Is now the time to get rid of Native American mascots?

Didnt Illinois get an otter or something?

The time is long past for most. I'll make an exception for the Seminoles and others that have the support of their namesake tribes.

Redskins definitely needs to go.

Not sure about the Indians.

I think Braves and Chiefs are fine.

Official tribe names like Blackhawks, Illini, Seminoles, etc. should be up to the actual tribes. I think most of them actually like the affiliation.

Blackhawsks are not a tribe. It was the name of a Sauk chief who led some of his people back to their village of Saukenuk on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities area in 1832 after they had been forced to cede their Illinois lands to the US by the treaty of 1804 by a few of their members whom the government had gotten drunk in St. Louis and without the permission of the rest of the tribe. This led to the so-called Black Hawk war as Illinois militamen (including a young Abraham Lincoln) chased them up the Rock River in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin before they were massacred at the so-called "Battle" of Bad Axe as the attempted to cross the MIssissippi River into Minnesota.

Uggh. Tough story, sadly only one of many...

I'm guessing this was a passive-aggressive shot at FSU since Seminoles were left off your list. My take is leave it up to the Seminole Tribe... When they say it's time, it's time. One year after they say so, we roll out the new identity and open a culturally sensitive museum to the Seminole Tribe on campus.

Black Hawk was captured and imprisoned for a time, but was eventually released. He died at Iowaville, near Selma and Eldon near the Van Buren/Davis County line in southeast Iowa along the Des Moines River, and was buried there. Later on, his grave was robbed and his skeleton was displayed at a museum in Burlington. The museum later burned down and his bones have long been believed to have been burned with the building, although there are other theories as to where they ended up: https://qctimes.com/news/local/rese...cle_2cdcfd4b-fe0b-538b-9d8c-e8940f287f47.html

The Seminole situation isn't as simple as some depict it. In general to the smaller Florida branch of the tribe has supported it but the larger Oklahoman branch has not been as pleased with the situation.

That's ok. We are the Florida State Seminoles, not Oklahoma Seminoles. The Seminoles that stayed in FL never surrendered to the United States and are the only unconquered native american tribe in the country.

That looks like a McKenney and Hall illustration. Thanks for sharing.

I think the Indians need to change their logo away but otherwise I'm fine. It does depend on the team/situation. Redskins is definitely an offensive, racist term.

The Oklahoma Seminoles hate the Florida Seminoles hence their disinterest in supporting FSU which the Florida Seminoles like. It's all just jealousy as the Oklahoma Seminoles were shipped off to bumble%*^ Oklahoma where they have almost no job prospects and their casino take is tiny. So they are some of the poorest people in the country. Conversely the Florida Seminoles are some of the wealthiest people in the country as they have some of the wealthiest casinos, great natural gas and other resource deals and own lots of businesses in South Florida all while having a low tribal count as only 300 of them stayed "Unconquered" (which is another reason Okie Seminoles hate FSU, we Honor those who never surrendered while they did in fact surrender so there's some pain in their history we point out).

But the Florida and Oklahoma Seminole tribes have opposite problems. The Okie Seminoles are poor and deal with crime, lack of job opportunities, malnutrition, alcoholism and drugs. The Florida Seminoles deal with loss of culture as they’re too integrated into Florida society as a whole, diabetes and an unwillingness by the young to work as they are so rich just living off of dividends.

The last public figure I saw said the Florida Tribe was sitting on $15 billion, their operating profits are about $1.5 billion per year and they distribute about $650 million a year in dividends just from casinos alone. Each individual member of the tribe gets roughly $150k a year in Tribal dividends, plus free healthcare and private education. And that’s BEFORE they do any work of any sort. And a lot of them have “sweetheart” jobs were they hardly do any work for a hefty salary at one of the Seminole companies. So if you’re in the Seminole tribe in Florida, you can sit on your %*^* and make $150k a year or do some work and make WAY more than that. Conversely, I can’t quickly find anything showing what the Oklahoma Seminoles get from the tribe but their average household income including work is only $32.5k a year which is well below the average American household income of about $65k. Keep in mind, if two Florida Seminoles marry each other (which isn’t happening a lot anymore, which is part of their cultural problems) and have two kids they would be bringing in $600,000 a year...without working.

We should take care of the Sioux and Crow people in the Dakotas and Montana. What we did to them is truly deplorable.

Not only change every mascot but Trump should dump Pence and select a female Native American for his VP.

I would never have guessed that having driven through the Everglades. Makes sense though.

Redskins, Chiefs, ECT.. in this time of racial sensitivity
“Redskins” needed to be dumper 50 years ago. “Redskin” is a racist, derogatory term and there is no lace for it in America.
I see nothing wrong with Indian monikers. I still cannot believe that Chief Wahoo is gone! Absolutely the greatest professional sports logo ever! And replaced by a BLOCK “C”.....jeeeeebus keeeeeerist! That’s enough to put me on the warpath!
