saw glimpses of next year tonight....and I really liked it.

Enjoy this team. We only have so many games of Luka Garza left.

OK, I'll say it. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

I'm glad we got this win tonight. I think MSU is finally getting their shit together and will be a handful from now on. I wish we didn't have to go there in 11 days. Just like you sometimes "break" a team, sometimes you "unbreak" them and they seem to find themselves.

I don’t think it’s about energy and urgency, I think it’s that they’re limited. Luka obviously played with urgency and energy tonight and I thought CMac was ok. After that, you had guys playing against, for all the things you can criticize, a really athletic MSU team playing for its season. Fredrick was obviously limited and JBo struggled to get shots off.

Nunge, Toussaint, Uhlis, Murray, PMac and Perkins showed a ton of energy and aggressiveness and countered MSU’s. So much positive out of this group. This might have been Patrick’s best game.
