Iowa to the pinstripe bowl

The reactions about going to New York City is about what I expected. I personally think there's a lot of fear of the big bad New York City. But it's a lot easier to save face by saying things like the weather is bad or how expensive it is.

New York City around the holidays is known to be great. It's not a guarantee that it's going to be below freezing in New York City either. Nashville is also not guaranteed to be even above freezing.

Don't get me wrong I'm not real happy about going to the Pinstripe Bowl but people are are making the actual destination a lot worse than it is. Going to this bowl means we are a mediocre team simple as that.

Because New York sucks.
New York might be cold but it doesn't suck. But it is expensive, especially relative to Iowa prices (I'm in DesMoines all the time). It's a world class city. It has the best theater, museums, music, restaurants, and dare I say it - best looking women anywhere this side of Eastern Europe. So if you set the football game aside, and I know that's not easy, some of you might enjoy yourselves. So ok if you want to write off the game, but don't write off the city. It's a tremendous place to visit, you might surprise yourselves. Just bring your credit card.

This is true. New York is certainly a destination visit........just not for a football fanbase traveling for a bowl game. It's just extra costs to an already expensive trip. Hell, Miami is cheaper..........(but that's not exactly saying a lot).

As for the weather, I'd have to do some digging, but I don't think it's been all that bad in recent years in the week leading up to NYE. Is there a site one could check to see past records of temps and weather in a city?

I used to live in nearby NJ ( Princeton ) from 98-05.
Let me tell y’all a fact. This is a LAAAAME ass bowl!

1st no-one cares. ( unless your ISUcks ).
2nd it’s freezing ****ing cold.
3rd NYC is a great tourist destination IN THE SUMMER! No Central Park , LI beach etc. etc. in the winter.
NYC In the winter - hell no!!!!
Iowa got what they deserved no doubt and it ain’t good.
NYC in late December is like a freezing cold scene from Blade Runner.
New Yorkers hate the city in the winter more than those traveling will.
What a horrible destination for a bowl any year.
I hope no one goes from Iowa or other places.
Sure there will be local Iowa fans from the surrounding areas but this is not a venue we wanna reinforce.

Looks like Iowa is going to the pinstripe bowl MSU is going to the holiday bowl. Northwestern to the music city because they went to pinstripe last year so they can’t go back so.
Great bowl game Iowa!!! Way to go!!!!

For those die hard fans who will make the trip forget NY hotels. Get a Hotel in Newark, North Brunswick, or some place close like Sommerset. Save yourself ~40-50% on accommodations.
If you insist on NYC look to the W on Lex/7th or the Central Park Hilton Towers.

I wasn't going regardless, so destination means nothing to me personally this year. I can say that those Hawk fans I know have said the same thing as most of this board. Zero interest in going to NYC. Many would have made the trip to nashville.
We'll see if the interest in tickets is as poor as what it appears might be the case.

We stayed on 57th a half block off Lexington. Less than a mile to everything. A couple blocks to the subway.

We had to pass through metal detectors to see the Times Square scene on New Year's Eve. Totally safe and secure.

29 out of 39.

29. New Era Pinstripe Bowl: Boston College (7-5) vs. Iowa (7-5) – Wednesday, Dec. 27 (Bronx, N.Y.)

This is going to be fun if the Boston College that decimated Florida State and the Iowa that blew out Ohio State both show up. Otherwise, this game doesn’t do much for us on the entertainment meter. Boston College has developed into a consistent middle-tier team in the ACC and Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz stands to get richer with a bowl game win.

Nice!! Thank you.

Here's what the weather was like for each day of the Pinstripe Bowl:

Dec. 30, 2010- High 39/ Low 20 (no precipitation)
Dec. 30, 2011- High 50/ Low 36 (no precipitation)
Dec. 29, 2012- High 37/ Low 28 (light rain/snow)
Dec. 28, 2013- High 53/ Low 31 (no precipitation)
Dec. 27, 2014- High 54/ Low 37 (no precipitation)
Dec. 26, 2015- High 60/ Low 49 (no precipitation)
Dec. 28, 2016- High 43/ Low 32 (no precipitation)

That's an average high of 48 degrees, and an average Low of 33 degrees.

That's cold, but not all that unbearable. Also, none of those days saw that much wind either.

We went in 2012. It was 50° all three days we were there. It was on New Year's Eve. Stayed in midtown Manhattan($565 a night!), walking distance to Times Square, Central Park(said "good morning" to Yoko Ono), St. Patrick's.

Times Square was being prepped for the big shows the next night. Heard 8 different languages. The center of the universe that time of the year.

Took the subway to Yankee Stadium. Had time to see the Yankees museum and the memorials in right field. Serious baseball history.

Subway back to midtown, dinner and off to New Year's Eve at Times Square. At 8pm there was about a million people between us on 8th Avenue and Times Square.

If you have never been to NYC, this is the time to do it.

Did you go to the Pinstripe Bowl or New York for New Years Eve party? Pinstripe was not played on New Years Eve.

Okay, not Kinnick, but don’t we play better in cold weather games under the lights at night?

I'm sure NYC is wonderful during christmas time. Problem is, the cost puts it out of reach for a lot of people. Nashville would have been significantly cheaper.

