Iowa had been pursueing Brock for over a year, visits were made, situations were disclosed. Brock continued to stay uncommitted. Iowa starts developing a relationship with another RB. Again Brock was in the drivers seat to commit, didn't happen. Iowa showed interest in Brock the whole timeline. ND came calling, ISU came calling, MN came calling.....still no Brock commit to Iowa.

The low down: Iowa needed a top quality back, they couldn't gamble the fact that IF Brock went elsewhere, they'd be left with limited returning RB's. Goodson was the answer. fantasic RB. Big ten calibur runner. Hits hard and runs through blocks. Goodson showed interest and 'soft verballed'. Brock, up until this time, was still gathering schollie offers and not committing. IOWA cannot afford to gamble. Because Block is more of a Big 12 RB (terrible defenses there) ISU might be a better mix. Going to ISU the problem is...the hawks defense is as fast as he is and will be his toughest defensive test.
Do not count out ND or Purdue in the Brock late offer picture.

I'm pretty sure Purdue backed off of him like we did, and that ND isn't commitable just yet.

I thought we were taking to back’s. Was it did you go kid that changed our situation? I would’ve taken both personally. I’m really happy we have Goodson though. He seems to have that Wadley type ability but could possibly get up to that 200pd mark

OP- do you KNOW this is what happened? And does anyone KNOW Brock has character concerns? I have not read anywhere that he does. I was thrilled Goodson committed. But other than Bell, I don't see another recruit out there I would take a commitment over Brock. He is pretty darned good.

Iowa recruited Brock as their #1 RB for a long time. I wish they had room to take him, but they already have 2 backs as verbalized commits. Even though a couple are position moves and medical issues, we have 7 underclassmen RBs now. Adding Goodson makes it 8 and Sargent makes 9. I may be mistaken, but I believe 7 is their normal allotment target, but usually want them more spread out. Can not have 1/10 of your total scholarships dedicated to one position. Just a numbers issue.

Truly hate that we will likely have to play against him as I think he is very talented and would have been a heck of a player for Iowa.

I think this guy commits to Northwestern or Minny. NU would have a pretty good duo with the QB transfer from Clemson - Hunter Johnson (who was #1 QB recruit last year) and RB J. Brock. But who ever he commits to may have a battle to keep him. I think this kid wants to lock up a spot and look for a better fit if it comes. That is one reason, I think the Hawkeye coaches were smart to move on from Brock. I think he is a de-commitment waiting to happen. Go Hawks! Goodson is the real deal and will stay committed.

Honestly, the Iowa State thing seems pretty weird. The way that both Purdue and Iowa cancelled his visit, and the way that the Purdue coaches "liked" his tweet that he wasn't visiting anymore makes a person wonder if there is more to the story. Can't help but wonder if Northwestern and Minny are still on the table as well.

Your assertion makes absolute no sense. If Brock wanted to lock up a spot and keep looking, he had many opportunities, especially having been to Iowa City 5 times. The kid is making his decision on his timeline and no one elses.

I’ve got to think that the Minny offer is still on the table given the number of offers they produce, though we shall see. Those details usually come out after a recruit selects another school and all of the opposing trolls jump in saying they pulled he offers :)

I think we can, without a doubt, say that Brock no longer has an offer from Iowa or PU.

If Brock still has a Northwestern offer he has good reasons to take it. Their football teams play tough and win a lot of games, very good coach, impressive new facilities with a view of Lake Michigan. Not to mention a diploma from Northwestern.

Were I Mr. Brock I’d jump on Nortwestern.

And as a Hawkeye fan who just saw a 4 star RB flyaway, let us not forget that great Iowa 4* Greg Garmon from the class of 2012. Until you get them on the field you really don’t know what you have as a player.

I’d bet my money on Goodson. As this has played out, I’d bet your money on Mr. Brock, though I wish him well.

I would think ISU looks less attractive to him with the signing of the kid from Wichita whose name escapes me at the moment. Cyclones have a bunch of good young RBs.

