Iowa
Pretty disappointed in these guys today. Hopefully they learn from this. Still a lot of basketball, it wasn't like they were going to go undefeated anyway, but man that one hurt. Now on to the big ten

With this years team, Iowa is an inside/out team, if Garza doesn't touch the ball most every time down the floor and Iowa shoots from deep first, this is what you get. That stretch in the 1st have when we quick shot the 3 and Suggs made every shot he put up, was the difference today.
If we continue to play this kind of school yard basketball it won't be the only loss Iowa well have this year. Garza ended up with 30 points and Iowa ignored him during the time Gonzaga gained control of the game, learn from your mistakes and make adjustments.
Better be fast because Purdue comes to town on Tuesday and Iowa hasn't had all that much success against them recently...

I thought CMac played his roll just fine and had a few nice post feeds. If Nunge played a little more in his role and had less green light I think we are singing his praises or if some of those shots drop we are singing them as well. Nunge is going to be really good. CJF never found his flow, he picked up a few touch fouls and got cold. Today was not a good matchup for JBo, but it's basketball, soon he will have another hot game.

I think your being a bit over critical of Connor and Nunge. They did decent in their roles today I thought.

I thought Nunge was great other than too many outside shots. Connor didn’t hurt or impact the game.

We lost because they shot 50% from three and we were probably below 20%. Also, we got slaughtered on the boards. So disappointed we couldn’t shoot it better for the game of the year.

Toussaint needs much more playing time when Jordan can’t hit threes and against quicker penetrating guards.

We just weren't hitting 3s, its as simple as that. Most teams will double/triple Garza, if we dont hit 3s we will struggle. Other than TJ & maybe Wezzy, the rest can't create their own shot.

"Toussaint needs much more playing time when Jordan can’t hit threes and against quicker penetrating guards."

Joey T is getting better. He really only had one play where he dribbled into the teeth of the D and turned it over. Jordan looked better before the surgery. His shot looks different, like he's lost strength and has to more throw it than shoot it.

Cold shooting killed us. It wasn't even good Gonzaga defense. Just missed too many open shots. At this point Nunge's gunning is costing possessions. F McC needs Jack to understand he can only shoot if at one of Jack's feet is in the paint. Jack is playing better than I thought he would; rebounding, and providing some defensive play-when he's in or close to the lane, but the mindless gunning is costly.

Nunge was great on offensive boards (6) but only got 2 defensive rebounds and Iowa's problem was not securing enough defensive rebounds. Gonzaga shot well and got too many rebounds when they missed.

Other than letting Suggs go off from 3pt line, the other thing that cost Iowa the game was getting killed on the boards and missing too many 3pt shots.

We should have made a few more FTs and missed opportunity to score 4-5 more points they normally would make, but Gonzaga also missed a lot of FTs, so FT line wasn't the difference.

It’s not as simple as saying make more 3’s. We were 31-53 from inside 3, so that is fantastic. Agree w/Aleksei that the mass substitution with Pat, Keegan I believe and Nunge killed us. That 4 minute stretch we never recovered from. If Patrick is going to continue to be a 7th -8th man he at least has to try on defense. He got destroyed out there in his 10. Absolutely lost on defense.

Not Bohannon's day obviously but not worried at all. He will win some games for Iowa down the road.

Two main reasons for loss IMO.....
1. Jalen Suggs' bombs; and
2. Iowa's poor FT shooting

Suggs hit 7/10 3PT shots, Iowa made 14-26 FTs.

Its an exaggerated oversimplification ....but... if Suggs hits "only" 50% of his 3PT FGAs and Iowa makes at least 70% of its FTs then Iowa wins by 1. You can play "what ifs" all night I guess but going forward Iowa has to do much better than 54% at the FT line.

