Junior Duals - Freestyle

Have to watch the Wagner-Jet Taylor match...the good old boy in the background talking smack. Jet raked Wagner's face and Jack elbowed him coming up. Ref called Wagner for it and Good ole Boy, who earlier wanted the ref to give points for an escape starts complaining that Wagner needed to be booted. I guess this is what got Wagner heated and started taking it to Jet

Aw, shucks.….. Another beautiful moment brought to us by Ambien.

Possibly two weeks ago, but not now. What was so beautiful you strange bastard? You're one of few posters here that make me cringe when I see your post...you're embarrassing. Go back and look at the stuff you post. You are a special man.

Wagner looked game. Wish he wrestled 6 minutes pissed off.

Glad Rathbun is back from surgery. He also had a pretty good weekend. Was able to get to legs easily.

Happel is really good and with a full redshirt year will be even better. Gets to legs, but gets out of position sometimes TNT will fix that.

Nelson is tough and keeps getting better. Probably a good chance he's a hawk.

Malcolm looks better every time he wrestles. He will be a great training partner for the 49-65 pounders. Has a good chance of making the lineup towards the end of his career.

Coleman looked real good. Had a lot of mistakes that can easily be fixed. Not sure if he has interest in Iowa, but would be a great addition.

Lyon looked great. I Haven't seen much of him but has looked great the last month. He looks game against the best. We really need to add some 84/97 pounders.

Hopefully having M*coaching this weekend will give us an edge of these guys.

Coleman is very raw and he got caught being sloppy today. He just started wrestling like five years ago. If he started wrestling like most of these kids at four or five he would be unstoppable. He's also a quiet and super nice guy. I think he should find his evil side and start using that strength of his to get aggressive and rip heads off.

He doesn't have a weight at Iowa, so I hope he goes to UNI so we can watch him at every home dual. I wrestled with his dad and they were our neighbors in Waterloo before moving to Ames. I'm a fan.

Thanks, yes I did. Fighting an infection now.

It sucks I can't play catch with my four elite baseball players right now or work on freestyle with them. They'll have some catching up to do.

Hope you feel better. The phenoms need you at full strength

This guy might end up surprising some folks. It was only a quick snapshot but I have to say, he impressed me the most.

As for Coleman, the raw talent is there. Going to be very good someday. Just hope he doesn't end up at ISU

Just in in case I die tonight from infection getting to my cold, very cold heart, I want El to know I wasn't serious. I can't think of one thing he posted, much less what it was about. I was just PROJECTING for fun, you could have been anyone. I'm sure you're a valuable poster, but my mind is gone. I only remember AZ's posts.

Projection is a form of defense in which unwanted feelings are displaced onto another person, where they then appear as a threat from the external world. A common form of projection occurs when an individual, threatened by his own angry feelings, accuses another of harbouring hostile thoughts. personality: Freud.

I hope doesn't stay home too, but we have a serious answer for him at Iowa...while he's young anyways.

Uni is perfect for him. He's been courted by Nebraska pretty hard too, and everyone else. If he can get mean, he'll be really good. If not he'll keep the Easy Ed style like he has now, but how good he can be with that? He needs brands and Lee to kick his style into attack and break you down mode. He needs serious training in freestyle and he's still one of the best in the country at his age. He's easy, but he's not Ed...yet.

For the record, I think Coleman is a fine prospect. I just through Sans' comments a few months ago were a little over the top and I enjoy increasing his post count whenever I can. An active Souci makes for a more interesting board.

Happen=overrated. Guy that beat him (Freeman) was ranked 14th last year at 132 and is a year younger than Carter. Oh and Freeman just got stuck in the first period by some kid from Minnesota. Happen is going to struggle mightily in D1. Bring on the denial.
This was an extremely weak effort from an otherwise very solid poster. Way premature and over the top, IMO.

With his 2 AM posts, he might not be active for a while today.

I know it's just one post season tournament, but Happel suffered a loss by decision to Freeman of Mich (ranked #14 at 138 by FLO) and got pinned in 22 sec by Wyatt Long of PA, a jr who is unranked and has never placed at state. FLO has Happel ranked #8 in 145#.

While Happel has had a great HS career, and would be a nice addition in the Iowa wrestling room, I'm not convinced he'll be a collegiate star. No, I'm not trashing the kid or writing him off, and I'd love to be proven wrong in a couple of years, but just giving my 2 cents.

Sammy Sasso was ranked 7th, gets beat by Oster, who in turn gets pinned by Malcolm in :30 seconds. BTW, Sasso also beat Mitch McKee. Mantanona gets beat by Embree...who in turn gets beat by Lyon. A few guys got through unscathed but junior duals is tough.

when someone of quality gets pinned in 22 seconds sometimes it has little to do with skill level, but what do I know I just woke up.

Everybody is good at this level. With Happels recent results against solid (not elite) guys being what they are it doesn't appear that he's ever going to be an elite D1 guy. He appears to have potential similar to a Logan Ryan. Not that they're terrible, obviously talented wrestlers. I just don't see the offensive output needed to compete at the highest level. Happel was touted as the "big gun" on Iowa's dual team. Underwhelming. Not looking like he could be a D1 AA in a couple years. Would love to be wrong.
I don't know how good Happel will be at Iowa either, but I do know when I watch a Freestyle or Greco match I know it has no bearing on what will happen to a Folkstyle wrestler in College. Iowa or anywhere.

Very good points Chief. I made it a point to watch the film on FloPro of any results that I found surprising. A lot of the quick falls are results that are VERY unlikely in rematches. I also do not think many of these matches are useful in predicting how any of these kids will do wrestling Folkstyle on the collegiate level. I'm excited about the group of guys from this years junior duals who will be walking into the Iowa room this summer or fall, and especially curious to see how Happel and Malcom progress.

I mentioned this in an earlier post. Happel and Sorenson have similar credentials up to this point. Are they the same probably not, but only time will tell. One difference between them is Happel made the cadet world team a couple years ago. I'm not sure what he and Sorenson Fargo finishes are, but I know Sorenson was 2nd in Cadets one year to Jake Short who he never beat in High School and has never lost to in college.

Brandon did also lost to Short in Junior freestyle, but the point still remains he hasn't lost to him in folkstyle.

A close loss to Ben Freeman is in NO WAY a negative. He is a soon to be senior who has verballed to UofM and is a 3X State Champ with a 129-1 record(only loss as a freshman). He has been an AA nearly a dozen times between Cadet/Junior Greco and Freestyle as well as FloNationals. Just like Happel he has wrestled in nearly every high profile national tournament. You are going to take some losses, but there are some great wins as well!

Jelani Embree is a Manchild. He blew his knee out prior to his freshman season and was unable to wrestle. He has finished 3rd and 1st since with a record of 92-1. His lone loss came as a sophomore losing to a senior, and undefeated, Logan Massa 14-9(Massa's only relatively close match that year.) He hasn't wrestled as many events as Freeman, but he has had great National success. He is also a soon to be senior and has verballed to Michigan.

Happel losing 3-2 is not a measuring stick for some perceived poor performance and the Lyon win over Embree is HUGE!!

He has actually lost to him in Folkstyle, just not in college.
Sorry, I should have clarified while at Iowa. Admittedly, I didn't know their results in folk while in HS......if that wasn't clear already:)
