Hey now, if you don't show any offense in the second and third periods you are lucky to get a B+!A first period fall is a b+?
It ain’t good…Mostly agree. Need to give Teske a chance at 133. Woods, Kennedy and Big Cass deserve atleast A’s. Little worried about Nelson after that Grace said he was favoring his knee. He also needs to trust what he has for offense kinda reminds of Warner at times.
Crap just what Nelson needs another injury. Love his family and Nelson always has time to say Hi to me no matter what.It ain’t good…
You would know way more than most. Not trying to sound to negative about Cullen it’s just a little bit frustrating and I feel for him. It can’t be easily following what DeSanto did for us as fans.I’m gonna throw something out there to take into consideration…. Cullen had a MAJOR set back in the off-season and the one thing his goal was set highest for was adding strength and bulk. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to that at all. Young man is giving it all he’s got so let’s cut him a little slack. He should improve week to week. Not certain when to expect Teske bac(sooner than later), but the spot won’t just be given to him when he’s cleared. Both guys are getting healthy. Patience.
You can be frustrated and feel for him at the same time. Most of us likely are. Just wanted to shed a little light on the situation. Cullen is great young man that’s had a horrible bad luck streak. He wasn’t able to do the things he wanted to get done this off-season. He’s one tough SOB to be out there battling the way he is right now. If you know wrestling and pay attention to his matches it’s not hard to see what’s hampering him.You would know way more than most. Not trying to sound to negative about Cullen it’s just a little bit frustrating and I feel for him. It can’t be easily following what DeSanto did for us as fans.
What do you think Tony got out of doing that?A first period fall is a b+?
Slush, a pin following the first TD, all of which was completed in 1:16 is an A. Should the lion play with his food for 5 minutes or just kill it and eat it? I'm thinking kill and eat. Tony can do all the other crap you mentioned in the room next week. And a realistic strategy? Tony's strategy against weaker opponents seems to be pretty sound...take them down and pin them. Wish all of our guys had that strategy! What do you think Tony got out of doing that?
A+ for the aggression and execution, C+ for the plan = B+ overall.
I think Tom would agree Tony “has work to do”, and forcing cowcatchers from top position isn’t going to be a realistic strategy against the guys he’s looking up at in the pecking order. At least wait until the 3rd, after working on other stuff first.
My brother, I'm with you for the most part. I can't give Cobe a B. He barely beat a guy who lost to WrestleStat's 143rd ranked guy out of Cleveland State. If Cobe's going to be our guy at 57 he needs to dominate the weaker opponents. Anything less than a MD against Heck (ranked 87th by WrestleStat), especially the way Cobe's been wrestling, is unacceptable. He's one of my studs; I need him to bring it.As for Real, PK, and Tony
B+s for Cobe, Abe, and Warner
Non-passing grades for the others
Gobblin: Is it his knee. Watching the replay a couple of times it almost looked like he was trying to get his upper leg/hip to work properly. Sure hope it's nothing serious...he deserves some good luck!It ain’t good…
True that...would love to see everyone let it fly like ADS!You would know way more than most. Not trying to sound to negative about Cullen it’s just a little bit frustrating and I feel for him. It can’t be easily following what DeSanto did for us as fans.
If Cass were a freshman, or going against a tough opponent, or wrestling with the dual on the line, I might agree with you. But traveling to Tennessee to put in a little over a minute of mat time against an unranked opponent and working a HS move on you’ll never pull off against a top-end guy seems like a wasted trip to me. Other than checking a box for RPI, what did he accomplish?Slush, a pin following the first TD, all of which was completed in 1:16 is an A. Pretty good write up here MVP. Not much I could argue with you about. Even when we have had great scramblers with diverse attacks (Kem, Eirman, and Lee recently) we are constantly banged up. I don't know what they can do about that aspect, but it sure is frustrating for the fans and the wrestlers. The '24 recruiting class is very good on paper, but there is still work to be done there at a couple weights.During the 197 match the TV announcer made the following comment in regards to Warner.
"Gets mired in hand fighting and collar ties"
This IMO is a very accurate way to sum up the issues this program has. No not everyone but in general terms this is an issue. IMO Brands needs to do some self reflection again. He made some improvements after the drought following 2010 but more is needed.
Yes hand fighting and head pulls are things to be proficient at but they are not the objective, scoring points is the objective. We don't have a judge declaring a winner based on hand fighting and head snapping proficiency. It's like guys get so focused on hand fighting and collar ties they forget how to create offense. We have major issues with a lot of people being able to generate offense. Our scoring holds/ attempts/techniques are so basic that if someone hits even a cradle it's like an offensive explosion. We rarely have guys that are viewed as "dangerous" to wrestle. The question then is why is this the case? My worthless opinion:
1. Recruiting: we have a serious addiction to recruiting guys who are grinder types. Grinder types without a next level pace and gas tank equals boring wrestling. They are typically not good on the mat and don't have big move abilities.
