Is this a clean basketball play?

It's not the end of the world, but it happens. Moore-McNeil goes to her eyes and the camera immediately pans to Clark squawking about it. Then both teams are in a timeout.

19:10 mark of the above-attached YouTube video. video.
Watch the replay, there was a second fake with the ball and Clark reacted. Very clearly not intentional in my opinion. Not sure why Clark reacted as I do think she made contact.

Girls bball is so hard to watch
It can be. But it’s pretty amazing to watch/see how much faster Clark is compared to almost everyone else. Not just the physical speed of play but mental. It can cause turnovers at times. So many quick passes to teammates that aren’t in the right place yet, not expecting it or just flat out can’t catch the heat.

Yah shes insane

And I am not surprised at all by your "interpretation" of what happened here.

I would expect that this does not happen often, but is far more likely with Clark, because she is quick-trigger shooting (and making her fair share) from distance more than any player I've seen. Ergo, lots of hard close outs.

And fwiw, every message board complains a lot about refs and "dirty" play by the opposition. I didn't go through your whole game thread, but the IU boards were apoplectic last night over dirty play by Iowa and getting screwed by the referees. The players and coaches? They hugged it out after the game and emphasized their admiration for their opponent. They expect nothing to be given to them easily against top tier opponents.

That can’t be true as many on this board feel there is a B1G conspiracy against the Hawks and that they get the short end of the stick on nearly every call.

I saw it live and you are correct in your analysis of the play. Was a great game to watch and congratulations on the win

Don’t mind Fran he lives in his own world.

FWIW, many on the IU boards feel there is a B1G conspiracy against IU, etc. 😄

Folks are folks my friend. I’ve been to the great state of Iowa many times—love love LOVE Iowa City. One of the truly beautiful and imo underrated college towns in the country.

It’s uncanny how many different sets of fans think they are always getting cheated. Those Gold, Crimson, Black, Blue, Red colored glasses seem to always cloud judgment 🙂

Best of luck going forward!

And by the way, appreciate the reception on this board.

With very, very few exceptions you guys are extremely hospitable and gracious, and the back and forth is respectful.

Kudos and thanks!

Do you lower your shoulder and hit peoples knees when falling? She was trying to take out Clark. You may not have noticed in real time, but I just watched it and her intentions were pretty apparent.
You could certainly "lower your shoulder" if you were falling in that direction. I don't believe that she had "intent" to harm Clark, and I don't see how you can tell "intent" by looking at the replay....

Not trying to understate that it was dangerous. Glad there was no injury because there could have been.

But it absolutely was unintentional. Chloe Moore-McNeil is a junior who has played a lot and has zero technical fouls and zero flagrant fouls during her entire college career. She was up on Clark for most of the game; on this one she had to close out from a distance. When she was closing out Clark stopped quickly and stepped into her shot. Moore-McNeil couldn't avoid Clark's right leg coming forward.
fine, then she should have bodied her and not dropped down and went for her around the knees. don’t care what she had done in the pass. that was not a basketball play. YOU DO NOT GO AFTER A PLAYERS KNEES. plus she continued to roll into Clark. totally uncalled for.

She went to the Woodbury school of eye poking.

Not surprising a thread titled “Is this a clean basketball play?” piqued the interest of a Wisconsin fan.

Correct, you do not “go after” a player’s knees. No one did that.

Also, why are you yelling?

Because it is exactly what I would have done if a player had ever taken a cheap shot an went after my knees. That is just not done and not accepted. Lucky hawk coaches do not allow for retaliation,

For ****s sake she launched herself into Caitlin's legs. It's pretty obvious. Take your Crimson colored glasses off.

And at the 4:20 mark of the third quarter Clark deliberately poked Moore-McNeill in the eyes. And then Clark whined to the refs.

And at the 7:00 mark of the second quarter Clark very similarly “launched” into Moore-McNeill’s legs. It was dangerous and could have injured Moore-McNeill. Happened because there was a pump fake on a three. Gold glasses: an Iowa poster here said the eye poke was justified because Moore-McNeill “raised her shoulder,” not even a pump fake.

And early in the first quarter before things went south Clark hit a three and then stared down the IU bench. So good for her on that one.

But the IU team didn’t whine or blame “a bad game from our post” like Clark did in the post-game. They didn’t stare down the Iowa bench after makes or whine to the refs. By the way, Czinano is pure class and never does any of that either. Neither does Stuelke (sp) or any of the other Iowa players. Clark is the most gifted player on the court, but there’s a reason other teams’ fans don’t appreciate her, and it’s not because she’s good(and she absolutely is). You’ll never see Diamond Miller or Grace Berger get reactions to their attitudes.

So Clark loves the spotlight? When you love the spotlight people notice more than just the one physical play by Clark’s opponent. They notice the whole game.

There are more than few Iowa fans on this board that are extremely gracious and “get it.” If you don’t? That’s your prerogative, but accusing me of “Crimson glasses” when I said the foul on Clark’s 3 was dangerous and arguably should have been a flagrant? Geez.

Guys guys guys, I think the best way to solve our differences here is just to simply have Indiana lose at Iowa the next time they play.

Problem solved, and everyone gets what they want! :D

Maybe you just need glasses because you're blind as ****.

I'm having a change of heart (really!) There may be more to the back and forth between Moore-McNeil and Clark than ordinally "meets the eye." Follow me here and watch the video segment I've attached (please).

Caitlin Clark deliberately poked Chloe Moore-McNeil in the eyes at EXACTLY the 4:20 mark of the third quarter and the 19:10 mark of this video.

Here's what happened;
  1. Moore-McNeil establishes position near the basket and faces Clark.
  2. Clark swipes down at the ball, which Moore-McNeil holds waist high. Clark doesn't get the ball.
  3. Moore-McNeil continues to hold the ball waist high - nothing else changes - the players are in the exact same spot. Then Clark doesn't swipe at the ball - she goes straight to Moore-McNeil's eyes.
  4. Clark then complains to the refs (maybe because Moore-McNeill's retinas fouled Clark's fingers?)
The foul on Clark's three was less than three game minutes after Clark poked Moore-McNeill in the eyes. Was it deliberate? Was it related? If it was, I now see how it escalated.

To that poster that linked all of the Brad Davison stuff and vented that Davison deserves all the crap he got? I hear you, but kinda ironic.

**** you

I don’t mean this in a rude way but to me it legitimately looks like someone who is just uncoordinated AF. Just a clumsy fall. Men’s game, no one is falling down like this except maybe a 7 foot doofus.
Remember when Woodbury kept poking guys in the eyes? People said it was dirty, but I always thought he was just clumsy & had slow reactions.

That is some selective editing. I would invite you guys to watch at least the one second before the clip. CMM lost her balance. Glad there was no injury because it was absolutely dangerous, but if you watch the lead up it was in no way intentional.

Fun game last night. You guys played very well and caught IU on a really off night by Parrish, Garzon, and Moore-McNeil, but Grace Berger steadied us. Hopefully IU will give you a better representation of how we can play next time. The women's teams are a great watch. Kudos to the Iowa Women's team - you guys play really hard and that freshman post is truly outstanding - she's going to be a problem for the whole conference.
Actually, Indiana caught Iowa on a poor night with poor 3-point shooting, more turnovers than normal, and Monica C in early foul trouble which limited her effectiveness. I fully expect Iowa to win the re-match in Iowa City in a few weeks.
