Iowa WBB 2025 Recruiting Thread

Bella Hines commits to LSU, which I find a bit mystifying. Don't get the attraction, to the coach or the school.
She wasn't going to come to Iowa regardless. When she gave the "too small" gesture during a high school game to a girl who looked like she should have been playing JV & put it on a highlight video, I just couldn't see Iowa ever bringing her in for a visit.

LSU is full of stars. Flau’Jae is a very talented singer/rapper. Angel is a celebrity. It’s a culture / brand thing. For many black kids, LSU is a dream destination. It’s hard for some people to get it, but it’s the truth.

Agreed. Also, it seems like her Dad (based off his twitter/social media use) really cares about NIL/social media stuff. I am not surprised by her going there at all.

The Next transfer portal list shows 6 Carolina players leaving; would raise some questions for me if I were a recruit.
Reportedly Lexi Donarski (ISU transfer with her Covid year left) is kind of stuck there bc she is in a two year masters program. Sucks for her she left one program where 6 people transferred out only to move to another with the same issue.

Yeah, should've stayed put unless she had issues with Fennelly.
I would assume she did. She was a star on that team. Kylie reportedly did, I figured that was the case with Donarski as well.
Fritz is another one who should've stayed. Went to Baylor and hardly saw the court, back in the portal.
Same deal I assume. I think that team had 5-6 outbound transfers last year, same number this year.

Apparently Callie Levin has a younger sister Tenley, class of 2029. Already 6'0", can play PG, 2 and wing. Plays for Missouri Phenom (Iowa) AAU. Getting quite a bit of press. Looks like Drake may have already offered.

In re: to 2025, I'm assuming that most recruits are waiting to see where the portal players land before they make a final decision.

I somehow doubt that was the reference. Not really a shocker, although I'd love to see her as a Hawkeye. Here's what Lisa and the U would have to decide: Assuming your priority is PG, what might you still do with the scholarship and roster spots of Jones and KJE to make room for this caliber of player? IMO, the U needs to step up in honoring Ava's scholarship. And if I'm KJE, I have to know that I'm not seeing the floor at Iowa. But does Lisa have that convo with her? Did she have it w/ Sharon? Has Bluder ever rescinded a scholarship?

Not sure why you bring her up. With Hannah on the roster, I don't see us looking at her. She already knows where she's going, thus the do not contact. I wish people would stop bringing up Ava. She has worked tirelessly to get back to normal. I admire coach Bluder for not bursting her bubble.

Amen. Ava's scholarship will be honored, and it should be. Accept it and move on.

If Coach Bluder can't have a winner with 14 schollies, and save one for Ava, somethings wrong. I know Gyamfi hasn't played much but what an awesome teammate. I love her personality. Watching her go up to Kate on the sidelines after getting popped in the nose, giving her a hug and kiss and words of encouragement was priceless.

If Jada doesn’t get minutes at the 3 or 4 next year, she was certainly overrated (not that she’d be the first).

I did say the University should honor her scholarship. And there's been plenty of discussion on this board about the possibility of a medical hardship.

I’m perplexed by people acting like the university would have to make some special exception for Ava Jones to medically retire and stay on scholarship. This is standard operating procedure in these cases and happens on a regular basis at Iowa. It wouldn’t be anything new or different.

Would have to? She's an Iowa Hawkeye as long as she wishes to be.

I’m not saying it’s going to happen by any means, just that if Ava decides to go that route that it’s standard practice for an athlete who medically retires to remain on scholarship.

We are not disagreeing on that point. We are just saying Ava should be given every opportunity to try and return from an arduous rehab. She seems to be making strides. Ava Strong!

Seems some of you misinterpreted my questions around Ava's scholarship and roster spot. First of all, I'm a huge fan and admirer of Ava, both as a hooper and as a human in her pursuit of several levels of recovery, AND of Bluder honoring that commitment. My question is around what the U, the B1G, and the NCAA might be able to do around the status of such a player. What I wonder is whether, as in other sports, can a player not take a medical redshirt season*, (without retirement), or take an "injured reserve" season while that roster spot opens to others. And if not, why, and do those parameters need to be examined and changed?

Once a player goes on a medical scholarship at a school, they can’t ever play at that school again. If they want to resume their college career, they would need to transfer.

Yes, most of us are aware of that. But that does not address my specific questions.

In any sport you can get a medical redshirt.

In no sport does a scholarship spot open up based on a scholarship athletes medical status.

A team gets the number of scholarships they get. Period.

No.

Hope she never does since I would not want to be a fan of a team that would treat people that way.

Also...why do people keep asking questions like this?

Even if a coach was a piece of shit and wanted to...it's against the rules to do so.
Athletic scholarships are conditional. Scholarships may be revoked for failure to meet academic and/or conduct standards. They are not guaranteed.

Nevertheless, I do support the practice of keeping players who meet the standards, are following team rules, and want to continue their career at Iowa.

Failure to meet an academic or social standard is far different than the context the question was asked in.

They cannot be revolked based on athletic performance and are guaranteed as long as the student is in good standing for the duration of their four years of eligibility (COVID year being the exception and not guaranteed).

To answer your question... I would say, maybe. Ava's situation falls somewhere between medical hardship (aka medical redshirt) and medical exemption. The situation is unique, and the NCAA has the power and precedent to treat it as such. They handle, and grant, appeals all of the time and I suspect a way forward is always in discussion. One thing that is clearly off the table is a standard medical exemption. Ava is a great Hawkeye and Bluder & Co won't let her end her career before natural attrition of graduation.

This is not an accurate statement. Take Griffin Liddle for example. He just medically retired from the football team, but is still on scholarship. It’s just a different type of scholarship specifically for players who aren’t on the active roster anymore. His scholarship doesn’t count against the 85 scholarship limit for football.

That would correct

I worded my response incorrectly....should have stated it that they cannot be put on some sort of medical leave one year and comeback the next year and not have the scholarship count the year they were injured
