Eye - great arguments. Good work. I saw earlier the classic line from the voice of college football, Herbie. "Well Iowa St., is well Iowa St.". Perfect. And always will be. Hell most people outside of Iowa don't know ISU has a football team.

I could not help but think this starting in the second half of his first season when, although they were 3-9, ISU was quite competive the last several games, and this thought was further solidified with their 8-5 record and upsets last year.
I do not like ISU any more than anybody else on this board, and I realize that a lot of people on here tend to talk smack, but I am just trying to be objective about the situation. Campbell has been pretty impressive so far in my opinion.
Of course, we all know that coaches tend to use ISU as a stepping stone (Johnny Majors, Earl Bruce) to bigger and better things, and hopefully for our sake, Campbell will do the same. I just do not like them simply because then we have to fight them for the few good in-state recruits that there are.
I posted a very similar thread a few years ago after Paul Rhoads' first year, and I turned out to be wrong, fortunately, but just cannot help but think that when all is said and done, Matt Campbell well could be to ISU what Hayden was to us.
That would be an interesting feat for a Big 12 team since the Big 12 doesn't have any New Years Day bowl tie-ins other that the Sugar Bowl when it's not hosting a CFP semifinal game.Have the Clones EVER been close to a New Years' bowl? No - not even sniffed one.

No January bowl games in general. (Sorry for the delay in responding. I don't come here often especially in the off season.)Is it only January 1? Or is January bowls in general?

The hell are you talking about? OSU played in five January Bowl games since 2010, only one being the Sugar Bowl. Others include Cotton, Fiesta, and the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Not going to waste my time looking up all the other current or former January tie ins for the B12.No January bowl games in general. (Sorry for the delay in responding. And you guys wonder why everybody pokes fun at the big 12/whatever as a second rate conference?????That would be an interesting feat for a Big 12 team since the Big 12 doesn't have any New Years Day bowl tie-ins other that the Sugar Bowl when it's not hosting a CFP semifinal game.
Is Matt Campbell the Hayden Fry of Iowa State? Hmm, he has to be the Johnny Majors and Earl Bruce before he can ever become the Hayden Fry. Add to that, he needs to get ISU to a Big time bowl game, and win a Big 12 championship as Hayden won the Big ten and took two Hawkeye teams to Rose Bowls. So, no, Campbell is not even close to being in Hayden's league. See me in about 15 or 20 years, if Campbell is still at Iowa State that is. My bet is, he will be gone to greener pastures once a bigger fish in the College football sea comes calling.
Your correct, I forgot the 90.Hayden took 3 Iowa teams to the Rose Bowl. The 81, 85, and 90 Hawkeye teams ended up in Pasadena.
Still, your point stands. And this thread is stupid.
I don’t think anybody is going to be Hayden Fry anymore. Guys like Fry and Ferentz who stay for 20 years HAVE NEVER EXISTED AT ISU.
Good lord that is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard.Campbell is so much younger than ol' raisin face so his success will last much longer.
Fify
Cheesedick's ISU years had absolutely nothing to do with his hiring at Auburn.Nope. With ISU's OOC and the trend of the conference he will win 8 games a year. He is gone within 2 years tops. The fact is Chizik won like 5 games in 2 years and that was enough to get him an Auburn offer. ISU has about the worst reputation in football so win at all you can sell a coach to another fan base.

Yep, and I think they are highly unlikely to exist anywhere in this environment.

How can one compare a former assistant at Auburn, hired back as head coach, with Matt Campbell, with no Power 5 background?

Hayden Fry was a good hire by Bump Elliott at Iowa, as was Campbell by Jamie Pollard at ISU.
You putting the Fry hire and the Campbell hire on the same level might be the dumbest thing I've ever read. Congrats.
Your reading comprehension is poor. I suggested don't compare Campbell to Chizik. No reference was made to Fry.
"Hayden Fry was a good hire by Bump Elliott at Iowa, as was Campbell by Jamie Pollard at ISU."
You didn't write that?
I did and I should have also said Bob Bowlsby made a good hire with Kirk Ferentz.
Gene Chizik should never have been hired north of the Mason-Dixon Line.
Saying Fry was a "good" hire and Campbell was also a "good" hire is beyond stupid. Do you seriously think the Fry hire = the Campbell hire?
They were both good hires. Fry was a hall of fame hire. Campbell was a good hire and he will play competitive football at ISU.
I suspect this year's game will be competitive.
