Iowa's Fargo roster

There are no cakewalks held in Fargo, North Dakota. Drake Ayala’s path to the podium is challenging. From the Round of 32, on Ayala’s side of the bracket, I check some worthy opponents. I have seen these wrestlers on several occasions and have high opinion of their talent; Baysinger (IL, up from 106 lbs. as freshman), Rivera (WS) and Robinson (IL). No walkovers anywhere in the remainder of the bracket.

Fargo, North Dakota, a tough place to wrestle. Wusses need not apply.

Ya sounds pretty good. But if he is a maryland commit and Avila lost to him.. makes me wonder how hard to be after Avila. Not saying neither aren’t very good wrestlers. just being greedy
Maryland has had a good recruiting run recently. Remember, Clemson just got there and was starting from scratch. Miller is a top 100 recruit.

Flo had them ranked in the 70s and 80s for the class with Avila the lower ranked. Avila was filled out pretty well at a young age. Other guys have gotten stronger and he looks chunky at 145. Should be 138 now and a 141 college max.
Avila looked chunky and slow to me also. I have zero inside knowledge but he doesn’t seem to fit the Iowa “type” to me.

Just watched mason Gibson get teched. Since when have you’ve been able to leg pass without give up exposure in freestyle? Gibson was about to get scored on and leg passed and they said no points because he voluntarily did it and than it was challenged and upheld?

There's an epidemic in American freestyle reffing where folkstyle leaks into freestyle thinking. Technically, you are allowed to expose your own back voluntarily, but this is thought of in the case of turns, chest locks, and other counter exposures. You would never see that situation reffed that way overseas. The fact that two officials white paddled it and then confirmed it on review is pretty astounding. One of the worst calls I've seen recently.

Another common mistake you see is the inside leg/merkel position, which is a takedown in folkstyle, but not freestyle. I see it given in freestyle matches way too often.

How did Block end up doing? Really like this kid.

I think he has Bozaukis tomorrow in round of 16... Just watched Avila beat Rahnavardi last minute. Avila is very explosive but man does he stall and use injuries... that match bugged me. I am really not trying to be a hater on this kid but definitely not an Avila fan.

So for 16U Walker in the final at 220. Also of note Hakon Peterson is in the 88 lb final. He lives in WI but part of Sebolt. Dru lost to a tough kid, hopefully can get third. Hagarty doing well before knee issue. Not much else of note Iowa related.

For Juniors RD of 16 of note:

126- Drake and Gable Porter
132- Block doing well, has #1 Bouzakis next match.
138- Jesuroga was doing well but lost to #1 seed last match.
145- Rathjen unbeaten.
160- Riggins is unbeaten.
170- Tate N unbeaten Also Cole Glazier unbeaten.
195- Voelker unbeaten as is Mooberry. Kolby Franklin unbeaten as well, if he can hold 197 he looks like a beast.

Kueter, Hill and Runyon at 220 also unbeaten right now

Looks like he just lost to Sasso in the semis
I am assuming that S. Sasso is the brother of Sammy Sasso. Sammy was in his corner but I also saw him working with other kids from PA. The younger Sasso looks just like Sammy but he is the 195 lb. version! Looks like a very interesting recruit.

Totally agree. Who the hell do these kids think they are trying to play multiple sports while in high school.
Bailing on a team in the playoffs?? What does multiple sports have to do anything? Is there no commitment made to your teammates?

What if instead he was a first round MLB draft pick and signed his contract. Is he still abandoning his team?

Yes. Not sure why that would change anything?

If Spencer left NCAAs to go play in a Pokémon tournament, would that be abandoning his team?

Many coaches have this same mentality and I disagree.

I think we'd see a lot more of the single sport stars playing multiple sports if more coaches would swallow their pride about their sport and work with the athletes.

I totally get not wanting a diva on your team, showing up whenever he wants to and setting a bad example, but if a kid is mature enough to come to the coach and say "hey coach, I want to play baseball and help the team, but wrestling is my passion and priority. I will give you all the time I can, but there's some wrestling events I have to go to". There's no reason that coach shouldn't be understanding and work with the kid.

Personally, my baseball coach did not work with our stud wrestler, and he subsequently chose not to play baseball. He was a good player too, and it was a shame not having him on the team.

I get that, and I agree with you if this was a regular season game. I’d have no problem with it.

But to miss the playoffs??? There has to be some responsibility to your teammates.

How do you know his teammates aren't on board with this? Do you really think there were no conversations prior to this and he no-called no-showed his team when the bus was supposed to leave?

You don’t leave your team in the playoffs lol. Unless he doesn’t start and isn’t much of a contributor in the first place. Missing a practice or regular season game OK.

How is Iowa still playing high school baseball in mid July?

I’m sure there were conversations, and of course he didn’t no show. That doesn’t change my opinion at all. If he’s a contributing member to a team, he should be there for the team when it is most important.

You do realize, don’t you, that Fargo is the tournament for wrestlers wanting to impress college coaches? I don’t care if he missed the state championship baseball game - if he believes his future is in wrestling, he is absolutely doing the right thing. Kind of like missing a game to attend a non-reschedulable job interview that is essential to getting your dream job.