2. As touched on in #1. Our mat game when it comes to scoring is pretty non existent when you take away Spencer. Woods seems to have some skill but he's new. Kem was good there. Warner once in a while gets something. Cass turns low level guys. Siebrecht has some feet to back capability. Not only is our scoring from top game bad but we have been getting worse getting off bottom.
3. Scrambling ability: we are poor here. Other teams practice and emphasize scoring from scramble situations and it shows. This has a lot to do with why we can't finish shots and have issues getting countered. Probably even a reason for lack of shots in many cases. Guys are not good at scrambling and avoid possibly getting in those situations. I don't think it's any secret Brands rails against scrambling. It's a huge part of matches now though so you can't just not be proficient at it.
4. Variable technique or high level technique: We don't have much of either. It's the same hand fighting, collar ties and basic leg shots up and down the lineup for the most part and it's boring. The arsenal of moves and techniques seems limited. Finishing rate is poor.
We have seen the Nelson Brands match (Murin last week) tonight over and over not only with him but lots of other people at various times. Sometimes we win those but it doesn't change the fact it's boring wrestling. I'm tired of hearing Tom say we have to get better. There has been too much talk and not enough action. They need to start by opening their recruiting minds beyond the grinder mentality. Being athletic, quickness, explosive moves, mat skills, variable technique ability. These are good things, they make wrestlers better. It's easier to teach some hand fighting to an athletic guy with great technique than making a grinder into something they are not. They need to get people in house that can teach better mat wrestling that includes scoring and not just riding. They need to get people in house that can improve their scrambling ability. They need to embrace varied techniques and actually use them in matches.
Apologies for the rant but it's been a long time coming. I've actually dozed off during two different duals this year because the wrestling was so damn boring. Changes and improvements need to be made if this program is going to be a legit title threat moving forward. Brands merely talking about needing to get better isn't going to get it done.
I didn't even touch on the injury bug issues but....
Also I'm not sure overall the recruiting momentum we picked up previously has continued. I think we get out worked there. We have too many weights where we are not good enough and honestly without Lee whispering ADS to come here and Eierman we had some major lineup holes that had not been sufficiently addressed, we got a bit lucky.
With the fact being that the kid was 1-5 before he met Cass, I don't think Cass could have learned much no matter how much he played with his food. I'm still giving him an A.If Cass were a freshman, or going against a tough opponent, or wrestling with the dual on the line, I might agree with you. My coach (back in the day) would have been pissed if I did that. Did get pissed.
The room is not and never will be the only and best place to work on stuff.
I was thinking that something might be off for Cullen. I think the high expectations are based on his close matches with ADS. But as a theme for this year's team might be "patience".I’m gonna throw something out there to take into consideration…. Cullen had a MAJOR set back in the off-season and the one thing his goal was set highest for was adding strength and bulk. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to that at all. Excellent summation. It's hard to disagree with much if anything you stated in this post. And man am I tired of boring wrestling and that "let's keep it close and hope things work out in the 3rd or SV" mentality. And sadly - and far too often - (see Iowa State dual - 33, 49, 84, and 97; and Chat dual - 25, 33, 49, 74), when we use that strategy it doesn't end well. We've got to come up with attack like hell for 7 mins mentality so we know what we're capable of...and so we get used to scoring bonus points. We're going to need a ton of bonus points come March and I'm just not seeing it.During the 197 match the TV announcer made the following comment in regards to Warner.

With a one or two exceptions (Cullen being one), it's hard to have too much patience when we have a team capable of beating PSU (with a lot of pieces falling into place) and certainly the second best team in the country, fighting for 4th or 5th if they wrestle like this come March. We've got to be more aggressive and at least try to score more points.I was thinking that something might be off for Cullen. I think the high expectations are based on his close matches with ADS. Unfortunately I have to agree. I do think Chittum has a few more abilities than say a guy like Block and Drake Ayala has upper level quickness and scrambles pretty well. The entire class this year plus Jesuroga and Block next year fit the usual mold though. You’d better be ready for 5+ years more of this. The recruiting class we’re bringing in? All have the same deficiencies as any other Iowa team. With the exception of Arnold - be ready for handfighting, collar ties, head/hands, no scrambling ability and no ability to turn.
Come on Slush, this is such a poor take.If Cass were a freshman, or going against a tough opponent, or wrestling with the dual on the line, I might agree with you. You guys are arguing with a freaking troll! Either block him or don't take his weak bait!Come on Slush, this is such a poor take.
What's Cass going to learn from one of his weakest opponents he'll face all season, if not the rest of his career?
What's to work on? Repetitive TDs? Pry rides and claw rides he can already do against some of the best? Choosing bottom in the 2nd and earning an escape against a guy like that? What's that net you?
No, get out there and end the match like you're supposed to.
And be reminded, that guy was super chippy and looking for a fight. Cass did what a title contender does, knock his ass out early and make a statement.
We never see criticism for the other elite wrestlers doing this, but somehow Cass is held to a different and straight up stupid standard.
Copy that.
Normally I think he has solid takes, but occasionally he sure does find some odd hills to die on.You guys are arguing with a freaking troll! Either block him or don't take his weak bait!
