Is Matt Campbell the Hayden Fry of Iowa State?

If he continues to have success, Campbell will only be in Ames for a couple of more seasons.

Yeah if I was betting on it. I'd put the line at 2.5 years and go the under route. Think he stays 2 more. Curious to see what lot of people outside of Ames think on how many years he will stay before he leaves. It's funny to hear some ISU faithful think just because he signed an extension he isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Because we've never seen a coach sign a contract extension in college football to only break it and leave for somewhere else for more $....

I hate to say this, but I really think we could see him stay quite a while.
It's not all bad having a fan base that loves you, getting a good pay
check, and having an administration that understands and tolerates
the ups and downs of college football.

and this is why isu is isu. They have never been able to sustain success. It isn’t one, two or three years that makes isu the dominant team in the state it is isu being better than Iowa for 15-20 years that will make them the dominant team in the state. isu has had one coach make it more than 10 years in its history and guess what he still ended up with a woeful record.

But what will exist are programs that are destination jobs. Iowa's is. Sorry.
This may be a little bit bold of a statement. Fry was the fourth coach hired in 8 years at Iowa and took a few years to get a winning season but had a great career after that. Then he was replaced by his former assistant, who will eventually be replaced by his son. Which shows great coaching stability within the program, but I’m not sure designates Iowa City, IA a destination that coaches are jockeying to get to. I don’t mean this as a slight, just to say nowadays there are very few schools that are true destinations. Additionally, there are very, very few coaches with the personality to settle into a medium sized town and spend their coaching career there. Iowa should be commended for hiring two of these coaches in a row. This is the reason even ISU fans assume Campbell will leave eventually due to his age and the environment in college football.

Hayden also won a conference title in his 3rd year. Will Matty boy be doing the same this year?

CID - u missed the whole point. A coach won 5 games in 2 years and in spite of that gets a prime job at Auburn. The point was he gets a huge high profile job after a whopping 5-19 record. It is because ISU is a joke. If he went 5-19 at about any other program there is no way the alumni would have ever allowed it. That is the point.

I’m not sure how well versed the alumni base of Auburn was on ISU football history, but having had Chizik as a former DC probably had something to do with them hiring Chizik back even under his dire circumstances at ISU. I also feel it is likely that he would have been a 5-19 coach at Auburn as well if his boosters hadn’t been so “generous” in delivering him a ridiculously talented college QB. After Newton was gone he bagan reverting to what he truly was and was promptly fired.

Chizik knew the "inner workings" of the Auburn athetic dept and booster relationships, and was willing to work under those parameters. His wife hated Iowa and they bolted at first chance. He didn't get the Auburn job because he was such a good coach.
