Josh Dix

Based on those highlights, Josh Dix reminds me of Adam Haluska. He’s deceptively quick and has an aggressive drive to the hoop. He doesn’t seem quite the athlete Adam was, but the style is very similar and I imagine Josh has a chance to be pretty good depending how hard he works.
I like the Haluska comparison. Adam was at lease a couple of inches taller and was an out of this world athlete. Dix looks more like Gatens to me with better handles.

I posted this a few months back and got hammered for even suggesting such a thing.

I think he'll do well at Iowa, especially in McC's offense and defense. He has a deceptively quick first step, a very good jump shot, and can play defense.

They have Dix listed at 6’5. I think that’s what Haluska was listed at, which is my height, and Adam isn’t 6’5. He’s at least half an inch shorter than me if not a little more. I’ve never stood next to Dix, but I’m guessing he’s likely similar in height to Adam.

We’ll see how well Dix comes back from the injury. Adam was also stronger and more athletic, so Josh has a lot of work in front of him if he wants to be half as good as Adam was by the time he ended his Iowa career.

Look, I hate player comparisons. Stylistically, there are similarities to his game and Adam’s, but that’s it. How Dix progresses from high school to college is anyone’s guess. Right now, he doesn’t get good elevation on his jumpshot (based off the highlights I saw), and that will have to improve in the B1G Ten. Like I said, he is deceptively quick, which allowed him to get a lot of shots off against weak competition, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to success at the next level without tremendous improvement.

I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer, as the talent and potential are there—raw as they may be. However, Josh is rated a 3 star for a reason. Obviously, high school rankings aren’t the end-all, be-all for player potential and development, but the greater point is Josh will have to improve a lot and put in a tremendous amount of hard work if he has any hope of patterning his Iowa career even remotely close to Adam Haluska’s. I say that not against Josh Dix, as he can do whatever he wishes with the talent he’s been given. I say that for a lot of our idiot fans who don’t understand what it takes to be as successful at the P5 level as say Adam Haluska, or Luka Garza, or Keegan Murray were, and by hearing these player comparisons will bad mouth Dix if his Iowa career doesn’t match the aforementioned standouts. It is perfectly okay if Josh Dix has an Iowa career patterned after Josh Dix, and Iowa fans need to accept that, as that is what’s most likely to happen.

Bobby Hanson who played 9 years in the NBA? 6-6 shooting guard who was a helluva defender as well had a game that wouldn’t translate today? Uh, sure.
The game has changed. Was Bobby Hanson more talented than say 6’9 Jarrod Uthoff? How about 6’6 Peter Jok?

Well no shit the game has changed. However, to compare Bob Cousy who played in the 50's and 60's and could only dribble w/his right hand is ridiculous. Jok was a tremendous shooter. Tremendous. Not much else. Not super quick, not a good defensive player at all. The knee I'm guessing probably ruined any chance at a pro career. Uthoff was talented. Again, not a great athlete. Not explosive, limited athletically. Hanson was a guy who could play all 5 positions in high school, he was a tremendous athlete, and he was very very versatile, which is why he stuck in the league for 9 years. And he was a very very good defender and a great teammate. So yes, I believe his game would translate to today.

Can he play anything like Christian Braun from Kanas? That would be wonderful.
Agree. That would be a great comp. Pretty sure Braun was only a 3 star guy most of his high school career. I think once he got the KU offer it bumped him to a 4 star. I'd take that in a heartbeat obviously.

I was super impressed with him in the Final Four. So strong in his upper body. Defended like crazy. Apparently, he took a huge leap after his freshman year.

I believe KU has a female strength trainer for basketball. From what I have seen from her she's very impressive. KU guys have all gotten much bigger and stronger from previous seasons.

Comparing Bobby Hansen to today's wings is just as ridiculous. They would eat him alive.

How about not assuming greats of the past wouldn't be different if they evolved their game now? Some players just have the right focus, work ethic, and physical ability to stand out. A few posters here want to assume someone like Hansen couldn't excel if they played today. I disagree.

Hanson was a 2 guard. And believe it or not he was considered athletic in his day at 6-6. Like anything else the game gets faster, of course. But as seer said just said, give those guys the modern training and see what happens. He guarded Jordan back in the day. Michael wasn’t a bad athlete. 😏

Hansen also battled foot related stress fractures at Iowa. If Dix is anything like Bobby I'll be happy.

Bobby's attitude and fire were great, and are universally wonderful.

His game would not translate to 2022.
Bobby Hansen was "athletic enough", as a freshman I believe, to be assigned to guard Dr. Dunkenstein when he was lighting everyone else up in the Final Four game. His game and athleticism were more than adequate for today's game.

...or that we needed rebounds too
What? Pete Jok was probably the best rebounding guard we've ever had. He averaged 5.5 a game is senior year:

Edit: Jeff Horner was probably the best, but he played more minutes, too:

Saying that a player reminds me of another player doesn't mean that I believe their game will have the same impact. Maybe Bobbie Hansen's game wouldn't play well in the NBA today, but I believe it would still do very well in college BB. He didn't rely on quickness, as much a being incredible tough and understanding the game. He was a positional defender and was long enough that he could guard quicker guards pretty effectively. He had a broad skill set, unlike many of the players today.

I'd consider Joe W a guard and he averaged about 6 for his career and 7 as a senior.

While this is not directed specifically at you, far too many people who never watched, or were old enough to understand the game at the time, are basing their comments and opinions on Bobby Hansen based on assumptions.

What does it matter?

Dix looks like a legit 6'4 - 6'5" player. He could dunk with ease in the videos avaliable, can rebound, and can defend guards, eventaller ones. He can shoot based on his HS stats and all reports. That inch won't make much difference either way.
Umm I think you missed the joke 😉

I have to admit, if that number is true, I didn't realize it and it surprises me. He played more than his senior year. What were his rebounding numbers in the other years?
