It's official....Fran is out!

🤡 is having your 6’5 son with minimal athleticism and terrible shooting start at the 4 over a future lottery pick.

Fran may be a great guy, but choosing to play his sons over NBA talent was unforgivable IMO. Couple that with the fact he could never get a point guard of consequence or get his teams to play tough defense were the final nails.

Iowa needed to move on. The fan base was bored and not attending games.

God I hate the obligatory "Great guy, had his kids backs, they'd go to war for him..." shit.
Great. Who didn't?
Has a coach ever been let go, anywhere, for performance issues, and people said "Can't really feel bad about this one, Coach wasn't a nice guy, didn't have his kids backs, and nobody liked him"?
Steve Alford, (although he left before he could get axed). Pretty much everyone thought he was an ASS, and he bled Crimson and cream. He and Tanya hated Iowa, but like the $$$$..

I don’t have the hatred many on this board have for Fran, but it was time. His antics on the sideline don’t matter to me. It’s about wins and losses. Fran just hasn’t delivered the wins. He hasn’t lead Iowa deeper into the NCAA tournament or improved our position in the Big Ten.
Best of luck to him moving forward, but it was time to turn the page.

I want a new coach, but I am slightly saddened for Fran. He is a good man.
I find I'm feeling some of that myself. I'm ready for change, without a doubt, but a part of me finds it bittersweet.
I understand, I really do.

Fran will be 66 in a couple of months. Good time to retire for most. Most of his family is in Indianapolis. If it was a "non-negotiated" termination he gets a few million in traveling money.

And, now the pressure is off.

I would have prefer he retire, but then he would have walked away from his buyout.

I see this as a win/win.

Absolutely no surprise there are shots fired by them on the way out. I expect more to come as well. Everything negative was always somebody else's fault according to them and they were quick to run to the twitters and make excuses. So over the whole family ✌️
His brothers abandoned the dad before Iowa did. Gove them shit

Anyone upset that the Hawkeye dude on the Pat McAfee show talked about how white Iowa’s basketball team is? I guess it’s only a problem when it’s @curtisj157.
The new coach needs to give walking papers to most current scholarship players. We need an upgrade at every position. I will not be upset at all if the team looks more like a basketball team in the future instead of the J. Crew company picnic team we’ve been throwing out on the court every year.

No. DeVries at any cost.
I would go the direction of DeVries IF it were between the 2. I am not a fan of a slower paced game......even though Ben racked up the wins. I think in the Big 10 you have to be able to score AND play defense. Even MSU had plenty of offensive games in the 80s but they have that ability to drive you nuts with their defense. If it IS Ben it will be interesting to see if he brings the same style of play or if THAT style was right for Drake, their players and the conference.

someone should start a thread with all the tweets by the assistants and family throwing shade on the way out…i imagine it could go a couple pages
Fran's family, assistant coaches, and players are going to be loyal to him, and they're going to be disappointed. We shouldn't be surprised to see some negative reactions. For the most part, I think we can give these folks some grace as they process this news. A clown or sad-face emoji or a quick comment isn't anything to get worked up about.

That said, if anyone goes scorched-earth, that's a different story.

Wonder how much stuff was thrown at the walls in the offices at Carver today? Perhaps they medicated him before delivering the news.

Fran was an OK coach. He did an OK (not great) job in the regular season and a terrible job in the post season. I don't think it's great that he was fired. But it was past time.
He got much longer than most coaches do in his line of work given the post season performance of his teams.
Unlike when that complete asshat alford left, I'm not overjoyed that Fran is gone. This isn't personal, it's a business decision. Fran was a drag on the performance of the business. When that happens it's time for a change.

There's a saying in business and any organization: you don't want to be the person who immediately follows the failure. You want to be the person who follows the person who immediately followed the failure. Fran was the "gap" hire who sadly was allowed to stay for 15 years.
Actually - the saying is you don't want to be the person who follows a legend, but the person who follows the person who followed the legend. You always want to follow a failure. You don't want to immediately follow greatness.

Will Caitlin Clark support the family and publicly question the firing? Will be interesting.
If she is smart, no. I’ve always been impressed, with the exception of one blip, with her ability to remain classy and neutral. That one exception being when she accepted an award then stated her white privilege was why she was great. Dumb statement.

I don't understand how anyone was surprised here. It is "life in the fast lane".

The typical dumb shit apologists here will continue to bitch but, frankly, let’s hope that KF is right behind FM. In today’s world, especially in P4-5, just hanging around doesn’t get the job done. Both of these guys should have been shown the door a decade back, especially KF. Great work, Beth. All of the I told ya sos will be on your ass next year when we rebuild, but 15 years is plenty. Let’s plant a new flag in Hawkeye athetics, one that says we shouldn’t apologize for who Iowa is, but become the dawn of a new age. Good on you!

At least Alford took the New Mexico job and saved the university some of the buyout. He proved the Peter Principle when he took the UCLA job, rising to his level of incompetence.

He took Iowa for over 30M (minus taxes and agent). Results were sub-par and empty seats. The Athletic Department gets to start over, lets hope they can generate some energy like WBB and Wrestling.

Yes. Yes they have.

Let’s revisit this thread in 2-3 years and see how people “feel” then. Like Izzo said “be careful what you wish for”.

I was around for the running out of Lute Olson (went on to win a national title- and spare me with the he was out anyway, wanted warm weather, etc.. I was alive and in tune, he lost some tournament games we should have won, it happens, fan base got crazy, oh well and not remotely saying McCaffery is going on to win anything) and Tom Davis (let go after sweet sixteen and again some bad losses etc…ultimately started the fan base down that path…again). I am not saying these were bad or good decisions as we all know what happened next. I expect similar/same results until we finally get on good footing again, then the same peeps will be calling for that coach’s head if subparness (I know not a word) reappears. So this is Beth’s moment of truth to not let that history repeat itself….again, let’s revisit in 2-3 years.

we finished 15th place in league

it's hard to imagine a coach doing much worse than that

FFS, Lute Olson wasn't run out. As for replacing Fran. He had a 15 year run. Time to see what somebody else can do.

sure, if it doesn't work, you get another coach. That is how most schools operate

2-3 years is exactly how it should be. Screw these life-time contracts that Iowa loves to make.

If its a lame duck coach...try again. And then try again. We could have had 3-4 other coaches in the span of Fran. And we wouldn't have been any worse off from a NCAA tourney success standpoint. That should be the new measuring stick. I don't care about being middle Big standings if it means a shit post season record. Find a guy that gives me a higher ceiling

And if it never happens? Then we are no different than the last 30 years. I'll accept that

Dumping Tom Davis was the first in a long line of complete failures that have crippled the program.

I don't see how any Hawkeye fan could be grief stricken about this. He got twice as long as most coaches would get with his results. Add that to the nepotism with his boys and it's long overdue. He put his kids over the program, period. I just wish this would've happened years ago, but the timing could be perfect if we get the Drake coach. The curse of Iowa basketball is about to come to an end.
It feels so foreign to have an actual AD doing actual AD things.
