IU bench 28 - Iowa bench 0

That and missing 10 free throws and you have no chance to win on the road...Gesell lost his mind after the game was tied at 50 and that was all she wrote.

Baer played okay defensively. I would have liked to see him try to block a couple drives since no one was contesting dribble drive at the basket. Missed his one shot.

Uhl was bad and Ellingson did not live up to his no mistakes guy role.

The glaring issue tonight was Baer's defense. The kid I know is a walk-on, but wow he did a lot of "ole laying" and did not play like himself. While I think he does good against the lower level teams, @ maryland and @ IU he has struggled.

But tonight the bench really failed to show up and I hope FRAN hammers that home. The Bench was not ready to play and IU (give them credit they shot lights out) from 3 in the first half. But Iowa's bench played poor on both ends.

The glaring issue is how average Clemmons and Gesell are for seniors with so much experience. They just aren't very talented. Championship teams usually have elite guards.

Bench was 0-4 shooting, 0-2 on free throws, 3 rebounds, 1 steal and 2 turnovers. 4 guys combined for 31 minutes. Starters averaged 33.8 minutes in this game.

I didn't know it was that bad.

But it was bad.

Backup kids looked timid and unsure of themselves especially in the 1st half.

We came back and lost our poise again in the 2d half.

A team we could have beaten.

Yep. Up 4 with 8:30. Then MG did as he usually does when the game is close...turnover, air ball 10 foot jumper, over penetrate and turnover. He simply cannot be trusted at crunch time.

Not sure what you were watching. All things considered, Mike was probably our best player on the court tonight. First turnover was a pick and roll where Woody didn't look for the pass that would have been a layup. Second turnover, Mike did dribble too low and got caught. I didn't think he was really out of bounds, and he should have planted the ball off the little sub for IU. Otherwise, Mike played extremely well. He was pulling up for mid-range shots, and hit several big shots that brought us back and then kept us in the game. He even made free throws down the stretch. He missed the last one on purpose, but it didn't bounce out enough for Woody to get it. Mike was the primary defender on Yogi, not Sapp, after the first few minutes of the game, and I thought he did an outstanding job.

We lost because we were outhustled on the boards in the first half, missed free throws, and the bench gave us very little. It wasn't Pete's best game either, but Yogi is like a little pit bull on defense.

I didn't see Baer's defense being a problem. I thought Uhl missed some opportunities and I thought Fran gave up on Wagner much too fast. Sometimes you have to let players play through and I think Fran was just too tight with the bench tonight.

I thought Crean forced Gessell and Clemmons to beat them tonight. They where leaving them constantly on rotations and for really one of the few times this year a team was successful in implementing that gameplan. I thought we'd see more teams have success playing Iowa this way but Jok and Uthoff have been too good. I thought Gessell's and Clemmons lack of outside shooting really hurt tonight. On the other end Gessell and Clemmons defense was outstanding in the second half.

And Brady Ellingson is not high d-1 material. Sorry to single a player out but this guy will not get better. Too slow and limited game. Brady's dead weight.

I tried my hardest to find a .gif of Jackie Moon booting the ball into the stands from Semi-Pro. I actually said after the pass to nobody, "and some lucky fan goes home with a game ball."

But lets not hammer the kid on this game. The entire bench and select starters at different parts of the game could have been replaced by golf carts. And I'm talking about the old school 3 wheel ones that don't even have a steering wheel, just that weird shared bar in the middle that easily roll over and crash.

Mike had a decent overall game, but he 100% without question turned the momentum completely around with 3 horrible plays in a row. Their big lead was gone and then some, the crowd was taken out of it and we had things going our way, then "bad Mike" showed up and we never recovered.

We do a better job at the free throw line and all the bad moments potentially go away, but the combination of the two was disastrous.

While Brady was only on the floor for a minute in tonight's game, he failed to become engaged in the moment. This is his second year in the program. Brady's stats have fallen way off the radar since the start of the B1G season. Brady is 5 of 15 field goal attempts and 2 of 12 from the 3 ( 33.3% and 16.7% respectfully) in 12 Big Ten contest and he has averaged just under 7 minutes a game. Brady is contributing less quality relief time as the season rolls on. Brady has not hit a wall but been shown to be deficient at this level. Williams can at least dribble drive and pass and play defense.
Williams deserves more minutes.

It may be harsh but it is a fair ( and correct) assessment of Brady's future value to this program. Brady is a lower level player. And if the insider news I have heard about Moss and Hutton are correct, Brady won't be #1 or #2 at the SG position next year.

Brady slept with your girlfriend, didn't he?

Agree 100%. Mikes not even close to the reason we lost but when we were up 4 and the crowd was out of it and Indiana couldn't get a stop and they were having trouble hitting shots, Mikey made 3 horrible plays in a row and that was the turning point. The reason we lost was because we got out hustled and out worked on the boards and we left lots of points out there with all the missed lay-ups. I think there was 4-5 possessions where we had 3-4 shots at a layup or shot and we didn't convert those. You make a few of those and shoot 70% from the line and bam theres 10 points we left out there. Plus the bench gave us nothing tonight. I thought Baer did a ok job on defense but that was about it, Uhl was all out of sorts tonight.

Frightening to think of the drop off we can expect next year as Jok is the only returning starter, and all others returning next year get completely shut out in games like this.

Our bench players are inexperienced and it shows on the road. They are much more comfortable at home, that is the case with many teams.

They out played Yogi

I know at one time Yogi was 2 for 11. Although, he did make his free throws at the end of the game. Sometimes I think a team can play their guts out and if you don't make free throws it's not gonna happen. Yes, our subs were off a bit and as one poster said didn't get many minutes to accomplish much. Again, we will improve and move on.

QUOTE]

I remember two plays that you are probably thinking about, but not a third. I think one was a bad mistake, where he got trapped down low and the zebra said he was out of bounds. On his other turnover, Mike saw Woody roll to the basket and threw what would have been a nice pass over the defender, if Woody had been watching for it. Not sure what the third horrible mistake was, because Mike was nails on the defensive end and hit all but one shot where he wasn't just stuck with the ball at the end of the shot clock. The only free throw he missed was after he got clocked by Hartman on the break away.

I wish some other players had played more than 30 minutes of quality basketball, but as the PG, Mike seems to be easy to focus on. I believe Mike made fewer mistakes than any other Iowa player in this game, yet he is the only starter that seems to get singled out.

I think the crowd really shook up our bench and they were tight. Fortunately, we won't face a crowd quite like that again this year.

It may have been said earlier, but it doesn't help when guys of their bench are making shots from the rafters either.
