Is this a clean basketball play?

Basing just off that clip, yeah it’s definitely dirty. Would like to see the couple seconds before, did the defender lose her balance or what? Can’t see a way that isn’t a flagrant unless she was tripped and in the process of falling or something along those lines

the defender is coming from the side and falls into Caitlin's legs.

does this happen often in the women's game? if so, it's news to me.

That is some selective editing. I would invite you guys to watch at least the one second before the clip. CMM lost her balance. Glad there was no injury because it was absolutely dangerous, but if you watch the lead up it was in no way intentional.

Fun game last night. You guys played very well and caught IU on a really off night by Parrish, Garzon, and Moore-McNeil, but Grace Berger steadied us. Hopefully IU will give you a better representation of how we can play next time. The women's teams are a great watch. Kudos to the Iowa Women's team - you guys play really hard and that freshman post is truly outstanding - she's going to be a problem for the whole conference.

Hmm interesting. Show a longer clip fran

Not trying to understate that it was dangerous. Glad there was no injury because there could have been.

But it absolutely was unintentional. Chloe Moore-McNeil is a junior who has played a lot and has zero technical fouls and zero flagrant fouls during her entire college career. She was up on Clark for most of the game; on this one she had to close out from a distance. When she was closing out Clark stopped quickly and stepped into her shot. Moore-McNeil couldn't avoid Clark's right leg coming forward.

Bullshit.

Fair enough. You are more than entitled to your own conclusion. But like the other poster said, watch more of the clip than the split second before contact.

Btw, was it intentional when Clark got called for a foul for poking Moore-McNeil in the eye later that half?

I watched it live. I watched the replay during the game. Like I said, I believed it was dirty last night and I still believe it was dirty. After all, how often does this happen in the women's game? I would love to see more examples, if this is indeed common.

And I am not surprised at all by a Hoosier fan's "interpretation" of what happened here.

I would expect that this does not happen often, but is far more likely with Clark, because she is quick-trigger shooting (and making her fair share) from distance more than any player I've seen. Ergo, lots of hard close outs.

And fwiw, every message board complains a lot about refs and "dirty" play by the opposition. I didn't go through your whole game thread, but the IU boards were apoplectic last night over dirty play by Iowa and getting screwed by the referees. The players and coaches? They hugged it out after the game and emphasized their admiration for their opponent. They expect nothing to be given to them easily against top tier opponents.

i mean...she's a full 2 feet away from Clark, who has already shot the ball at the top of her jump.
the ball isn't even in frame, and her hand isn't even up to give the notion she was trying to disrupt the shot.

I don’t think your intentions here were to defend a dirty play, and it’s your team so I get how your view would be influenced……… but here is why you are wrong. IMO of course.

If she was just off balance and falling, the normal reaction would be to extend your arms to catch yourself. She clearly turns and leads with her elbow/shoulder, like you would do on the turn in roller derby. Watch it again and see if you can tell me that is incorrect.

I don’t think the IU coach told the players to injure Clark, but I have zero doubt they were instructed to get into her every chance they could. This one was over the line, again my opinion, and should have been dealt with more harshly.

Dirty. I mean sure can say a rougher foul than your avg one. Intentional I don’t think so. Stuff like this happens. Goes back to the Woodbury eye poking stuff. I do not think she was intentionally trying to hurt Clark and did kind look like she lost balance a little. I mean at that point in a close game giving her 3 shots was a bad foul. it was case of defensive player out of position trying to make up for it contesting a shot closing out poorly off balance.

Seen far worse intentional fouls and dirty plays. Brad Davison and Grayson Allen wrote the books on those ones.

Thanks - this is completely where I am. She was out of position and frantic that Clark was going to bury a three. Put the brakes on but couldn't stop.

Along those lines (and apologies - a bit off-topic) did you guy see Paul Mulcahy stick his foot out to trip Trayce Jackson Davis at the end of the IU/Rutgers game this week? Now that was some next-level Grayson Allen stuff.

Seriously, JFC, be better Iowa fans. Glad Clark wasn’t injured but that did NOT look dirty to me. She just fell into Clark. Sucks we lost, move on!

Not surprised at all that one of the resident trolls disagrees.

If I said it was a clean play, this clown would disagree with that, too.

This guy is indeed insane. At least he is self aware.

He has done that in a few other games as well.

I said it was dirty in the game thread.

I still think it's dirty.

You don't go for a player's legs. Good grief.

Watch:

The issue I have is the angle at which she was moving to get a hand up. Most people if they are coming from the side, they go in front of the shooter, she was never in the position to go in front. It appears she is going at her right shoulder.

I would base intent on the reaction after the play. If it's an accident and you might have just injured the best women's player in the nation, I would be checking to see if she was okay. I didn't see that happen, so it was more of a "don't care what I just did" attitude.

I agree that she went in with a forearm/shoulder. Cheap play.

I know I'm a visitor here, but I don't understand. Are you saying that Grace Berger or Mackenzie Holmes might have been injured on this play too? ;)

She went to the Woodbury school of eye poking.

Agreed, if she truly tripped and was falling then her natural reaction would be to put her hands down to catch herself.

The irony of a Badger fan weighing in on this.

Davison is the dirtiest B1G player of all time.

Here are 14 examples of his "tactics" that go back 5 seasons. Note, that these are examples of WHEN HE GOT CAUGHT.

How Greg Gard or ANY Badger fan can defend this guy is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable.

Dumb ass Davison was hooking and holding, but said it was Kofi who was doing the hooking and holding.

Davison literally told the officials to check the monitors and review it, which they did. But note who ended up with the hook and hold foul and who ended up shooting FTs.

This hook and hold resulted in the player falling and a travel being called. And watch the clown celebrate afterwards.

10 minutes into the game and Brad Davison's feet tripped DeVante' Jones and his elbow happened to find Hunter Dickinson's ribs on a screen.

And another nut punch to Hunter Dickinson, too.

He couldn't help himself as he throws a left to the mouth/face of a Clown player.

I did. That one was more questionable than this. Thing is mulcahy is one of those guys love if on your team hate if opponent. I’m sure lot of fans feel same about Connor. But like play from this game from just playing HS ball I’ve been on both ends where foul was rougher than it should’ve been. It happens.

I mean wasn’t like the play last night was when McHale closed lined Rambo’s preventing a dunk. Funny back in that day just regular foul play on. Which as a Celtics fan I love that highlight and that game.

To me there is a difference; Connor McCaffery is a "love to hate" guy because he is demonstrative and kinda 'chippy'.

But I don't think I've ever seen a Connor McCaffery dirty play.

Mulcahy was subtle, and dirty:

I am pretty sure she stumbled, caught her foot wrong on the floor. Ankle Break by CClark.

I was watching live and saw a full replay. The announcers noticed her stumble.

It could have been bad

Ok I guess if this is your take, but since you are still here can you answer the question?

When you watch it, do you not see her lead with her elbow/shoulder? Honest question.

Also, and be honest, is there anyone here commenting that this was completely unintentional that played at a high level? At least high school varsity. Not discounting anyone’s opinion, just honestly curious.

Slow motion makes people naturally believe intent that doesn't exist. Because to you the player has time to react but in reality they don't. So yeah it looks intentional in slow motion but that doesn't mean it was in real time
