Iowa vs Illinois thoughts/predictions

yea mizz had their best year ever, but you know that year wouldn't even registar on our radar

Jim Heffernan NCAA champion in 1986... ninth wrestler in Big Ten history to win four conference titles... career record was 131-18-2... national runner-up as sophomore and senior… ranks seventh in career wins (131) in school history.
NCAA Year W‑L‑D
4th-----1983 23-7-1
2nd----1985 40-5-0
1st-----1986 32-3-1
2nd----1987 36-3-0

Mark Perry NCAA champion in 2007 and 2008... four time Big Ten conference finalist, winning two titles...career record was 96-16... national runner up as a sophomore.....scored 25 team points at 2008 NCAA Championships, which lead the tournament field.
NCAA Year W-L-D
3rd-----2005 27-5-0
2nd----2006 21-4-0
1st-----2007 28-4-0
1st-----2008 20-3-0

I think you are definitely selling Perry short. The fact he scored the most team points in 2008 shows considerable dominance. Also, both guys took several losses each season so I see it hard to point to dominance putting either guy on top of the other over the course of their entire career. They were both great and worthy of consideration as Top 10 Hawkeyes!

What a great post and discussion. Two of my favorite hawks, although I will admit the list is pretty long, can I have a 20 person top 10 list? Both outstanding wrestlers I love Perry's back story, his win over Hendricks in the finals was amazing and his trip take downs were awesome, but Heffernan was on those teams that wrestled in Carver those first few years and as a kid going from a few years watching in the fieldhouse to watching in Carver was awe inspiring, and made all those wrestlers on those teams special to me, as a kid. So in other words, they were both equally studs at Iowa. So thats my pick, fwiw.

At this point I am just hoping that Illinois can make it to the dual, if they were unable to fix the bus that was supposed to take them to the Midlands then we all need to say a little prayer that they make it to the weigh ins for this one. I have no doubt IMAR will show up but everyone else is suspect.

Illinois is always fired up vs Iowa, especially with Perry in the mix. Things were a bit chippy last year. We better be 100% ready to roll in this one. Honestly Illinois is capable of winning at 133, 141, 157, 165, 174, 184, and 285.

Capable of winning 184?? I don't think so. That said, I do agree with the the rest of them. Sure would like to see Meyer do something this year...big hopes and not a lot to show just yet. Fingers crossed...

I think MVP is thinking about Brooks' loss to Koepke during Brooks freshman year. I think it's fairly obvious that Brooks has developed quite a bit since then and I'm confident that he hammers Koepke. They are both good-sized strong 184 lbers. I think Sammy will just have too much offense for him.

Brooks and Koepke both wrestled around the same weights during their high school careers in IL. I'd be shocked if they didn't train together or at least in the same groups from one time to another. When two guys know each other pretty well it will make matches much closer and increase the odds of an upset considerably.

However, we are talking about a result from 2-3 years ago. If anyone truly thinks they have progressed at the same rate and Brooks isn't head and shoulders better than Koepke at this point in their careers, I have a timeshare I would like to talk to you about.

If anything, that loss is a motivator to Sammy and he decides to take Jeff out back to the woodshed to make up for it.

Although Iowa is the heavy favorite at the weight, I think the Illini can win 197 and have a far better chance there than stealing one at 184.

Slim has a burning hatred for Burak. Heck, he'll pry pick against him vs. Pfarr too.
Haven't you heard? Iowa's pitching a shutout, at home, against the Gophers as long as BG wrestles. Burak isn't losing to Pharr in CHA.

Koepke looked a little careless against the Buckeyes. He will have to wrestle smarter against Sammy or that will end up bonus pts for the Hawks. I think Lee for Illinois has potential but he will be overmatched vs. Burak . Too much experience. Gotta like the loyalty by Papa Bear but that won't be enough tomorrow night.

Iowa by criterion #3 - Total match points scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls

So I have it going down to last match/criteria regardless of where they start. Along with the fact that anybody can get pinned to upset the apple cart I wouldn't be surprised by an Iowa blowout (8-2 in matches) or Illinois out right win (7-3 in matches) because the only locks I see are at 125/149/157.

*Upset alert*
Andre Lee uses one or a combination of blast double/cross wrist tilt/inside trip to knock off #3 Burak. :)

Andre Lee is a pinner it would appear. My question is when was the last time Burak was pinned or tilted for backs? Burak stays in good position and is tough to score on. Burak will take care of business.

Clark beat Richards 8-2 last time they met right? Surprised so many are crowning Richards. My upset special is Rhodes winning at 165.
I know. Just cause Richards had a good match against JDJ of Ohio State last week? JDJ is overrated in my opinion and will not AA this year.

^^^This is the absolute best case for Illinois. This is how i think it will go. Yes I'm an Iowa homer, but non of this can't happen easily
Gilman with the TF. This beat down will be worse then what Gilman did to true freshmen Lizak of Minny last year.
Clark with the decision. Wasn't it 8-2 last time they wrestled.
Carton with the dec
Sorenson has stepped it up this year and I see the major
Sorry Cooper but TF Martinez
Rodriguez dec

Brooks Major
Burak Dec could be major
Stoll dec could be more. Stoll beat him last year and Stoll is much improved this year.

PBS is just messin with us... Illinois has about as much chance of beating Iowa as Indiana would have of beating Minnesota in wrestling.

Whoops...Wait a minute...

I would love to see Rhoads win tonight for two reasons. The SROD decommited from us and I like PR, from KC area and living his dream to be an iowa starter. Long time coming and would like to see some success for a kid thats waited 5 years for his chance. I dont think we expect an AA form him but these are the type of matches that will be the highlights of his career.

I think Clarks match is a toss up adavantage Clark. They split last season and Cory is coming off a slight injury and really has looked slightly flat on his feet offense as of late. Its like groundhogs day again. It worries me. this is how he looked when he seemd to barely lose that string of matches last season about this time. He found a way to work past that and raise his game. He will again but Id be kidding myself if I didnt say his offense isnt rusty. Hes back to having to try to drag them down to the mat and try to create a scramble instead of clean takedowns. Good news is unlike last year hes gotten stingy on just giving up that 1st TD. Its a big match for him tonight for the things i just listed. Get back to dominating, not grinding.

he's scrappy, not as talented as a lot of guys, but he has made a decent career for hisself. I hate him, but have grudging respect for making do with less. Richards, clark ,taytor, and even hall way more talent.

They wrestled 3 times last year and Cory won twice

Cory is coming off an injury however. Tough first match back

This is the biggest toss up of the dual. Clark coming off of injury + Richards starting the season on fire same as 1st half last year before fading is why I picked Zane in this one.

Hoping Sam will be in the frame of mind he was in against Ross Larson. It should be another signature win for Sam as Black has had one very good win. 285: Brooks Black (ILLI) over Tanner Hall (ARST) (Dec 4-3) on Nov. 15th

Any easy way to watch the Stoll/Larson match now? I missed it while I was working
