Iowa Gov. Reynolds to pitch barring students from having cellphones in classrooms

And what a cop out by the union.

A spokeswoman for the Iowa State Education Association, the statewide union that represents public schoolteachers, said the union will not comment at this time since there is not yet a “specific proposal.”
It's not the teachers that will oppose the plan. Just wait until the parents find out they can't be in constant touch with their children.

Ankeny already does this. I agree with it mostly, but do not understand the point of not allowing them during lunch.

They don't need them in the hallways or at lunch. They should stay in the locker from arrival at the building to departure. That will go a long way in curbing the fight videos that get blasted all over the internet.

In multiple classes at my kids HS the teachers have a numbered hanging cloth shoe rack. Everyday the kids place their phone in their numbered pocket, they get extra credit. Essentially, if they do it everyday, they get a 10 bonus, bumping them up an entire letter grade. My son’s Geometry teacher said 25% of the kids still chose to keep their phones on them and it’s a constant distraction. Some of these kids end up failing the class and having to re-take it in the summer. These kids would pass if they simply put their phones away, but the teachers can’t care more than the student or their parents.

Because they just make Tik Tok videos or other posts that bully one another. No one, especially the parents, are taking the time to use them properly without it being a shitshow.

I am 100% for a ban. Hell I'd support a law that says kids under 18 can't have a smart phone.
Why would the union comment on something with no specific proposal? What's dumb is that is the first thing you thought of.

The devil is in the details: Why would the union not comment. You should see the scenes that are caused when phones are taken from an entitled kid and parent.

leaving phones in lockers is worse for a teacher than having the kids keep them. The locked cases are easily defeated.
You need to have a good plan in place and enforce it manically.

If the parents don't like it.....they can let the kid have their phone while being home schooled.
Seriously, I think many parents would be opposed for safety concerns. Every school shooting there are reports of children calling or texting their parents/law enforcement. I don't think kids need their phones at all times, but I do think they should be stored in the same room as the child.

Yeah, I am having a hard time envisioning any teacher opposing this. Like they really enjoy telling kids to put their phone away 40 times per class.

My kids high school has little bins right next to the door that the kids have to place their phones in as they enter the classroom. As they get to the upper classes, the teachers are a little more lenient. This seems to be a happy medium for most.

I could see that. Put it up front on the teachers desk.

PS
I have had kids put their phones in a case in the front of the room since 2012. The kids can see where it's at, just not hear it.
The only real problems i've had is:
1. Trumper parents: "I bought that phone you will not take it from my child". This isn't a political statement, just a statement of fact. I have had problems with 3 parents. ALL OF THEM have trump signs all over their house/yard and are highly agitated people whose MO is: You will not tell me what to do.....
2. When the younger grades told kids to keep them in their lockers: the logical problem, is they just lie and learn that if they lie they get rewarded. I make them go get them as a pass to get into the room. It's amazing how many kids tell me they are in their locker but when asked to go get them with me, they all the sudden forgot that they left them at home....

I don't have a problem with that:
With that being said.
We've had lock downs: both real and for practice. In all cases where the kids had their phones. Cell service was affected, in a negative way.

To be honest, I'm compromising by saying put them in the teachers desk. I prefer they not have them in the classroom

Oh come on...

The union could have put out a generic statement of support but since it's a Republican governor they won't comment. It's so tiring and predictable.

Not opposed on the surface, but details matter. I think it's reasonable that kids have to put their phone in a box (organizer, bin, whatever) at the front of the class.

Hell I graduated high school in '05. I didn't get a phone until I moved away to college. Even as a senior, if I needed a ride home from practice or work, I had to use a landline and call my parents landline.

What's tiring and predictable is you getting your panties in a bunch about the unions reasonable position without knowing specific details.

It's just a bridge too far for them to state that they would support efforts to reduce cell phone distractions in school. It's just too much for them...

Even worse, I am a parent,.. and I think a cell phone belongs in the student's locker.
That's great, but many parents feel differently.

Imagine trying to enforce this in an urban setting that already has poor behavior. Imagine being some small woman trying to remove the phone. the union has a responsibility to it's members to help keep them safe.
If you don't think there will be physical/verbal altercations over a phone being taken from a kid, then stay out of this conversation. I already know you are a simpleton hack, just don't be an ignorant one.

that is the worst possible place. There is no defense for it. You either have to check it in with the office at the beginning of the day or it gets put up front at the beginning of class.

Students not having a phone period is the way to go. There is no emergency at home a phone call to the office can't take care of. NONE.

Well then maybe those on your side should advocate for school resource officers instead of rejecting them.

What the hack do you mean, on my side. Take their phones.
You constantly make up stupid arguments and then don’t understand what people are talking about when they correct you.
Seriously you are just too stupid to even begin to understand the depths of your inability to understand logic.
A dumb F’ing take on a no comment leads you, an intellectual juvenile, to believe teachers want phones in school. You’re the gabby Douglass of mental gymnastics.