JBo is not the JBO of old,,,,,he really played poorly today and I love the kid.
Connor took shot and made them early when other guys were struggling,,he played fine and big games don’t bother that kid,, I thought Nunge played pretty good—-
Bottom line we got out hustled on the boards and did a poor job defending the perimeter- all that said if we hit our Free Throws it’s a game

littlez, spot on. The mass substitutions are crazy. The singular characteristic flaw of Fran's coaching. That's why having no bench prevented bringing in 3 or more guys at once last season.

Play your starters as many minutes as they can play and your reserves no more minutes than are absolutely necessary. I'm guessing this game was a little daunting for P McC and Ke Murray, first road game is against No.1.

Everyone needs to remember Gonzaga is number 1 for a reason. They are very good.

He launched way too many 3s, which he missed on all of the shots. Otherwise he played alright. He, like all of the team, need to block out much better.
He was 4 of 10 overall, 8 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Missed 2 three pointers I think. You miss all the 3 pointers you don’t take. 😉 Good game from Nunge, he was not the problem.

JBo really had an "off" game. 1-8 Fgs and 4 To's. Thankfully it won't last.

Jbo has had one good game out of 7 so far. Take out the NC game and he's 21% from the field this year with games of 6,5,0,3,6 and 2 points. We know he's not in there for his defense so that's probably not going to cut it from your starting point guard. Historically he's been a good/great shooter but I'm not sure how long you can use that as a reason to start over JT.

Nunge got two blocks and was contesting shots, which makes it hard to rebound. 6 offensive boards is outstanding.

I thought they should have played more Keegan Murray, he’s a great defender and rebounds well. Although he did get off to a bad start.

Stay tuned. Fran has a decision to make. He might be suited for a backup role at least in the short term until he gets his stroke back. Very impressed with JT's play here as of late though. He deserves a shot at starting PG.

I would agree with this comment. Iowa lost the game IMO because the defense was bad, rebounding bad, and shooting 3's bad. Not to mention the 2 starting guards were a liability pretty much all day.

The reality is JBO has had one good shooting game out of seven. That is not going to warrant the minutes he has been getting considering he is a liability on the defensive end. Touissant and Uhlis need to man the PG position and JBO slide over to the two.

See post #27.

I have been a strong nunge supporter but thought he kinda shot us out of the game early with the misses. Not that I mind him shooting at all because he normally makes most of them. Just a bad shooting game for him.

I hope they come back and throttle Purdue, we owe them several in bb and fb.

Jack did shoot us out in that big early run for the Zags. He certainly doesn’t lack confidence on the offensive end. That being said, he needs to understand situations better and quit jacking up quick 3’s. 2nd half he was solid. Rebounded and hit some shots.

I like Nunge as a player overall (and it sounded like he had a good 2nd half that I fast forwarded thru down double digits all day), but I agree he was a huge part of taking us out in that first half when he kept missing and wouldn't stop shooting. We had the wrong people taking too many of the shots in the first half, open or not. This team had a 4 minute or so scoring drought which I didn't think would happen to this team. Not the end of the world, but they made the 2nd half immaterial, which was dissapointing and surprising.

His misses were ill advised shots that killed momentum. I’m not saying he played a bad game. I just want him to stop shooting long jumpers.

Taking quick 3s is not the problem its the people who were shooting the 3s that was the problem.

Nunge, Connor and JT should not be quick shooting ever. Nunge especially seems to be totally confused on what his abilities are.

CJ, JW and JBO should never pass up an open 3 regardless of what any of the other 9 players on the floor are doing.

How about some rebounding and getting those 50/50 balls. Saw some standing around today. Bad 3 point shooting for us and good for them. Zags didn’t shoot particularly well from the free throw like either.

On a side note, Iowa is 7-39 from three point range in their 2 games there.

I'll sing Nunges praises when he learns how to secure a damn rebound and stops letting players a foot shorter than him take it away.

That was utterly pathetic today the way they let that guard dominant the glass.

They let a 6'5 guard get 18 ****ing rebounds.
