It's official....Fran is out!

I wished for this, but I was veery carefully before I did it. I'm not like some of you reckless willy nilly wishers.

Tom Davis didn't make the NCAA tournament in 3 of the last 5 years before it was decided not to renew his contract. Didnt even make the NIT in one of those years. It was time for him to move on as well.
That may or may not be true…but what’s indisputable is the way Bob did it it was the most asinine thing ever.

I don't think it's a bad thing to appreciate what Fran has done in turning the program around after Lick but also realize it was time for a change. I liked Fran and his devotion to Iowa. His offenses were fun to watch. Obviously his teams were not good defensively. Anyway, I wish him well and thank him for all he did for Iowa.

Now that is some funny stuff.
Post of the day; made me laugh out loud.

Thanks, Moral.
Can we at least wait until Northwestern State beats us in the NCAA tournament before we start talking about firing _______? I still get mad thinking about that loss. I realize that was a Alford team. Basically I'm bundling the last three coaches in my nightmare losses memories.

God I hate the obligatory "Great guy, had his kids backs, they'd go to war for him..." shit.
Great. Who didn't?
Has a coach ever been let go, anywhere, for performance issues, and people said "Can't really feel bad about this one, Coach wasn't a nice guy, didn't have his kids backs, and nobody liked him"?
This, being a good man, mentor, and developing boys into men is a base expectation.
It is similar to me entering my time and approving my employees time each week. The metrics of the projects I own are the majority of how my performance is judged.

Crazy that was 19 years ago. I’m 34 and have been watching really good Iowa basketball teams shit the bed in March my entire life.

Hopefully that trend ends today. It’s a glorious day!

Let’s revisit this thread in 2-3 years and see how people “feel” then. Like Izzo said “be careful what you wish for”.

I was around for the running out of Lute Olson (went on to win a national title- and spare me with the he was out anyway, wanted warm weather, etc.. I was alive and in tune, he lost some tournament games we should have won, it happens, fan base got crazy, oh well and not remotely saying McCaffery is going on to win anything) and Tom Davis (let go after sweet sixteen and again some bad losses etc…ultimately started the fan base down that path…again). I am not saying these were bad or good decisions as we all know what happened next. I expect similar/same results until we finally get on good footing again, then the same peeps will be calling for that coach’s head if subparness (I know not a word) reappears. So this is Beth’s moment of truth to not let that history repeat itself….again, let’s revisit in 2-3 years.
Very different situation now with NIL and the portal. You can have a good roster and the next year you have 75% turnover. We haven't scratched the surface yet with NIL or portal. Cannot compare the two eras.

How did that stare down with Beth go, Fran???

IMO I'm guessing that it didn't go well. Official language from U of I was that Fran was dismissed (they took the high road- could have said Fran was fired). If they came to some set of terms they would have said- came to a mutual agreement. For Beth- it's time to move forward.

An argument could be made that we played better after Owens injury so there's a good chance of three wins wouldn't have happened
You could also argue that if Fran had ever decided to emphasize defense he would have surpassed 300 quite a while ago.

?? Semantics. Dismissed means FIRED, terminated, cut loose. Take your pick. Theres no high road there because they didn't say fired.

Good job, Beth. Hey Izzo, hire your boy Fran as an assistant since he's so good - put your money where your mouth is. Oh, hire Lick, too, as your assistant since you think so highly of him, too. There, now you'll have 2 great assistant coaches that you luv...

It’s fascinating to me how Fran and his future daughter-in-law are the two very reasons why, today, there is Iowa Basketball, and then there’s Iowa Men’s Basketball.

If she is smart, no. I’ve always been impressed, with the exception of one blip, with her ability to remain classy and neutral. That one exception being when she accepted an award then stated her white privilege was why she was great. Dumb statement.
She didn't say that. She said up front "I want to say that I've earned every single thing..."

So for you to say that she "stated her white privilege is why she was great" is completely off the mark and just not true.

But she also acknowledged that she has had the benefit of many things, yes "privileges," that a large number of non-white athletes in her league have not had... a loving mom AND dad in the home, food security, housing security, financial security, access to a top tier high school education, access to top tier coaching and athletic opportunities without having to worry about cost.

She's absolutely right to acknowledge that a huge number of professional athletes have had to overcome a lot more challenges and barriers to success than she did. That's all she was saying.
