Iowa Showing Interest in NDSU Transfer, Grant Nelson

Is Fran raving about him? I haven't seen that. Seems like the apologists are creating this narrative. I hope you guys are right because this team needs some talent. This isn't a good roster right now. Maybe some freshman step up but that's a lot to ask out of freshman.
kzoohawk in your opinion just what constitutes a good roster?

back to Nelson this is how feel about what he bring both good and bad.

the good a solid 6'11 scoring body in the paint, rebounder and physical presence in the middle.

the bad will he be a contributer or a selfish player just padding his stats to make him look more attractive to the NBA teams.
Like Garza?

get Nelson and the front court look like this,
7'0 JR Mulvey
6'11 SR Nelson
6'11 FR Freeman
6'9 SR Krikke
6'9 JR Brauns
6'9 FR Dembele
6'9 RSSR Patrick

that makes 7 players at 6'9 or taller to fill the front court, talk about fouls to give.
35 this season vs just 15 at most last season

Ok so IF this happens, that would be a bunch of guys and not enough minutes to push around. Redshirt Freeman?

They all don't play the same positions:

Center-- Krikke, Brauns, Mulvey, Freeman (Dembele can flex here if needed)
4-- Nelson, Dembele, (Krikke can flex here as well)
3--Patrick

Honestly in this scenario I could see the logic to RS Freeman--he also would still probably get some minutes. It also would probably squeeze any fringe scenarios of Riley getting actual playing time barring some massive improvements.

I think the more interesting thing is what it does to Patricks role. I think most here agree that Sandfort is in for a breakout season and should be getting 25-30 minutes/game. If Nelson were to come--he would also be in that 30+ minute/game category. That *should* reduce Pat's role to more of a bench guy similar to what he was towards the end of last season. That would certainly make this board have some lively discussions next fall/winter.

A player like Nelson, along with the returns and new players would make Iowa a top 25 lock with real conversation of challenging for the Big Ten title.

if he wanted to. it would not be bad idea. that or RS Dembele..also Pat is a 3 so these should have no impact on how many minutes Pat gets.

also with all these players there absolutely no reason for anybody to come close to 30 mpg.

After watching highlights without looking at stats im pretty shocked he isn't staying in the draft.

That probably means one of two things, either he didn't get a first round evaluation or he did hes been told he could be a lottery pick with some improvement.

I honestly think the only thing keeping him out of getting a first round grade is that his 3 point shooting % was only 27% last year. If he were to raise that in the 33-35% range I think more teams would be interested. Something that Fran's offense can certainly help.

If one or both of the two true PGs show they can play well against physical, top level competition, Iowa would have the potential to be very good.

I assumed his stats must not be great because the highlight reel shows nba type size and potential.

This list tells me Iowa is quite competitive in the NIL space, because I know Baylor and Alabama absolutely are.

Or perhaps NIL isn't a major factor with Nelson,.. Also, kid looks good in gold...

playing class 4A the top class in Illinois Harding being names the POY and Mr. Illinois BB. Ithink he has already proven his ability against top competition. he already faced a top 30 MSU Commit and won oh yeah that player is 6'0 160 lbs so he will be going up against him and not 6'9 or taller players in the D1 BB.

as far as Freeman he too played in the 4A class in Illinois and has played against top compition . its not like they were playing team from the local YMCA.

why are you questioning the quality of the Illinois players. or is it because they committed to IA?

It's a combo of teams with a ride to give. System fit. And program that is at a higher level so that he can improve his Pro stock. The knock on him is playing against inferior competition and lack of outside shot. Obviously Nelson feels that he can get more money by taking some NIL cash and showcasing himself. Than taking a two way deal.

Want to come over to Iowa and be that dude? Put up 20 points and improve your shot - and then get drafted? C'mon, Nelson!

because I trust Fran's ability to identify players and their ability to play. unlike some o you that doubt their ability to even ties their own shoes once they step foot on campus,
Please go away. So ****ing annoying. Seriously are you a teenager.

I base my beliefs on these players that started as FR under Fran
Basabe
Marble
White
Gesell
Woodbury
Garza
Nunge
Cook
JBo
Wieskamp
need I list more FR starters to prove my point?

think about that 10 former FR started for Fran and they all had excellent careers. to doubt that someone won't or can't step forward is a fool. and has not followed Fran's teams since he took over,

the quality of the incoming players has improved
top 100 4* Sanfort
4* Dembele by Rivals
4* Harding by ESPN
4* Freeman by ESPN
in the 2024 class
Portal
4* Krikke by 247 top 150 portal transfer and On3 that makes 5 4*'s alone in the 24 class,

to even question this group can't or won't contribute either wants this team to fail or can't stand the thought of this team getting better. so which is it? to fail or getting better

This will be a good test for how well Gatens can recruit. I believe he's the lead recruiter for Nelson. Drew has a heck of a program at Baylor and the Bama coach has been impressive so far. The good thing Iowa has going for it their isn't a regional fit like the other two guys they lost out in the Portal to. The Dakota's are far from everyone.
