Jackson

Yes, I agree....when a $4million/yr coach breaks his employment contract and takes a better coaching opportunity, no problem. Jackson from modest upbringing has chance to win the lottery and that is not okay? I'm going to miss seeing him play for us, but darned if he didn't earn his money with his skills/hard work/athleticism.
Good point! I have to respect Frost....at least he's going to finish out his season with his team! Many of them don't even seem to finish of the year.
Yes, Jackson was fun to watch and GL to him(well...depending where he plays :D )

I suspect that some debating players getting paid more than a scholarship are IU grads or current students who are taught socialism and as socialists feel all athletes should share equally in all the income those athletes generate. Lots of Bernie Sanders believers here at Iowa.

What does Indiana have to do with this?

King was going to drop in the draft regardless...his size and speed were less than ideal, and he struggled badly at the Senior Bowl. Those things were going to affect his draft position no matter when he entered. His skills were really refined and in retrospect wouldn’t really have benefitted from coming back.

Jackson, on the other hand, has great length and seems to have really good athleticism. That’s not going to change. However, he is not as technically sound as King and has work to do in zone coverage and run support. He could still be a first rounder because of his cover ability, but if he comes back and cleans up a few things he could be the first corner drafted.

I think you might be able to get some idea by watching how Iowa recruits on defense for the next month or so. I'd bet KF/PP have a good idea on what JJ will do.

Wow. Really.
you think based on what they think he does they increase/decrease efforts recruiting talent?

Sorry but this post is just absurd!
ncaa basically forces them to play for 3 years while paying them nothing and you think the players are egotistical leeches?
That is nuts.....
Bull! they get an education worth over a quarter million dollars if you factor in out I of state tuition and all the free amenities

Not sure if you're serious but if so I think all he means is whether or not they start chasing more D backs after it looked like they were done recruiting Dbs...

so if you think all their hard work and effort equals that out than fine but if they leave before they graduate 4 years than that's not right ... I stand corrected on Jackson he did pay his dues and my apologies but the point I made is clear ... leave before you graduate and shame on you

Kings main reason for dropping was getting schooled by everyone at the senior bowl not his senior year

If you leave early you get no respect from me... honor your commitment or I'll call you out... tired of these egotistical leaches skimming money from Athletic coffers than bolting for an early payday. You play till you graduate 4 years...

Nile Kinnick is not a fan of Riley Reiff, Bulaga, Sash, Spievey, Shonn Greene or anyone else who left early.
Also, as others have noted, he will graduate in the spring...

In 2017, with all we know about head injuries and how quickly a career can end, I don't blame anyone who wants to get paid while they can. The lifespan of an NFL career is short. The average NFL career is about 3 years... If someone has an opportunity to make money earlier, go for it.

There have been a huge number of players than have left college early and gone undrafted the last few years. I don't want to see Josh do that but it is his decision, not any of ours.

Recruiting by position, you freaking moron!

I'd say "stick to HROT", but you suck there, also.

Not only that but for every year of service in the NFL, they receive $5,640 dollars monthly. They can start pulling from that at age 55. A first round draft pick will get a minimum guaranteed signing bonus of $5 million plus base salary. If Jackson invests wisely, he won't have to work too much or at all beyond that rookie contract.

I hope he skips it if that’s what’s best for his prospects. Only he and his close (hopefully competent) advisors can decide.

He’s done MORE than enough to justify his scholarship. Go get paid, young man.

NileKinnick1938: are you not aware that he IS in his 4th year and will graduate in May? Unless he takes his final semester off in order to go train for the combine.

He has paid his dues and will forever be beloved by our Hawkeye nation for his contributions to that epic beat down of OSU this year as well as the whole year of excellence.

Someone also referenced that Dez was going to be a 1st round pick on here and cited an article. Well, every year you can track that about 90 Kids get mentioned as a possible first round pick. So, ultimately, those 90 end up being your 1st 3 rounds. Every site I tracked showed Dez as a late 2nd round to early 3rd round pick that year.

I haven’t started tracking them closely this year, but he is being mentioned as a possible 1st round pick, obviously. The one draft site I really trust is Waltersfootball.com. Their mock has JJ in the middle of the second round.

If this were my son, I would tell him to finish his degree in May, but declare for the draft. Continue training with coach Doyle on your speed and the NFL teams will all be there to time you on your 40 during pro day. Tell the NFL teams that you will give them 100% attention and effort and will report to mini-camp the day after you walk across the stage with your diploma in hand. I suspect NFL GMs would respect the hell out of that.

According to KF he has no idea what JJ will do and he doesn't tell them what to do. I also doubt it will affect who they recruit. Already lots of young corners in the pipeline. rugamba, OJ, Hankins, Harrell, Creamer, Boswell, Turner, and incoming Johnson, Roberts 2018. and Tracy 2019. That is 10 guys that are currently sophs or below. .

