Is Stanley set in stone

I was referring to his potential. ;)
Not sure what the wink is for. Probably potential in bed or something. Either way, I'm just pointing out that we don't know what the potential of Mansell OR Petras are yet and we know how bad Stanley can be so why just give him the job with no competition? Stanley needs to be WAY more consistent this next year and hopefully the offseason gives him a chance to work on that

I believe it was Bledsoe as well.
My bad, Bledsoe, not Breese. Point being, Bledsoe was in his prime, no one saw Brady coming. They will play the best QB going forward.

Are IKM and Toren the RBs next year, no one knows that. Maybe Bryan is a star. Maybe the freshman Geil starts. Maybe Toks is better than all of them.

I question whether you really evaluated those bad performances to come up with Stanley being the problem. Theres a lot more to it than that.

Stanley will roll into the spring as the man based on what he did this season. Kirk and company have shown that they are pretty loyal, but I think they will probably say its an open competition. Unless Mansell or Petras is head and shoulders above Stanley on the field, it's Stanley's job. Frankly, Petras will most likely be redshirted so Mansell will be the only one in competition, but I think unless Stanley takes a huge step back, he will be the man the next two years.

25 TD'S 6 INTS. Uh, nope. Stanley's job.
One of the very worst offenses and passing offenses in the entire country - job should be up for grabs. Opposing teams didn't even fear or respect Iowa's passing game. They often loaded the box against the certain run and almost always guessed correctly.

Stanley is QB for 2018. However, we can all dream that he's in the 2019 NFL draft.
Mansell and Petras are then competing to start as either RSF or Soph

And he STILL put up those numbers. You've actually proved my point. Thanks!

What will be different next year? We lose our best offense player and arguable our best offensive lineman
So none of the returning players will make significant improvement? Is it not possible that Stanley gets in a comfort level with his young WR's and TE's that he didn't have last year, considering he wasn't named the starter until days before game one. Will our two young pups at tackle make solid strides? Will BF make strides as OC? I actually think we'll see significant improvement from next years offense, at least from a consistancy standpoint.

And yet Stanley still has a shot for the all time record for passing touchdowns in a season. Hmmmm........
because we passed WAY more often inside the 10 than any season I can recall.
that said I do think nate has a lot of potential
also i dont see a true frosh starting a season for iowa....

Quarterback was not the problem with our passing game this year,.... Stanley will own the position next season....

Hope so

As long as he continues to grow and improve the way we expect, he has it sewed up. If he suddenly stops working and getting better, then anyone would be vulnerable.

Petras (or Mansell for that matter) would have to be clearly better than Stanley to beat him out. Stanley had an excellent season as a first year starter. I really like how he processes the game, and his physical attributes remind me of Ben Roethlisberger. If we get some wide receivers who can catch up to his deep ball, he will be phenomenal.

While I do not expect Stanley to get beaten out for the starting position, it really isn't that long ago that a 2 year incumbent got beaten out. Beathard beat out Rudock in 2015.

he got beat out by a guy that had been around for a couple years, learned the system, and had plenty of reps with the team

petras will likely RS unless we have multiple injuries imo....

LOL, I'm the joke.......meaningless coming from somebody who proved that there is fact stupid questions
There are no stupid questions....just stupid people asking questions.

Wow, it's as if you don't know anything about football. Sorry Twister, Dumb post. Teams don't load the box against the 'certain run' (whatever that is), how many they have in the box is dictated by our formations and their coverage. I've explained this numerous times, you must have missed it.

You are correct. I do know stupid. I see it all around me and in about every other post on this site. :)

Or is the QB position going to be opened up and let the best man win. With Mansel and now Petras signing, can one of these guys take his job?
Of course there will be a position battle at QB! You WANT there to be competition. However, if Stanley doesn't take advantage of a seasons worth of starts to improve and build an insurmountable lead on the others .... then shame on him! Unlike all the others, he also has a full season of gamefilm on himself for self-scouting. He should be grading out higher than all the others while in drills and working the O.

Like I said before, Stanley is over rated. His success was the product of a new, outstanding passing scheme and top notch play calling. Plain and simple........
Of course, everyone has a chance every year. Competition is critical for kids to improve and for development.

To my knowledge, there is still no player named "Breese". First time I thought it could be a typo.. The second time is just stupid... Not to mention he is still a high level starter in the league! Drew BREES that is..

There is no dumb question but there are easy answers. Nate beat out a 4* recruit for #2 as a true freshman. In his first year as starter he's on the verge of setting a school record for TDs in a season (2 short) with a 25/6 ratio, with a couple of 5 TD games.

The easy answer is "no."

With 40% of our staring oline out our offense did fantastic with stanley as a new qb.

107th out of 129 is not what I would call "fantastic". I would say "sucks". We must have different standards. 2 offensive linemen being replaced happens to all the teams. It is not an excuse. Iowa's passing game was a joke. Opposing teams did not respect it and rightfully so.

Mansel wont see the field as a QB unless someone gets hurt.
This may be true. The current offensive scheme will not utilize PM skills as a runner. He needs options plays and QB runs which are rarely run with our current offense. Saw him play as a high school QB and he is very good in this environment.

Stanley was 20th in TD passes and 44 in passing yds. I would call that pretty damn good. Your numbers really aren't that meaningful because there are other factors. A lot of teams (and a lot of bad ones) run spread offenses which culminate in a lot of passing yds. Some teams are behind a lot and forced to throw, once again producing inflated passing yards. Besides Wisconsin, what game were we in a situation where we had to throw to catch up? That would be NONE. Also, we typically run less plays than these 'hurry up' teams that results in less yardage period. Look at all the top passing yardage teams. Most weren't real good teams.
I think passing efficiency is a better indicator of how effective your passing game is, and we were 40th in that category.
Yes, we have different standards. Some of us understand football, and you........not so much. I will kind of agree with you in one regard. Teams have not respected our vertical passing game for awhile now allowing them to play a lot of man (cover1 and cover0) thus allowing their safeties to provide a lot more run support. We threw vertically a lot more this year, but Stanley really struggled hooking up with the receivers, especially early in the year. Our passing game is FAR from a 'joke', but in order to get defenders 'out of the box', they have to continue to improve the vertical passing game forcing our opponents to play safeties over the top and give deep help.

Iowa was ALWAYS behind on downs and 3rd and long. It went something like this - "1st down = run stuffed, 2nd down = run stuffed again, 3rd and long = pass and way too often followed by a punt". I think Stanley can become a great qb, just not there yet. His spot should be up for competition. Even more so, Brian F has failed as OC.
