It's official....Fran is out!

Well, I am not sad for Iowa BBall and hope McCaffery lands on his feet. I have always rooted for the Hawks not the head coach in any sport. So, when a coach can't bring home a few highlights and realistically compete with other BIG teams, it is time for change. JMO

FFS, Lute Olson wasn't run out. As for replacing Fran. He had a 15 year run. Time to see what somebody else can do.
And Davis wasn’t let go “after” the Sweet 16. It was known the entire season he wouldn’t be back.

That’s what you saw/believe, the noise was loud, FFS you can believe what you want. You do you.

It’s about the name on the front of the jersey not the back. That’s what we say about players. The same is true for coaches. I wish Fran all he happiness in the world and success in his future endeavors. He just hasn’t had the success at Iowa we all hoped he would. We gave him a lot more time than most places would have given him. It’s time for a change.
We are very close to the point where no one can say, “be careful what you wish for.” We were one game away from missing the Big Ten tournament. I guess we could have lost that game, but it really doesn’t make any difference. Whether it was one meaningless game or two, Iowa’s season was ending this week.

Let’s revisit this thread in 2-3 years and see how people “feel” then. Like Izzo said “be careful what you wish for”.

I was around for the running out of Lute Olson (went on to win a national title- and spare me with the he was out anyway, wanted warm weather, etc.. I was alive and in tune, he lost some tournament games we should have won, it happens, fan base got crazy, oh well and not remotely saying McCaffery is going on to win anything) and Tom Davis (let go after sweet sixteen and again some bad losses etc…ultimately started the fan base down that path…again). I am not saying these were bad or good decisions as we all know what happened next. I expect similar/same results until we finally get on good footing again, then the same peeps will be calling for that coach’s head if subparness (I know not a word) reappears. So this is Beth’s moment of truth to not let that history repeat itself….again, let’s revisit in 2-3 years.
Happily. Fran didn't take us to a single Sweet Sixteen in any of his 15 years as HC, including seasons when he had some of the best players in the nation. I can't imagine another coach having a run like that.

??? So your making a comment like you support Izzo's claim, "be careful what you wish for" and then at the same time not saying this or any of the others were bad decisions. Way to cover your bases. Frankly whatever happens it was time to go in another direction, so theres no need to second guess regardless of what happens. Fran has looked disinterested all year, (until getting tossed last night) hmmm..Surely keeping on with Fran would have been the very definition of insanity, too "keep doing what you doing, and your going to keep getting what your getting......

Whoever it is I just hope the days of rewarding consistent mediocrity with extension after extension are over.
Absolutely.
This is a turn the page moment on endless, ridiculous contract extensions.
Unless the next guy comes in and wins a natty in the middle of his time at Iowa, I expect there will be more than one head coach over the next 15 years. And that's OK. Longevity for the sake of longevity isn't a great thing.

You might have been clued in back then but everything I heard from people in the know was that Lute was tired of the shit officiating in the Big Ten and never getting the calls and also the fact that he had Isaiah Thomas coming to Iowa and Bobby Knight swooped in at the last second and stole him away. So Lute wanted to win Big and NCAA championships and he thought there was too much to fight against being at Iowa.

Back then Iowa had even higher academic rules than some Big Ten teams. So three strikes and he was out to AZ.

If she is smart, no. I’ve always been impressed, with the exception of one blip, with her ability to remain classy and neutral. That one exception being when she accepted an award then stated her white privilege was why she was great. Dumb statement.
She NEVER said it was WHY she was great. She said it was a mitigating factor. Basically that she might have received a leg up coming from a fairly well off background. Theres probably some truth to that, and doesn't really need to be disected further..

What does "lands on his feet" mean exactly? The guys made probably 30 MILLION $ coaching basketball just at Iowa, and we'll be paying him another several million NOT to coach for us in the future. I'm sure Fran and the Mac clan will be okay......

The new coach needs to give walking papers to most current scholarship players. We need an upgrade at every position. I will not be upset at all if the team looks more like a basketball team in the future instead of the J. Crew company picnic team we’ve been throwing out on the court every year.
Yeah, the next coach has to be able to convince urban black kids to come to Iowa City. Has to. If the next coach scours the sales counters at J Crew and the Pottery Barn for players like Fran did, then there is no point in changing coaches. Defense and rebounding might improve, but you’re going to see Todd Lickliter style offenses. That translates to more mediocrity.

I would love to get interested in Iowa basketball again, but the program has to be somewhat relevant on the national stage. If they never win a conference championship or make it to the Final Four, oh well. But at least have 1-2 seasons in a five-year block where Iowa is a legitimate top 25/15 team in the country and has the potential to win a few games in March.

None of that is happening when your rotation consists of 6-7 white guys.

Might want to look at Websters definition of Envy....

Wonderful...and just who is the rascist??

There are rumblings he is interested in the open coaching vacancy in Hickory, IN. after the long time coach had moved on...

Thats right up there with the stupidest posts ever on this forum, and thats REALLY saying something, so congrats, I guess. What Fran gets paid has no effect on me whatsoever, and we'll pay the next coach a bunch on money as well, so its not relevant. My comment was someone posting, "I hope Fran lands on his feet", is laughable. The dude is 66, (my age) and close to retiring. He's been paid a kings ransom to coach basketball, and we're going to pay him another couple of years salary to move on. What EXACTLY does he need to "land on his feet" from? NO one in his extended family would ever need to work another day in their life. Good Lord.....

Agreed
No need to.
Not any of her business
She won't make a statement other than perhaps to wish Fran well. Do we really think though, that the multi million $$ mega superstar basketball Taylor Swift pal celebrity GOAT is going to end up with a guy that is making 100k as the assistant coach at Local University? Conner is like the small town guy that dated the hottest chick in High School, but now we are in college, and she has unlimited options.

I heard that Elon Musk's DOGE (pronounced dodgy) had something to do with Fran’s “dismissals” after McCafferty couldn't come up with 5 bullet points. No link.

Can't disagree.
She will express condolences to Fran in person or in private conversation. It will not be seen by anyone in the media.
As for Connor, Love is a strange animal you know.

Good man but it will be nice to see defense for the first time in 15 years

we finished 15th place in league

it's hard to imagine a coach doing much worse than that
So much this .
And ZERO sweet sixteen appearances in 15 years!! This is the moment where @curtisj157 needs to post that list of teams who have a sweet sixteen appearance since Iowa did it last!
Damn people it’s been circling the drain why in the hell would u say let’s see what happens in 2-3 years?? 🤣🤣
