Josh Dix

I still think Fran will redshirt him this coming year. Just not enough time to rehabilitate the damaged leg and also get ready for the "difficulties" of playing college basketball. We'll see.

I've only seen a few clips of Josh, so I have no educated opinion.

But he looks and plays like 1/2 the guards Iowa has had over the last 40 years. Which is to say he's probably a good player and will help the Hawks one day, but unlikely to lead them to the promised land.

His shooting numbers are a little concerning.

31.7% from three, and 57.7% from the line.

this year was his worst shooting year, but he also never got to finish the year due to the injury so it wasn't a full season. But despite not shooting well, he can still score. He's good with the ball and can get to mid-range or to the rim and finish... or find and create for others. He also has good hands / feet on defense. He's a well rounded player that will contribute when he's on the court.

He looks bigger/more physical and more athletic than most of the guards Iowa has had that over that time period.

Somewhere in between Weiskamp, Gatens and Tony Perkins.

Josh checks all the boxes. He's a perfect fit for Fran's system.

* Great handle
* Has the step back 3
* Hits the 3 coming off screens
* Has a quick release
* Great shooting range
* Has ability to drive/get to the bucket and finish
* Has the pull up mid range jumper
* Has great hops
* Has great overall athleticism

I am going to guess he was a high volume shooter. Looking at the videos, he takes a lot of tough shots and is not on balance and floats quite a bit. When he is on balance, he shoots it fairly well.

I did. Looks like a very good player. Happy to have him in the program.

He just doesn't look like a powerful guard that is going to go through guys to the hoop or shut down opponents in the B1G.

Hope I'm underestimating him.
Fair enough. I'm not sure I'd go that far either. I have no idea what his D is like.

But from an athleticism standpoint I'd say he's an upgrade from the average Iowa guard recruit.

I saw a clip some time back of him driving the lane and throwing down a powerful dunk in traffic…..my biggest concern is that he recovers fully (both physically and mentally) from the broken leg….my wild guess is that he redshirts his first year, but you never know.

Dunkss....those aren't the ones I was thinking of.

Gatens might be a pretty good comp from what I have seen. Seems like a multi-skilled pretty athletic guard with really good size, who plays both ends, which sounds good to me. I like the tapes of Bowen and Dix, and think Fran got some good ones. Add a quality big from the portal, and we will be a top half of the B1G team next year.

High school 3 point percentages don't mean anything, top players in Iowa force a lot of bad shots as they are often the only thing the defense is focused on. The free throws I agree are slightly concerning.

Yeah I would say the goal his first year is to be healthy, do well in school, anything beyond that is extra. Surgeons and medical care and the like are amazing today. But he had a very serious injury. There is a difference between being medically cleared to play and being back to what he was before the injury and even getting better than that. Assuming that bone heals right, I have no doubt he'll get there. But I'm not expecting it to be this year. If if is, great.

Looks like an interesting prospect. Good size, strength and enough athleticism to want to see more. I hope folks don't make snap judgement on him this fall coming back from a surgery. Who am I kidding, that's what a message board is all about, snap judgements.

Perfectly said….my sentiments exactly.

I think people get sidetracked by physical appearance.