There's just so much stupid in this post it's hard to know where to start. Athletic scholarships aren't guaranteed for 4 years. They're awarded for 1 year and then renewed annually. So no, "you play till you graduate 4 years" is just wrong and dumb. Guess what happens if a player gives his all and ends up with a career-ending injury? Yeah, that scholarship is gone. Many of these kids are dirt poor. If they can come in, play 3 years and contribute to their program's success not to mention bring in gobs of $$$ for their university, and then leave for the draft where they'll make the kind of money that will benefit their family for generations to come, you're a ****ing dumbass to call them out for doing that. You've never been in a position to turn down a multi-million dollar contract. And if you were, I'm pretty sure your self-righteous principles would melt away pretty goddam fast. To call these kids who come from nothing and just want to take a guaranteed opportunity to change their family's life "egotistical leaches skimming money from Athletic coffers than bolting for an early payday" is pretty despicable. **** your fandom and holier-than-thou "play till you graduate" BS. When you're in their position, get back to us. Until then STFU.

Hey STFU yourself douchbag ... if you leave early you do not have my respect ... I honor my commitments period... yes they renew yearly but it's guaranteed renewal unless they violate major code of conduct or academic rules name one athlete who had his scholarship pulled at Iowa for any reasons than the above ... they are not going to pull your scholly because you got hurt...

Honor your committment you are expected to stay 4 years than do it

If somebody wants to leave early for a better money making venture then good on em imo....just like a coach would leave for a better spot...it’s up to them if they wanna take the chance to leave without a diploma and come back to pay for it later...if you think there is that much loyalty in the real world then you need to wake the eff up Jack. I feel sorry for ya.

FYI

The Big Ten announced Wednesday that all of its institutions will grant athletic scholarships for the entire term of an athlete's enrollment and allow some athletes who leave school to return and finish their degrees on scholarship.

May want to do some homework on things.

I wonder how much Josh may aspire to become a two time Thorpe winner? That would be neat imo;)
(Yes, needs 1 first....I get it)

People who want college players to stay and not get paid are truly an enigma to me. If you aren't in a major bowl and are projected to go 1st/2nd round, I don't blame you for a second for not playing in the bowl.

The Pinstripe Bowl is not worth any risk. Senior year isn't worth it either.

The goal of going to college is to develop and get a good job.
Anyone who can leave early and be a first round draft pick qualifies as a good job. Earning $2 million dollars in the first year with multiple guaranteed years is more than 99% of graduates are going to make in their first 20 years of school.
This is the definition of excelling in school and excellence from the University of Iowa in preparing someone from the job market.
However, the day that someone skips a game/bowl to leave early, that is breaking a commitment to the team that is giving you the training to get that job.

For those who complain about players being undercompensated and socialism, Title IV is the law. Football is basically legally required to pay for one scholarship in a women's sport for each of its scholarships. Very few women's sports in the country are even close to break even. Would you rather have an athletic department with 2 mens sports getting paid highly and all women's teams, or each athlete "comparably compensated" offering opportunities across a spectrum of interest?

Sorry but this post is just absurd!

That is nuts.....
A full ride scholly for 3-4 years is equivalent to 'getting paid nothing'? That's nuttier than anything Nancy Pelosi has said.

A 4 year ride at a school like Iowa is worth hundreds of K's $$$. And the student-athlete wants to get paid on top of that as well? Spoiled, entitled bitches, IMO!

So you've worked at the same job/company your entire life? Impressive.

And as others have pointed out, he's been at Iowa 4 years and will graduate this year.

Oh and yes, Jackson "skimming" a quarter of a million dollars (your words) over 4 years from an entity making over $100M a year is incredibly selfish. I mean, what is Iowa going to do when it finds out that 0.06% (even less but I rounded revenue down to $100M) of it's 4 year revenue has been stolen...

100s of thousands? Get real! I love when people use these out of state numbers like the kids don't have any college choice in their home state.

How many other student athletes get a full ride and generate nothing for the school? How many of those athletes probably had their schollys paid for by football and basketball players?

Okay hang on here....I really don't care if they get paid...if they don't... if he goes or if he stays. But what you just said is the definition of an over simplification and why most people don't get business, therefore tax brakes and therefore political BS and therefore what is or isn't...selfish.

Paying "Jackson" isn't the problem, its the 85 other scholarships, then feeding 100 kids, rooming them, traveling them, "healing" them, coaching them, etc, etc, etc...ad nauseam.

I'm not trying to be a jerk but that is the mistake many, if not most make. They look at individual data and say "oh yeah sure, that makes sense...." It doesn't even take into account the humanity stain...

Everyone thinks they deserve more. That's why socialism breaks down. Eventually someone decides they deserve more than their neighbor, brother, sister etc...because they are better, smarter, work harder, etc...

Its a slippery slope.

I'm thinking that communism is where all the players would get paid the same amount but socialism is where all the players would get paid but there would be scaling due to merit.

Who knows what goes on with boosters etc? Seems likely that certain players get benefits one way or another.

Oh I agree, I was purposely making an over simplified point that it's ridiculous to think a player is "skimming" (re: stealing) money from the school because they leave early.

My point was really that the school doesn't think the kids are stealing or not honoring them by leaving early, and the point that was originally made was absurd.