My question I’m hearing sargeant was a trade for Harrell doesn’t that mean we still have a slot.. unless they think Evans will stick or toks will come back!! Or Harrell isn’t leavong

I hate ISU as well but it’s not a bad landing spot. Campbell is a really good young coach and they do run the ball pretty solidly. Personally I was hoping if any the ND offer would pull him away from all our rivals haha

I’ve been saying character issues forever, it’s rumored that he asked for money. Don’t kill the messenger, just a commits parent

Yeah, if we are gonna pay for a recruit let’s budget and pay for some 5 Star WR’s and maybe a punter. This guys offer list doesn’t exactly scream “pay me”....... or else I will go to ISU, MN, or NW. But never know with kids I guess.

This might be the most butt hurt thread of all time. It is almost palpable.

If he commits to I State,......does it feel any better, or just gets worse?

If NW, is the sphincter more acceptable?

How so clone boy? Iowa backed off because Goodson gave them a solid verbal and Brock appears to be playing for the best deal, as opposed to looking for the right fit.

Good luck to the kid, but no sleep lost here.

Making your decision on your own time line is fine, but schools have their timeline as well, and I believe young Mr Brock is going to end up with his second or third choice since his first choice was removed for him. At this point if I were Brock, I would commit and get a scholarship locked up somewhere, but I would keep my eyes and ears open, which I personally believe he will. You know come December teams like Michigan and Ohio state will be looking for their plan B players, and Brock could end up shipping out of town on a plan B. I think I would be nervous if I were the team he commits to knowing that 2 of his final 5 picks pulled there offers, because now your not sure if you are the team he really wanted, or just a scholly lock.

So you may get a guy we backed off of, and somehow you feel good. Funny stuff. I do give Campbell credit, for a program that can't even get Lazard drafted, it's amazing they're able to get anyone to commit. Kudos. Is it 4 years now or 5 with no guys getting drafted?

I would think that eating the crap off of the buffet that IOWA didn’t want would be a more fitting analogy. And sometimes when you eat like crap, your butt suffers.

I don't think Iowa backed off of him so much as took Goodson's commitment first because it was available first. I think they liked both about equally but the certainty of Goodson now was better than maybe Brock later. Either way, I think they valued them similarly

The more I see and read about both, I'm convinced Goodson is the better of the two.

Certainly a better culture fit, also gives us a shifty back who can catch the football out of the backfield. I'm comfortable with the decision by our coaches for sure.
I loved the story written about how he has had the chip on his shoulder mentality throughout his youth and HS career as well.. has the “Iowa mentality” already.

I would buy this until you read both of their interviews or approach to the process. Tyler Goodson is not only a guy who carried his team to a 7A title in Georgia (Listen to the announcers in the playoff say “you don’t change your formula, you continue to give the ball to Tyler Goodson”), but he embodies IOWA’s culture with his interest in children’s charities and a work ethic that his coach also evangelizes.

IMHO, we hit a home run. That said, all of the other factors (pay for play, etc.) being non-existent, I would have loved to take both. Given our current sophomore class of RB’s, we could only take one. I’m ecstatic with the one we got.

It didnt hurt that the entire secondary will be going to college Blue Bloods.

I don’t think Brock was ever Iowa’s #1 target at RB. Goodson’s official visit was scheduled months ahead of Brock’s for a reason. Coaches liked Goodson more, and may have put a little pressure on him to decide as Brock’s visit approached. Just my guess.

Wow, you see, read, and interpret the world wholly different than normal folks. Hawk envy has you bad, sister. Don't say it doesn't, you are here on a Hawkeye board. You couldn't pay me to visit Clownland.

Something happened with Brock and Iowa. I don't presume to know what it was and there is a lot of speculation on here that I would bet is made up. Goodson is a quality player Iowa would be happy to get every year. Brock is that caliber, too. If he indeed did something shady, kudos to the coaches for parting ways with him. If he was holding out to make his decision and they got impatient, bad on them unless they have 3-4 players with his ability they are saving spots for. There is room for another playmaker in this class, regardless what RB numbers look like now. History has shown us repeatedly we can never have enough good RBs. I really hope he doesn't score the winning TD against the Hawks in a future game.
