Saw a special on her murder today. This year marks the 20 year anniversary. Dad may not have done it but he was there. Most monsters like this grab and go. Whoever did this took their time and committed the crime onsite. Saw Dad give 2 interviews. The first one was with Patsy. He displayed zero emotion. Mom shed a few tears. The second interview was with his new wife post Patsy's death. Completely different man. Almost as if he is the only person left who knows the truth.

I think leading speculation for a long time was that mom actually did it in a fit of rage, and then everything else was just part of the cover-up.

The things that always struck me as the most odd was that 1) the ransom note appeared to have been composed on-site at the kitchen table. Like someone just broke in, ties the kid up in the basement, and then goes about taking their leisurely time writing the note right there?

and then 2) the oddly specific amount of the ransom, which was exactly the dad's Christmas bonus that year. I mean, come one. I don't remember what it was, but it was something extremely peculiar, like $56,800 or something ridiculous, and these people were worth millions, right?

Clearly an inside job.

I was in Colorado on a skiing trip when she was murdered. The news coverage just exploded after day one and there was rampant speculation on a serial murderer preying on kids. Like a lot of people my view shifted to either the mom or her brother did it, and dad covered it up.

Were you ever a person of interest?

New Netflix documentary makes the case the Boulder Police were borderline incompetent, if not outright incompetent. Ironically, this old investigator who offered help but was dismissed as an elderly fool by them turned out to be right about a lot.
See for example, Jodi Huisentruit, Lyric Cook, Elizabeth Collins, Johnny Gosch et al. Cops sucked hard in all these and more cases.

What the the Boulder Police seemed to suffer from is an inability to admit they were in over their head and needed help from the start. So many shoddy mistakes in the first 48 hours alone. I’ve heard the same thing about the Mason City PD’s lack of competence in other cases.

Seems like a common theme... Too many cold cases across this country.

I feel like you were a suspect in at least a couple of those cases. And here you are inserting yourself into another investigation...

I kind of wondered if her parents were caught up in some illegal activity that cost their daughter's life, and they know the killer.

I like the brother theory more than one of the parents covering for the other. That's a stretch for me that one of that would do that for the other.

But if both were complicit in illegal activities and they wanted to save their "lifestyle", I dont put much past anyone anymore.

I don't remember what the life insurance policy amount was for her

Is there evidence or allegations of these other illegal activities? Honest question.

If she had a life insurance policy that would.change my opinion

There's no concrete evidence but her autopsy report, which is public, do show issues with her genitals and anus, which shouldn't be the case for a healthy kid.

All in all, it's tragic and sad. All kids should grow to be adults.

It has been a long time since I read about it. But, I'll look back and let you know. I remember thinking these people had some shady business dealings. Could be wrong.

If they owed some bad people money, it wouldn't be the first time someone killed or had someone killed for life insurance money.

Shit, that has even happened in Iowa on several cases

My guess is the meth cartel killed the Iowa girls due to Dan Morrisey.

CBS did a really good special on it a few years ago. They hypothesized the brother hit her with the flashlight after she stole his pineapple…then the parents covered it up.
The parents covering it up for their son makes sense to me. But as someone else said earlier, there was trauma to her vagina and anus. Was the brother capable of that? Separate incidents?

Why? I think you bought the BS that the police were selling the media at the time, and what the media was happy to run with.

I know really nothing about the case beyond seeing her on the cover of People magazines in the grocery check out.

Females were 58% of family murder victims. Of all the murders of females in 2002, family members were responsible for 43%.
Children under age 13 were 23% of murder victims killed by a family member, and just over 3% of nonfamily murder victims.
The average age among sons or daughters killed by a parent was 7 years, and 4 out of 5 victims killed by a parent were under age 13.
Females were more likely than males to be victims of family murder. Females were 50.9% of the U.S. population in 2002 but 57.5% of the Nation’s victims of family murder that year. Family members were responsible for 43.1% of all the murders of females in 2002.
Looking at it another way, among all victims of murder who were under age 13, nearly two-thirds were killed by a family member. Among victims age 13 or older, fewer than 1 in 5 were killed by a member of their family.

But her case could be an outlier.

So “good” a special that CBS lost millions to him in a defamation suit due to shoddy reporting.

And a garrote. And taser marks. And non-family DNA on her underwear. Her brother was 9. And a small 9. It just doesn’t check out.

I think this is why the parents are blamed, along with the cringey pageant stuff. And that she was in the basement, I just never bought it.
