Junior Duals - Freestyle

Aren't you just the eternal optimist. There have been plenty of guys that have lost a freestyle match at the HS level who ended up at the top of the podium. Why don't we give the kid a chance to get in the room before he is declared a bust?

Freeman is top notch. He'll be a big time recruit next year for whoever gets him. Happel was in position to win the match. Say what you want about Happel but he can get to the legs. Brands can work with a guy like that. He's not a Clark/Gillman type of recruit but he's definitely at a higher level than either Ryan. Let's wait until the end of tomorrow before you castrate him....minus if he hits McKee

Looks like there isn't a match at 100. Isley with :19 fall to make it 35-29 Iowa over California.

Wow! That Iowa v Cali dual was pretty exciting! It's unfortunate Mejia didn't make the trip and neither did Campbell or Gillem's gas tank. I would have liked to have seen an in shape Gillem matchup with Rathbun. Instead, Rathbun got a guy Ramirezlazos who was 2-2 at the Cali state tourney (at 120 btw). Wagner v. Mejia would have been fun to see. Huge win by Lyon. Thomas is a stud and Lyon kept on coming and broke Thomas. Conditioning was certainly a factor for more than a couple of California's kids this tourney.

This Iowa team is good. One of the better teams we've had in awhile. I think they can take top 4. Too bad they didn't have fought and Thompsen.

Lyon is certainly making a statement this weekend. He looks small too. Lyon 84 Warner 97?

Malcolm had Wick broke. That would have been a huge win.

Don't know if Happel is going to be a stud in college or not, but for the wait til he's in the room crowd, he's been in the room for a while as part of the EIWC. So he's been getting good coaching, but maybe having better partners will further is development.

Happen=overrated. Guy that beat him (Freeman) was ranked 14th last year at 132 and is a year younger than Carter. Oh and Freeman just got stuck in the first period by some kid from Minnesota. Happen is going to struggle mightily in D1. Bring on the denial.
What purpose does this serve? I don't understand why an Iowa fan would run down one of our own recruits. At least give him a couple of years in the room before trashing him.

Everybody is good at this level. With Happels recent results against solid (not elite) guys being what they are it doesn't appear that he's ever going to be an elite D1 guy. He appears to have potential similar to a Logan Ryan. Not that they're terrible, obviously talented wrestlers. I just don't see the offensive output needed to compete at the highest level. Happel was touted as the "big gun" on Iowa's dual team. Underwhelming. Not looking like he could be a D1 AA in a couple years. Would love to be wrong.

Folks were saying the same thing after Night of Conflict. I disagree. I think the worst you can say about Happel is that he is inconsistent. Capable of some very good outcomes but lets some slip away. I think at this point, given who we have going for us at the Olympics, do we really know for sure who is going to be elite or not?

Yes, Rasheed bc 21 guns says so.

Edit. And pat Downey bc his dad said so.

He's got the height...dude looks like a stork out there or maybe the guys he wrestled were short. He's going to be a big boy IMO. It was cool to see him wrestle...hadn't seen much of him but at least I'll be able to add to his first stellar video.

Looks like Iowa Red will face off with Oklahoma's A team and then Illinois tomorrow after dropping one to New Jersey to end today. I don't like Iowa's chances in either of those duals as a team, but there are some individual matchups I'm looking forward to. Does anyone have any in particular they want to see from those 2 duals?

Matt Malcolm had been impressive the whole weekend.

Jack Wagner giving the "I broke him" signal for Jet Taylor. He got deducted a point...anybody know what happened?

I am really impressed with Max Lyon. That match with Embree was impressive. Embree is a horse and Lyon wasnt scared to go after him. That Firemans carry was slick as hell.

Brandon's replacement?

Eh he might be too big but not out of the question. 52 is a pull for him. He's still developing. He really didn't go full boar until last year. His Improvement over the last year is impressive.

49 after Brandon?
Kem goes back down to 49 after sor graduates and Matt slides in?
He's a 65?
He starts one year after Kem graduates?

Either way, our depth at those weights is going to be impressive with Luke Troy up there as well.

Coleman got was on his way to a tech, didn't have his gut cinched properly and got pinned....Damnit...up 12-4 and needed one more

And if he has a good Fargo in a few weeks the tone will be different. Maybe SoCal could share his thoughts on Sorenson when he was coming out of high school. Him and Happel have similar high school and Freco credentials. If Happel has the same results Sorenson has had in his first 3 years in the Iowa room I would be alright with that. Only time will tell, but to judge a guy over a few losses before he steps foot in the room is dumb.

Just to chime in, a kid dropping a match (or another getting pinned) at Cadet or Jr. Duals doesn't necessarily tell you where a kid is at. Most kids will drop a match or two to someone perceived as a lesser wrestler, or, at the very least have a match where they are very flat and perhaps barely beat a lesser kid etc. This is due to the physical, and especially, the mental grind/drain that can occur during these dual meet tourneys. It is tougher in some respects than Fargo. In Fargo, a wrestler can mentally escape the action and allow their brain to relax in between matches. At the duals, you don't have that luxury because you are on the bench hyper focused on your teammates matches as well. If a kid goes undefeated, or loses one close match during the week to a super stud, then you can say that kid is tough as nails. However, a loss or lackluster performance here and there at these tournaments may not always be a reflection on the kid's skill/development, or readiness for the next level.

I just watched the match and Happel would have had a lot more points with Folkstyle. There was nothing in that match to make me think a kid would be a bust. Even if there was it doesn't server any purpose to put it on here.

Nice finish for Iowa. Jack Wagner had a heck of a tournament.

Rough ending for Lyon going 1-3 in the gold pool. Still a good tourney for him showing he can compete with the best.

Carter is going to be just fine. Has some mental lapses and can get overaggressive and out of position at times but the former can be worked on and the latter be modified.

For being such a big recruit and huge miss for Iowa he sure does lose a lot.

Who said that? Who said he's not going to Iowa? He loses a lot? Compared to the other Iowa recruits? Yeah, not really. How did he do this weekend? Do you follow wrestling or just post dumb shit?