Inb4 your not a real.fan if you can't afford 3 grand to stand in a baseball stadium freezing your balls off while Iowa football gets destroyed

I can't believe it. I called Iowa versus Boston College in the Pinstripe after the Wisconsin debacle. That's good news. Iowa can beat them. At the very least, it should be nearly impossible for Iowa to get humiliated by them. Might be boring, but that's a big step up from total embarrassment. :D

I actually might go to this game just because Manhattan and Brooklyn are amazing. Then again, I'm single and looking for great night life and incredibly diverse experiences rather than warm weather and country music. Plus, I have friends in Brooklyn so I might be able to stay with them instead of paying a fortune for hotels. There will be other fans like me there (even if I don't go), that's for sure. Too bad for the family-oriented folks except for those who live in the NE and Mid-Atlantic. Plus, Wadley will get to play his final game in front of his New Jersey family and friends. Oh, and Iowa might actually beat Boston College so there's that, too. New York at Christmas, beautiful and fun. :D

I think you are crazy overestimating Nashville there. Boss. Sure it's an 8 hour drive. Not sure how that's better than a two hour flight. But, OK. And there will be thousands of Hawk fans in NYC to party with, hell thousands already live there. So plenty of people to party with. Not sure how temps in the low 50s are so much better than snow (and there is not guarentee it could snow. It could be 50 in NYC) is so much better to watch a football game.

What part did I overestimate about Nashville? Chief. The only real estimation I made about Nashville was that it would likely be in the 50-60 degrees range. Hoss. If I overestimated the temp, my apologies.

Not much of a guess that there would have been bars upon bars full of Iowa fans. There very well could be thousands of Hawkeye fans in NYC, but mixed in amongst millions of people. I’d take the thousands of Hawk fans in Nashville mixed in amongst a few hundred thousand any day. That’s just me. If you’ve got a different opinion, I can completely understand.

You want to know how an 8 hr drive is better than a two hour flight? It’s called having a family. Five members at a min $300/ticket vs a couple of tanks of gas at most. Not real difficult to see the advantages of driving. This doesn’t even take into consideration traveling once you get into either city.

There’s no guarantees on game time temps and that’s why I didn’t make any. I did say it’s likely that the temps in NYC would be around freezing. I’d much prefer to watch any outdoor game in the low 50’s compared to the low 30’s.

I’m not knocking NYC (the greatest city on Earth) or the Pinstripe Bowl. I’ve said it before, NYC would be a very awesome time to see during the Christmas break. No question. For me personally, Nashville would have been a better destination for a bowl trip. I’ve always wanted to take a mini vacation to Nashville and this would have been a great excuse to do so. It didn’t work out that way, which is fine. I’m just hoping the Hawks show up and win a bowl game.

I respect that. I figured for families in the midwest the cost and convenience would be a factor. One of the really cool things for the players and coaches, though, is that part of their itinerary will be to visit the 9/11 memorial site. I think that's the type of thing that helps put football and other aspects of life in perspective and could be a really powerful experience for the players and coaches and whatever fans decide to go. So, yes, Iowa fans with families in the Midwest lose out, but east coast Iowa fans (with or without families) get something they almost never get--a local Iowa game to attend.

I think of it this way: After a year off from not going to a bowl game, more Midwest families may have the money and desire to see Iowa play in a Florida, Nashville, or San Diego bowl game next year. There might be a bigger turnout than normal next year, too, if Iowa manages to win this year's bowl game. I think it's a good thing, all things considered.

You didn't say any of those details. The family aspect I understand, wasn't said. How was supposed to know you are bringing an entire row? I get that.

Per capita fans? You didn't say that. You only said thousands of fans in Nashville. There will be thousands of fo fans in NYC?

And if you look in thisthreads the average temp for the pinstripe bowl has been in the 40s. Not near freezing.

Based on your post of "Fly to NY and all that goes along with traveling/staying in the city. Watching Iowa/BC in what most likely will be below freezing temps.......

Or

An 8 hr drive to Nashville, a destination I’ve always wanted to see, to hang out and party with thousands of other Hawk fans. Watch a meaningless game in decent 50-60 degree football weather.

Not much of a debate for me personally. NYC would be cool during the Christmas/NYE break, I’d rather go somewhere south for a bowl."

That's all I got to respond to . Lots of knocking of NYC and only positives listed for Nashville. Nothing about you wanting to go to Nashville, nothing about per capita, nothing about bringing a family. Nothing like that, just a very one-sided pro-Nashville, New York sucks post.

I never once said NYC sucked and I’m not going to pretend Nashville is even in the same league as NYC. Actually I’ve been very complimentary in my posts about NYC. I just don’t PERSONALLY have any desire to attend the Pinstripe Bowl and everything that goes into attending it. It’s not worth it TO ME. If by me saying that offends you and NYC, I’m sorry. Not my intention. If a #5 Iowa was playing a #7 BC in the Orange Bowl at Yankee Stadium, I’d be there in a New York minute, regardless of the temp/cost. Unfortunately, a 7-5 Iowa team, playing a meaningless game really isn’t worth the cost/hassle to go to NYC. A 7-5 team playing in Nashville in a meaningless game, is a little more sensible due to its location, cost, weather .... Does this make Nashville amazing and better than NYC, obviously not.

NYC is cool because a lot of players from Jersey, PA, Eastern Ohio and around the East coast will play closer to home. Iowa recruits these areas well. That’s a good thing. There are positives to playing in the Pinstripe vs Music City Bowl.

I'd rather go to Jamaica and watch the game from the beach with some of the hottest women on the planet walking around topless.

If you want more to do than just go to a bowl game, NYC is a great place. So many things to do at all hours of the day. Bars, restaurants, history, art, theater. I know it is expensive for some people but if it isn't someplace warm I think I would rather have a place like NYC where there is tons to do.
