Of course they did. They don't want to deal with politics and the Liberal Justices know the Republicans would try to make their life hell with oversight when they have power and Conservative Justices fear the same with Democrats in power. It doesn't mean that oversight isn't a good idea, it just needs to somehow be a non-partisan oversight process with complete transparency.
